Well, isn't camoor just trying to elicit a response out of you by posting that, thus trying to garner some attention (most likely to be negative) out of you?

Isn't the simple act of making a post, in some sense, a way to try to gain attention from others (otherwise, why would you bother to post... you can talk to yourself just fine without the assistance of such unwieldy tools that can lead so frequently to misreadings and misunderstandings (pcs, paper, etc)

Of course, I'd much rather read your intial post than to see a thread full of nothing but " QFT!!! LAWLZ!!! ".

OMG. You "riced" out your car, really exceeded the speed limit, and got away with it cause you made up some BS.

You're so hardcore!

congrats on passing the flesh pole breathalyzer

i've passed through several roadblocks fucked up in college. the secret? i rode everywhere with my 100lb german shepherd. the cops got a kick out of talking shit to the dog and trying to get it to attack and kill and what not. they'd usually end up laughing and i'd swerve on through.

The thing I find odd, however, is that there really is no basis for the invocation of a "double standard".
It could have very easily been that the cop was cutting her a break because she was speeding on an empty highway... where there's no real harm to be done, so the officer just makes the stop and gives the warning.

Could she have gotten out of it because she's a woman? Sure.
Do we know that for a certainty, or even a likelyhood? Not really.
All that's been built up so far is this illusory image that people have built up and are more than happy to take swings at.

That's probably why the most entertaining thing to come out of this thread so far is probably the reemergence of JimmieMac's offer to send out to the more sycophantic of his respondants an autographed and personalized 8x10. It's been quite a while since I've actually seen that posted.

Sweeney, I assure you. Had it been me in my car - a 23 year old male in a 2000 Mustang - not only would I have a ticket, but I'd have landed my ass in court for such brazen disregard to speed limits.

Shit. I might have had to serve a few days in jail for that.

Texas doesn't exactly look kindly upon speeding. And given the "YOUNG MEN ARE fuckTARDS BEHIND THE WHEEL" mentality, I can assure you I would have had my ass handed to me.

Meanwhile, my gf - who speeds almost ALL the time - has literally gotten out of 4-5 tickets that a I know of. She likes to parade that information around in front of me. And the one time she got one, she literally threw it out the window, and absolutely no negative repurcussions came her way.

But would that be because of the way you addressed the officer citing you for the offense, or because of a "double standard"?

Texas doesn't exactly look kindly upon speeding. And given the "YOUNG MEN ARE fuckTARDS BEHIND THE WHEEL" mentality, I can assure you I would have had my ass handed to me.

Is the overriding bias that "young men are fucktards behind the wheel"?
I though it was more that ALL teenagers are fucktards behind the wheel, thus the exorbinant cost of insuring them. It seem to me that in the past couple years the bias has been actually shifting, with most people seeing teenage girls (not boys), as the mosted fucked up and irresponsible things on 4 wheels (except their 90 year grandmother who refuses to give of her liscense).

Meanwhile, my gf - who speeds MUCH worse than me - has literally gotten out of 4-5 tickets that a I know of. She likes to parade that information around in front of me.

That is bad. I'm actually surprised that would be the case. Unless you're a brash asshole to the officer citing you for the offense, it does seem that such a thing really shouldn't happen. (Of course, the severity of the offense would have to be considered as well... 5 over is one thing... 25 is quite another.

And the one time she got one, she literally threw it out the window, and absolutely no negative repurcussions came her way.

That's messed up. If I were the officer in that situation, the lights would have flicked right back on, the ticket would be written for the maximum allowable penalty, and I'd write out a littering ticket.

They'll throw you in jail for doing 15 over in DC, or having one glass of alcohol.
They'll throw you in jail for doing 15 over in DC, or having one glass of alcohol.
Really? Wow.
Of course, I guess in DC you'll have a higher consistant traffic volume than in say, the middle of Iowa, or Northern Wisconsin or Michigan.

Of course, expressway and surface street travel are going to be entirely different scenarios... I could see someone being far more serious about someone doing 60 in a 45 on city streets as opposed to 80 in a 65 on the expressway.

Well, when I'm stopped by an officer, I immediately turn off my car, place the keys in my cupholder, roll down my window, and have my insurance and ID at the ready, long before he even strolls up to my window. I address him as sir, I speak loud and clearly, and I make no moves. I don't get out of my car, I don't undo my seatbelt, I don't question his authority, etc. It's a pretty model approach through and through. I don't ask him "What's the problem, officer?" I don't call him a cop. I don't crack jokes. If I am getting pulled over, I obey all signals and get into a safe location as quickly as possible.

So given all of that, I'd say my approach is cordial, respectful, and direct. So that throws out the possibility of me being a jerk to him.

As for the "teens are fucktards behind the wheel," that may be true, but it is absolutely weighted more heavily against young men. We pay the highest premiums. This is just fact.

My gf has gone a few miles over to as much as 15-20 over. I don't know what she's been called on when she's stopped, but it doesn't seem to matter. In every case I know of, she's gotten out of it without any fear she wouldn't.

I wasn't going to put this into the conversation, but it does seem to matter than I'm driving what is essentially a "sports car." I think that does call into question bias and generalizations. I left that out in the first post because it is a weak argument, but since you're inferring that I'm a dick to the cop, I'll add this in as part of my "double standard" argument. Whereas my gf drives around an Infiniti sedan, I'm driving a 2-door sports car, and if you honestly think that doesn't draw negative attention to me, I can't be convinced you have a driver's license.

That all said, I don't speed much at all. My gf says I drive like her grandpa, and that's something I can live with.

Wish I had cruise control though.

I'd say so... seems like you're adhering to the textbook way to handle such things.

As for the "teens are fucktards behind the wheel," that may be true, but it is absolutely weighted more heavily against young men. We pay the highest premiums. This is just fact.

Yes, it is. However, that has been begining to normalize. With teenage girls doing more driving, the rates of them being involved in accidents have been rising, and along with this, the premuims charged to that class.

Ok, that's just wrong then. I mean, I've been pulled over a number of times, and been let go on things that are 5 miles per hour or less over the speed limit, but I never expected it. That feeling of entitlement scares me. Given that, I could see how you'd have a deep dislike for the "double standard" you see.

I'd think that has more to do with you being pulled over more frequently that her, as the Mustang will be far more likely to draw the eye than an Infiniti. I really doubt the driver has much to do with it... a women or a man driving a sports car is just more likely to get pulled over than a sedan, as in general, the person in the sports car is more likley to be speeding (it's what the cars are designed for)... pulling over sports cars is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Of course, I think all of this just makes the water even murkier Strell... given this, you can't really compare two like quanties... comparing your situation in a sports car and hers in a sedan seems a bit like comparing apples and oranges, and there are going to be subsets of biases and other such weights placed on decisions because of the make and models of the cars.

This could introduce what might even be yet another "double standard"....

That all said, I don't speed much at all. My gf says I drive like her grandpa, and that's something I can live with.

Hey, as long as you drive safe, right?

My point is that the frequency of being pulled over doesn't matter. What DOES matter is what happens after you've been stopped. I highly doubt a cop sees what gender is driving the car he's about to flag down. He just wants to flag them down and give them a ticket.

But that is when the situation changes. If my gf is pulled over, she gets out of it almost all the time. But if I get pulled over, I'm fucked. The car we're in almost doesn't matter (I realize I said that to begin with, but I did call it a weak argument originally as well).

My beef is that the point of contact is what differs. VG gets pulled over twice for shit she probably knows it wrong (though the window tinting thing is suspect) and gets out both times. This is even when she KNOWINGLY does something that will help out her cause (fake crying). That's kind of retarded. Law is meant to be neutral decisions for the most part. Not all black and white with no gray, but I think we can agree 83 in a 50 is egregious speeding, especially when she's bragging about going 90.

If I were a cop, no matter what the case (unless an extreme case like a woman giving birth), I wouldn't let anyone go that fast. I don't care if you're out in the boonies or not, it's the fact that speed kills, and there's threshholds that, when violated, should be hard driven into the ground. Fake crying, man. C'mon now, that's just fucked up. If I flashed tears, would I get out of it? Or do I need to pull my dick out too if it's a woman cop who happens to be horny?

It doesnm't really matter to me, cuz I do drive like a grandpa. But I don't like the fact that the bipolarity exists. That's fucked up. And I know I ragged on VG in this thread, but it doesn't even have anything to do with her so much as it has to do on a broad spectrum. Cop finds a girl and she goes free regardless of what caused her to get pulled over? Bleh.

In any case, I don't drive like a fool. I've got nowhere to be so important that I've got to speed, so I just don't.

I'd be more in favor of giving officers a degree of latitude, and often erring toward mercy instead of continuously bringing the hammer down, but by and large, I agree with most of what you're saying.

However, biases and double standards are just part of what American society is right now... to assume or suggest police officers would be above this is just a little too optimistic.

Of course, none of this makes it right, fair... but it is how it is.
I don't care for most of it, and it makes it easy for some to manupate the system so, so easily and frequently.

However, I find it just a tad hypocritical for some of the people that have been posting to whine about her exploiting the system, when in numerous other posts across the board many of them are bragging about or asking how to manipulate other systems to their favor..

Just like in those situations, most of it is ethical questionable, but not illegal.
I'm rather curious though.... would more posters have been willing to play devil's advocate if it was a guy that had orginally posted this? Or would this thread have just died after a smattering of backslapping and cordial "good for you's" rather than just hurling a bunch of misogynist banter and ask for (and then posting) pictures?

Oh I won't pretend it'll ever change. But let's not pretend it's not there. I mean, isn't this the same reason why a 40 year old male teacher gets shitstormed when he fucks a 16 year old student, but reverse the genders and it's high fives all around? Another debate entirely, but falls under the umbrella of double standards. They will always exist, and in all reality I don't care about most of them until they directly affect me, but meh.

I think if a guy posted this, most of the responses would fall either negative or neutral. Most of them might be like this thread - "Man I can never get out of tickets." Of course we'd get the "fuck you, I can never get out of tickets, fucker" responses. That's to be expected. I'd wager, if there were a large population of girls responding, most of them would say "BFD, I get out of them too, know why? They're called breasts, boys."

I mean, shit. How many girls don't have trouble, say, getting into bars underage? Way more than boys I'd bet.

I think the only true way to test anything would be to have a lot of young men stopped by female cops and see what happens.

But aye, all up in the air, no way to prove it unless we did a study, and even then it would be hard to say anything definitive afterward.

I would argue that, but considering this statement from the first post, "So last Sunday, I was driving back from Portland (decided to start an 11 hour drive at 9 PM...)", I think your analysis of the situation may be a bit closer to the truth.
