You know this guy was talking out of his ass when he said:

'Oh, yeah when I was 12, this was really fun,' and you have these great nostalgic reasons to play them. Then you do play them, and they're just not very fun anymore. But, there are some games like Joust or Gauntlet or Pac-Man that are as fun today as they were back then.

"A lot of those Nintendo games, you know, aren't gonna hold up."

Look at Geometry Wars; it's our Halo. That's not a 10-year-old retro title that you're running on some sort of emulator. That's a new title that was designed specifically for Xbox 360.

I've yet to play G Wars, but I'm sure you'll find freeware shooters that are much better on pc, or at least have some soul to them. I'll be able to have more fun in a well developed "retro" title then anything in Live's Arcade.

He's not totally wrong. But saying old Nintendo games aren't going to hold up is like saying the Sistine Chapel isn't a work of art. If it's not, then what is?

He's exactly right. Now if you will excuse me I have to go back to playing my new-fangled PSP. My favorite games include anything that can be played with the NES and SNES emulators...

I don't really have any problem with what he's saying in general (which is surprising since he's a Microsoft exec), but... Joust has more lasting appeal than Super Mario Bros?

That guy is an absolute dumbass. O yea, those nintendo era games wont hold up. WAY TO PROMOTE a 16 bit era game coming to Xbox Live THEN, you goddam DUMBASSES. Gauntlet, Street Fighter, all that stuff was on Nintendo consoles. This guy has to be a dumbass if he thinks those mass consumer types of XBL Arcade games werent stuff we would enjoy back in the day. They are the SAME THING. MS execs usually respect Nintendo enough to say that they are going after a different market and that they have respect for their ideas. But this clown should never be allowed to speak again.

I have to admit this after playing the following; the Zelda Collector's bundle disc, Metroid on the Game Boy (Sequel to the original NES version.), Final Fantasy Origins, Bionic Commando and some others.... he's right. They don't hold up.

NES games were a huge jump in graphics from the early 80's arcade games and many games did try to sell themselves accordingly. As such they haven't held up as well as you 15-20 year memories. I can't even look at Arc the Lad games, Star Ocean and Brave Fencer Musashi anymore without wondering what was I thinking that these games were so great?

Name one 2d 8bit (or should I say any in home video gaming) platformer that offers the action, the fun, powers, and the thrill of exploration that Super Mario Brothers 3 has? Besides Tails cannot fly like how Mario flies.

I spent one hundred and sixty dollars so I can play 8 bit FAMICOM GAMES on an A/V FAMICOM.

The only thing that doesn't measure up in SMB3 is my TV being too advanced for the game since there is a blue bar on the side of the screen due to the v-sync of the composite cables.

Besides, The Legend of Zelda is more thrilling and better looking than Gauntlet any old day.

well im about to repeat what most of you have already said.

what a complete dumbass.

i think he's forgetting about n64 games.

oh yeah and snes, some of which have been ported to GBA and sell like crazy.

now he is right. sometimes i'll play an old NES game that ruled but realize it aint all that anymore. BUT for every 1 game i dont enjoy anymore there are like 50 more NES games i do enjoy.

gauntlet being better than mario bros? mario bros 2? 3? world? 64? better than zelda?

wtf is this guy thinking!

attn xbox live arcade guy who has no clue what he is talking about and probably started playing video games yesterday: plz stp. k thnx.
What a joke. I love when anyone from Microsoft talks out of there ass and thinks people will listen..
Just like Sony.

hahahahaha. why is nintendo always so calm and collective? they give you honest facts about release dates and upcoming consoles rather than saying their consoles can do 10000000 things but you'll have to wait two years and spend 100+ dollars more.

oh yeah because nintendo is smart.

fyi im not a fanboy. i just support nintendo's business strategies over MS and sony.

What I've noticed:

- Sony lies. Sony knowingly lets fans spread false rumors around -- free press.

- Microsoft is honest... but exaggerates. I feel like they're out there for us, though.

- Nintendo is - by far - out there for us. They don't lie; they tell it straight.

You're taking this out of context... His point is that having only classic games available for download isn't enough, its good, but you can do so much more on top of that, like Live Arcade does. You've got your classic games, but on top of that, you've got brand new games of all kinds. His point is that Live Arcade is a lot broader than what Nintendo is doing, just making their back catalog available, and that they're missing an opportunity.

If you like 2d shooters, you should try Geometry Wars... Its great. Its not your average shooter, not by a longshot. It's sold 50,000+ copies, and had over 200,000 trial downloads. Thats an amazing success.

I like how he makes the point the Nintendo stuff is pretty weak overall, yet Pac-Man and Joust hold up? I can understand what he's saying somewhat, that older games tend not to live up to their hype (old game hype = nostalgia). However, if you're going to say that about Super Mario Bros. then you have to apply it to Pac-Man. And, while Nintnedo is rereleasing their old stuff on the Virtual Console, there's been zero confirmation that that's ALL their doing. So much of the Revolution is shrouded in darkness at this point. Who's to say there won't be NEW NES/SNES/N64 games out there? Fan contests to design a Mario 3 level that will be collected into an expansion-pack type game? A totally new Zelda game based on the Link to the Past engine? Heck, developer manpower would have to be so small to make something like that, *I* might be able to develop games for the Revolution given the seal of quality from big N. Ok... let's return home from speculation world.

I think this is more telling about Microsoft than anything else. They're worred. They're worried that the PS3 might come and kick it's butt in terms of the uber-expensive HD games. They're worried that Nintendo might come in and whoop them at their own Xbox Live! Arcade game (you REALLY think Capcom, Namco, etc. signed EXCLUSIVE deals with Microsoft? I highly doubt that.). They're trying to mobilize the hype machine that Xbox Live Arcade is greater than anything Nintendo's ever put out. That's just arrogance pure and simple. And arrogance that has backfired no less.

Oh, and maybe he forgot that most people aren't going to buy a Revolution solely for the download service. Likewise, Geometry Wars isn't worth shelling out $400+. I really respect companies that can just be confident in their products without bashing everyone else. Guess that won't be the case this generation either.

Good grief - why do we raise arms at a statement that is clearly meant to be propaganda?

No matter how you look at it - this is WAR. No side is ever going to applaud the other side for what they are doing. How counter productive and confusing to a system's base if one of their key leaders said, "What the competition is doing is going to be great. Maybe even rival ours."

So chillax everyone. Sony and M$ both talk the talk, but Nintendo is determined to stealthily walk the walk.

So mario bros and zelda can't compete with geometry wars? You fly around shooting shapes, it's like asteroids but prettied up so they can say "LOOK! IT'S A NEW GAME! LOOK AT THE IRRELEVANT BACKGROUND PRETTINESS! THERE ARE FIREWORKS EFFECTS OMG OMG OMG" Big fucking deal. Can't say it's unexpected or anything, but christ, if you're gonna talk about how you're making new games then make something new already. Taking the same old shit and prettying it up doesn't make it new (but that's what they do with the actual 360 games anyway...).

Exactly, you can't just take that one quote. It makes sense what he is saying and I agree with him. Some of the Nintendo games hold up to the test of time well, some not so well. The combination of new and old games on Live Arcade is a nicer mix for me as I have already played all the old Nintendo games to my fill. It'll be great for those who haven't played them before, but I already own all the classic Nintendo stuff.

I like what Live Arcade is doing with the old games in that they are actually incorporating online multiplayer and scoreboards and the like.

You make it sound like Nintendo won't do that. But, of course, if they do, it'll be "OMG teh STOLEN ideazorZ!!!!11" from the MS camp anyway. Whatever.

They haven't announced that they will, either... All this guy is saying is that *some* don't hold up too well, and that Live Arcade is much broader than just making a back catalog available. Its less of ripping on anyone and more of just tooting his own horn.

I would imagine that incorporating multiplayer and leaderboards into their entire back catalog would take some effort, especially for a free service.

who cares what he says...people are going to eat those games up like they're going out of style...er...

anyway, he's only thinking from his perspective-- little kids will get to experience the 8-bit gen all over again and parents will buy it up since those games are clean and not complicated. Nintendo will probably have an even better profit margin once the rev gets into full swing like the DS has.
