Xbox outsells Gamecube in Japan!

The reason is because xboxs break down so often, and xbox owners just go buy replacements because MS's fee to fix a deffective xbox is 2/3 the price of a new xbox.

That explains the high PS2 sales...

Not surprising as it may seem at first glance. GameCube pretty quickly got all the Japanese purchasers for its Nintendo franchises and from then on the hardware sales have been quick slow. There was no question though that it had a real audience. Unfortunately for hardware sales and the perception of the installed base, you have a lot of gamers in that market who will buy a system for the purpose of playing one major title and sell the whole setup when they're done. This is murder on third party software sales.

Xbox started slow as molasses and has hard a hard climb ever since, getting the occasional spike when something like Ninja Gaiden shipped. It appears the typical Japanese Xbox buyer is more affluent and less likely to sell it off after a single hit game is played out. This gives third party publishers, especially of US and Euro developed games, a better chance to build an audience. The demography of that country's gamers is shifting with age and many previously shunned genres are getting more attention. Those genres have a better range of chioices on Xbox.

[quote name='Ikohn4ever']ehh Gamecube beat or at least almost beat PS2 a couple of times, so to me this news means nothing[/quote]

Those were in relation to the release of major Nintendo franchises that overran the amount of used GameCubes then on the market, while at the same time the PS2 had no major releases that weekand had a much more saturated market.

Okay, the reason Xbox outsold Gamecube during that week was because Dead or Alive Ultimate was released. If you remember, DOA3 is the number 1 selling Xbox game in Japan, because there are a lot of Dead or Alive fans. When DOA XVB came out, Xbox sold around 10,000 consoles and the crowds waiting to buy they game were huge. But after around 2 weeks, the GC will outsell Xbox again.

As for Xbox breaking, yeah they do, even more so than PS2 in my case. But Sony selling around 17 million total PS2's compared to around 500,000 Xbox has nothing to do with breaking down, it has to do with around 90% of the released games in Japan coming to PS2, and most every popular Japanese RPG game is on PS2. Pretty much in Japan, if you like videogames, you must own a PS2.

But the truth is, the 3DO flopped in Japan and Xbox still hasn't even sold as many systems as the 3DO in Japan, which sold 700,000.

First of all, who cares about that? Second of all, the only reason it sold more than Cube for one week was release of DOAU. If you look at previous weeks Xbox sells like 400 per week compared to 6,000 for Cube on average (with PS2 and GBA SP doing a lot more).

Definitely the DOA Ultimate effect: 59,549 copies of that games were sold that week.

For some perspective, look at the total units sold year to date:

Code:
PlayStation 2 1,959,422
Xbox 31,766
GameCube 511,633
GameBoy Advance SP 2,081,561
GameBoy Advance 188,653

This means the Xbox had nearly 7% of its sales this year over one week.

The interesting thing is that the GBA (including GBA SP) is the most popular console this year in Japan...

Here's my take on the story:
RF has finals this week. RF doesn't give three shits about finals. RF pops in Fable as an alternative to studying about the Reformation. Xbox craps out after 30 minutes of play time. RF gets pissed and unhooks Xbox to play some cube. RF accidentally knocks cube out of open dorm-room window and watches as it plummets two floors and hits the ground. RF rushes out side and wipes the dirt off, grateful it wasn't stolen in the time it took him to get outside. RF hooks it back up to his tv. Gamecube plays without error for 2 and a half hours before it is finally shut of by the user. RF flips off Xbox.
RF smiles as he understands market fluctuations; secure in the knowledge that the cube will rise again.

That is an intense drop. 2 stories. The cube must be a freaking tank.

No lie, hapened yesterday. 2 stories of Newtonian physics. If there's one thing I can't fault Nintendo for, it's their durability. The moral of the story is:

Don't sit your system on your tv when your tv sits in front of your window. It's asking for trouble.

well that is good news for xbox, i have all 3 systems, and the cube gets the least of my attention, mostly due to the controller, I haven't liked a nintendo made controller, since the snes

Why do these thrads allways turn into flame wars? I am glad Xbox is selling more in JP and I hope this trend will continue.. I am a fan of all 3 systems. I like to see the 2 underdogs get more sales.

Your windows don't have screens? But anyways great story. You really should send that in to a gaming magazine and share it with the world.

The screen is in my closet which, thanks to the....generous dimensions of our dorm rooms has an area of about 1 1/2 feet as a path to(I can barely get my clothes out of it withoud sending my microfridge face-down). Too much effort, so I just open the window. Yeah, it's dumb, but it just never crossed my mind that it'd slide off my tv and go crashing to the Earth below. There are a few mior dings on it now, but it's fine otherwise. I should send the story to a nintendo PR rep, and maybe get some free stuff for it

The Xbox is not selling more than Gamecube. It sold more units in a week time period, and Xbox fanbois trumpet a weeks sale tally to proclaim victory in an ego driven loyalty bragging war. It's a hollow victory, though, when one looks at total units sold.

It turns into flame wars becuase fanbois never look at the big picture. Frankly, I couldn't care less.

The GC just needs chainsaw arms. MAn....that would be way hot!

One arm could be a chainsaw but the other one would have to be a shotgun with unlimited ammo. But then again if the GC had weapons for arms I'm sure it would have killed you for dropping it out of a window.

Wow great story. It sounded like some experiment in a Physics class. If we drop a GCn out of a window with g equaling the acceleration of it and gravity and its impact, will it live?
