i am wanting to build a gaming pc
i also need to use it for work as i do customer direct responce work from home.

the job isnt a big factor, as it is "web based" and only upgrades i need besides a speedy pc is to keep the latest version of java installed.

i will have app. $1000 - $2000 for the build.

i plan on using new egg exclusevily to save on shipping cost.

i am fairly puter savy, but have never built one from scratch, so any suggestions, hints, or critique of my build is highly appreciated.

still looking for a good newegg promo code

Holy shit. You went all out on that power supply. For what you have listed there, you do not need that power supply.

I suggest the Corsair 520, because I suggest the Corsair 520 for everything.

It seems kinda funny that you chose the 8600 after all that though. If you want the 8600 level VC, you're better off going with Radeon.

The 8800gt is still at ass-rape prices and the gts is even higher.

OH also, 4gb + xp do not mix without luck/tweaking your boot.ini

and don't buy your OS from NewEgg, they overcharge to the max.

and finally... a dial-up modem? ugh...

In my opinion, if you're building a gaming pc then the graphics card is more important than the processor. So, go with an 8800gt or 8800gts (g92) and an e6750.

It should turn out to be the same price, you're just shifting about $100 from the processor to the video card, if you go with the 8800gt 512mb.

Also that mobo's pretty pricey. Is there a reason you want to go with that one instead of a cheaper one (like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128050) with the same north/south bridge?

I think a part of the reason that mobos expensive is because of the built in WiFi and extra PCIe slot (non-SLI).

I don't like lights on cases though. My friend has this case and loves it. It looks really nice.

Get the 8800gt 512 for gaming. You wont regret it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130319 $40 over MSRP but still a good price for an amazing card.

64bit for full use of the 4gb of ram (also, I use 64bit all the time and havn't had problems running 32bit programs at all)

I really suggest that you get an 8800GT card or that Radeon 3850 if u cant afford the 8800.

8800 is gonna get you a lot of bang for your buck and is gonna save you from needing to upgrade for a while.
That is the dumbest shit I have ever heard.
DX 10 cards do awesome dx9.

Why do you think everyone had 8800gts before vista came out.
Hold up biatch, OP originally chose a 8600GT, not a 8800GTS. BIG DIFFERENCE. (a $150 difference)

From looking at the specs, the 7950GT should be able beat that 8600GT in DX9. (it's an assumption, but it's a safe assumption)

You would make a great lawyer. "That's not what I said! I didn't say that! Read back the court transcripts! SEE! SEE! I DIDN'T SAY IT! NEXT QUESTION!"

But now I see what you are talking about: The 8600GT has nothing over something like the 7950GT except for DX10, which the OP won't even be taking advantage of.

But hey, lets not try to make ourselves more clear. Lets call people names and get all worked up.

You said Nothing about getting a 7950 over a 8600.
You said that it is stupid to have a directx 10 card with using xp.
If you plan on sticking w/ XP, try this video card:

there's no point in getting a DX10 video card, if you're using XP.
I should have clarified. SORRY ABOUT THAT.

This is sooooo funny, we're bickering over video cards, lol. My apologies.

But yes, whether you have xp or vista, this is the ideal:

 i want that card so bad....

The only thing I've heard about the 9 series is the 9600GT which sounds like it will be close to the 8800GT/old GTS, and the 9800GX2 which sounds like the 7950GX2.

Nothing so far that makes me want to wait.

First If you are willing to spend 400 dollars on a video card, wait until this 9800gx2 card comes out. Its gonna be around 450 dollars and be 30% faster then an ultra.

Second DO NOT GET 64 bit XP.

Third 4 gigs of ram is not needed in an xp system.
2 gigs should be fine.

Otherwise looks fine.

Just curious, what's your reason for not getting xp64?

I would say buy an EVGA 8800GTS if you want it, then use the step up program for the 9200gx (or whatever it is) when it comes out.

Extremely horrible drive support would be the main reason. No one in their right mind uses 64 bit XP. 64 bit vista gets decent support, but not xp

truf.

I've been using 64bit xp since october and have not had one single driver problem. Even my printer has 64xp drivers (Brother 420cn).

Have you used 64bit recently?

Heres my opinion on the build, take it for what its worth. I built a Vista/Gaming PC this summer for under $1500 CAD.

1) Get an OEM version of XP if available. Its the smae OS, just cheaper and usually without fancy packaging. My vista copy came in a dvd jewel case w/o a big box.

2) That graphics card is old hat. I don't know much about newer dx9 cards though.

3) That powersupply is overkill. 500 W shoudl be perfectly fine, 600 to be safe and if you ever want to upgrade to Vista and throw a 8800GT in there.

4) If you want to overclock (its fun to oc a Q6600 :D) grab a better case. I recommend the Antec 900. This beast comes stock with 3 120mm fans and a 200 mm fan. Grab an extra for the side. Add this cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154001.

I also recommend picking up an anti-static wristband and some Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound (it is way better then the stuff already attached to the stock cooler).
Good luck with your build.
