My DVD player died and I was thinking of picking up a HD DVD player for my 360 to replace it. Has anyone seen any good deals?

Thanks!

Next week at Circuit City they are giving any 2 HD DVD's with the purchase of the 360 HD DVD Drive. Tack on the $40 off coupon and all this can be yours for the low price of $159. YMMV on the coupon working. I got it to work on a couple of occasions with no problems.

Thanks for the help, I might have to try that out. Unfortunately my HDTV is older and doesn't have a VGA or HDMI input and I have heard that you wont see a huge improvement in standard DVD playback quality if you are using component cables. Guess I will have to think it over!

Whoever told you that is dead wrong.

As far as I know the 360 won't upscale DVDs unless you are using the VGA cable, even if your using the HD DVD drive. I've tried regular DVDs and my TV says its getting a 480p signal.

I'm using a 52" Toshiba that only has component inputs. Anyone here using one w/ component cables - can you see a difference?

I'd like to know about that too, those that are in the same boat. I have a 60" Mits but it was before HDMI. Its component 1080i only. It gives me a great picture and Ive been thinking about getting the 360 drive if the HD movies look good off of it (plus the upscaling if that works)

I have a 48" with 1080i component and DVI inputs. I connect via the component. when I watch a regular dvd through my 360 HD drive and hit the "info" button on my tv remote it says "480p." So from my experience I would say it makes nopt difference with regular DVDs. I have not tried it with vga, mainly because of cost, at least $50 for both the 360 vga cable and vga-dvi adapter.

I would also say that I'm not blown away by HD DVD. A regualr DVD that utilizes a high bit rate and good color, look pretty damn good on my tv.

I have not done a side by side comparison of the same movie with dvd and hd to give myself a more accurate example of the difference.

I would say with a tv 48" or smaller HD DVD is worth waiting on. But I would assume that the larger your tv, the more you would notice the difference.

I have the 360 and HD DVD drive hooked up via component cables to a 42" plasma. There is no benefit to watching standard dvd's on the HD DVD drive unless you have the VGA connection. When watching HD DVD's, I notice a huge difference in picture quality. I am sitting very close to the screen though. I would say the for $150 with 2 free HD DVD's, it is well worth it for the HD DVD drive. If nothing else, it plays your standard DVD's as well as any other non-upconverting dvd player.
