Okay Ive read a lot of posts about this, and even some other websites, but still confused of what I should do. This is kind of long so bare with me please. I never ever had any problems with my xbox which was manufactured and purchased in 2002. A couple of weeks ago, I had MVP 2005 on and paused, when I came back into the room, it had the damaged/dirty disk message. I restarted and then got the Unrecognized disk error. I turned it off, and after a couple of hours restarted and put a lens cleaner in and everything worked fine. In fact, it worked fine for a few days. The other day I was playing Madden 2005 and boom got the dang damged/dirty disk message again. Restarted and seemed to work okay but in the middle of the game again got the damaged/dirty disk error. I bought a new lens cleaner and put it in and ran it. I proceeded to run it again but it would not play, it would just skip through the different tracks. I turned off the xbox, restarted, and got the unrecognized disk error again.
I have a phillips drive. Ive called Microsoft, and they want to charge $80 plus $10 shipping to them to fix it, but they would give me a warranty for 1 year. I have a ton of games I want to play on my xbox. I know there are some choices but dont know what to do. I am a little afraid to open up the xbox even though I think I can do it. Ive changed hard drives in computers and stuff like that before. I heard I could purchase a 19.95 warranty from microsoft, but Ive already called them gave them my serial number and the problem, so I dont think that would work, or would it? I could sell my old one for $50 or so on website or ebay ive seen (and if anyone knows a good site to sell to please let me know). And after selling it buy a new one for about $135 (with store discount that my friend could get). I also heard you could buy a new drive and put it in yourself, but for a good drive its costing upward from $60, not much less then sending it to microsoft and getting a warranty. I also saw you could get the Thompson drive for $25, or replace the laser assemplies for about the same cost for the phillips drive I already have.
I dont really have the money to do any of this because the money I have is being saved for some classes I need to take. Im also kinda leary about spending money on it since the xbox 360 will be coming out shortly. However, I dont want all the games I have to go to waste. I do have a PS2 to play in the mean time though. Do you have any recommendations at all. Any opinions would be appreciated so that I can make a decision on this with some educated analyzis and other peoples opinions. Thanks in advance.
