I just got my xbox back from getting it repaired...I turn it on ready to play some games and guess what?...Hard drive completley erased...Also not to mention a different serial number...what gives? Did they send me another xbox? If so im going to complain seeing as it is older than mine...even if its just older by a day (and i mean a day...the s/n date is off by one day) What should I do?

I doubt they would send a new one. His is getting fixed now and will get sent out when its finished to some one else.

I bought a new one not 2 months ago and the thomson drive was failing...so i sent it in to get the drive REPLACED...after I recieved it today I called about my game saves and she said and i qoute "You have to prepare for those kind of things when you send it in for repairs" my thoughts were "so you need to erase my harddrive and prolly around 300 hours of gaming to change the disc drive?...seems odd to me...

Thats really shitty...I mean...come on if you cant fix someones xbox and send em theyre xbox back what is the point of having a repair center that you send it to...why cant i give it back and they give me another?...Same thing except i got screwed out of 15 more dollars for a refurbished system when orig. I bought a NEW system

Shit like that has happened to me before. It sucks. That's all you can say, it sucks.

Its not really a skeem, that is how most companies handle stuff like this. Just ship the customer out a replacement, then fix the broken one.
You coulda prepared for the worst, bought a memory card and put all your save files on it.
only problem with that is a memory card will only hold 2 games of Halo and Rallisport (only 500 blocks)

Hmm, I always thought they held more. They are 8 megabytes aren't they?

yeah...500 or so blocks...XBOX saves are huge because of the hardrive...mem cards are mainly for bringing a save over to your friends instead of bringin your box

Damn my Xbox just started skipping this week I was thinking about sending it in for repairs but not if all my save files are going to get erased .
Could you have imaged the HD using ghost? Would that have worked?
I dont think you can ghost an Xbox HD because it uses XBFS (Xbox file system) and Ghost wont properly copy the files. I think i read that ghost just wont do it on Xbox-Scene somewhere...

IF you really want to save you stuff one of the few things you could do is maybe install Evox or another similar Linux based OS by using the Nightfire or Mechassault hack and then FTP them over to your comp. Im not sure if this would even work, but it might...You couldnt install a mod chip cuz that would void your waranty(Thats probably spelled wrong). Or you could just suck it up and buy the parts on ebay and fix the box yourself. Thats always an option.

Isn't there some gizmo out there that allows you to transfer save games to and from the Xbox hard drive? Could have sworn there was but I'm not interested enough to search for it.

BTW, the new/erased hard drive is to be expected. No amount of game saves is worth anything in the real world. This is the same real world where computers sent in for warranty work (computers that might contain sensitive and/or critical data) are routinely reformatted and restored to factory original settings. Just gotta deal.

Its possible that something like an Action Replay or Gameshark will allow you to hook your box up to your computer and save your files there.
