Xenosaga Episode 2 Jenseits von Gut und Bose

Ultros

CAGiversary!
Just how darn good is this game??? I have heard mixed reviews from a bunch of reviews and am deciding whether or not to purchase this game. I did not like Xenosaga 1 that much but I thought it was okay. I like Sci-Fi RPGs though. And is the Limited Edition guide worth it? (to a collector I guess) 25 bucks seems a bit too much for a guide.

I haven't played yet but I'm planing to once I find my missing promo dvd. I'm also planing to buy the limted editon guide. So I'll keep you updated.

This game is fucking TERRIBLE. Namco suckered me with the sweet trailer, but the game is more of the same bullshit. Shion, KosMos, Momo, and Chaos all have new voices and all of them are much worse than the original. The music is downright awful in some spots such as the foundation and the durandal. The first part of the game is a flashback scene, and while it rocks, the next 2 or 3 hours of the story is totally disjointed and feels like random events held together with duct tape. When the story finally starts to get interesting and starts to flow, theres THREE fuckING HOURS OF STUPID SIDEQUESTS TO DO before you move the story along. The battle system is suprisingly good and does take some skill and planning to get good at. Unfortunately, none of the characters except KosMos have any special attacks, so there is virtually nothing that distinguishes them in battle. The skill system rocks, but again anyone can learn any skill and there's nothing distinguishing.

Maybe I'm being overly hard on it again because I was expecting so much, but the first 10 hours have been a severe disappointment. If you want a Sci FI RPG stick with Star ocean 3.

Did I mention that you will be doing most of the battles of the game in SWIMSUITS, since they give such good stat bonuses? How are you supposed to take this game seriously?

LE guide rocks, even though the soundtrack is underwhelming.

Well personally I'm rather enjoying it! The only new voice that bothers me is Momo. Also, the character models all look better when they get in their new outfits (MOMO looks terrible in her old outfit).

Battle System is pretty good. The lack of individuality between the characters is a little unfortunate but as a whole, the battle system is better.

Music is definetly not as good. Some of it feels out of place. However, after a while you do get used to it and it doesn't bother you at all. The battle victory music seemed so akward at first (especially since I was used to the first episode's theme) but now it's normal.

As a whole, I'm really enjoying the game. If you think a game's story is the most important part, then Xenosaga II (and I) should be an enjoyable experience for you. However, if you disliked Xenosaga I then you probably won't like Xenosaga II much more, though it is alot more tolerable with shorter movie sequences (that are much better directed) and being a little more interactive.

To be a fair reviewer I'd give it a B, but if you're like me you'd give it an A...

Star ocean 3?! oh hell no.
Or just stick to the greatest sci-fi rpg game in history Xenogears.
oh yes but werd on this. Xenogears still does it for me. I wish the battle system was the same. There was no greater feeling then when I was in disk 2 and had all the deathblows learned for fei and I could take down entire gears with just him. And the story.... ::sigh:: soooo good.... But on the same note, if anyone ever tried to remake it, I hope they keep the graphic style (maybe just clean it up a lil bit) and same everything...

you dont have to purchase it now. Its not going to become rare, and like its predecessor, the price is going to eventually drop to the 20ish range. I really wanna play it, but I'm gonna wait for a better price, since there are plenty of other games to play in the meantime (there always are).

The guide isnt going to be worth more than it is now, its just a collectors thing IMO.

Um I just wanna comment on the music that everyone claims is so terrible. The composer of Xenogears and Xenosaga Episode I did not come back for Episode II. His name is Yasunori Mitsuda and he also did Chrono Trigger/Cross and some of Shadow Hearts I/II. The music during the cutscenes rocks. Its by Yuki Kajiura who has done a lot of anime and it's very well done and true to what Mitsuda was doing in the original games. However the BGM was done by Shinji Hosoe. He's done a lot of music for Namco games since the 80's. I'd say about maybe 1/3 of the music he did is decent but imo a lot of it seems out of place.

Yuki Kajiura is specifically responsible for the music in shows like Gundam Seed and .Hack, I'm kinda suprised a person would ask if they're going to like the sequel if they didnt like the original as it stands to reason that aside from the character designs being switched to a more FF proportional style and battle system adjustments that there wouldn't be much difference.

Also Xenosaga 1 is already 20 bucks because it's a GH game now.

You just have to wait for episode 5 my friend.
As I understand it they reworked the story to avoid redoing Xenogears since it beleongs to Squeenix now.
What!? I thought monolith own the right to it.

I don't know all the details of course, but they apparently said in one of their official xenosaga books that they printed in japan that there was a huge timeline thing and mentioned that the 'Gears story line "may or maynot" ever be directly touched on again because of legal issues so the likenesses of characters like Fei and Ellie might show up but they can never be named as such.

Really? I heard that square sold the rights to namco. I could be wrong but I remmeber reading it in my egm mag.

Careful about putting faith in things said in EGM. Square re-released 'Gears just before 'Saga came out as if they were trying to snag a few extra sales on a game they'll never see profits of a sequel to.

Monolith reportedly left Square because they lost a chunk of their budget to FF7 during development causing the 2nd Disk to be mostly a Boss rush with narrated sections to explain why they were fighting a boss.
TC 4767 is indeed the year that this all goes down, according to the Xenogears Perfect Works Book, but in that same year the Eldridge is supposed to have been launched and no mention of that is made in Episode I. The most common explanation is that Xenosaga is the rewrite of Xenogears, and the story of the original Xenogears will also be reworked and re-written in a future episode of Xenosaga, featuring familiar characters and story elements under different settings and names. However, everything is up for speculation, as there is no official word on how Monolith Soft plans to deal with the story of the original Xenogears.
Yeah the second disc does seem to suck. Its still an awesome game though.

Once you get to roam around in the world on the 2nd disk it's pretty cool and the story is pretty powerful although it definetly was lacking compared to the 1st disk. That game is definately one of my all time favorite RPGs.

However, there's numerous reasons why Xenogears will never occur in the Xenosaga world. 1) Square has the rights to Xenogears. They never sold them. 2) The story so far does not match Xenogears at all! Xenogears was episode 5 out of 6. In the first episode you find out about the eldridge then at the end it crashes. In the second you meet Cain, Abel, Elly and Mei Lang (or whatever her original name was). The third is when they're in the zebloim (forgot the name) civilization with kim and elly and when emerelda was born. In the 4th (which has the best story line besides episode 5), we meet Lacan, Krellian, Elly, Roni, etc. The 5th is the one we all know. The 6th is the aftermath after Fei comes down from defeating Urbulous.

Let's match this to the Xenosaga story line. It doesn't fit at all. There are a few similarities like Nephilim looks like Elly, and of course with all the zohars (and I hear Xenosaga 2 talks about anima relics... I'm not that far yet).

So let me summarize this entire little ramble with 4 words.

XENOSAGA IS NOT XENOGEARS!
