Yet More Craigslist Stupidity!

Wii Sports was only $10 at GameStop and there were probably 1000 of them sold in the past year and they STILL go for $30-40 on Ebay.

Personally, I would probably be more inclined to buy a GameCube from Ebay for $20 more if it was complete, in new condition, etc. GameStop's used GameCubes have probably all been abused for 8 years by preteens.

I don't think you get it. There's nothing ridiculous about asking $50 for a GameCube. First, that price is negotiable unlike GameStops. Second, not everyone likes shopping at GameStop. Third, he might have games and other stuff with it. Fourth, he might sell it for less than what it costs at GameStop. Fifth, none of the previous 4 arguments I've made are even important. The only reason why that ad shouldn't have been posted is because this thread is for ridiculous craigslist ads, and that one was slightly overpriced at best.

Ok, defender of Craiglist Posters. You are assuming all these things....it may come with games, he may sell it cheaper than GS....

1. To sell it cheaper than GS or GC, he'd have to sell it for $25. Send him an offer of $25 and I guarantee you, you will get nasty reply about being a lowballer.

2. The listing specifically states Gamecube game console NOT Gamecube console with games, dvd's, a ferrarri, etc...maybe if he/she added games, controllers included, it wouldn't end up here on this thread

3. and it's stupid because he posted after these two postings:

FS: PlayStation 2 (299.99 version)+Remote+2nd Controller+Mem Card!!! - $150 (Northern, VA)

For sale is a slightly used (60hrs play time)PS2 with like new DVD/CD remote control and a second controller, Memory Card, Vertical Stand and Dust Cover plugs. This is the original 299.99 unit (motorized tray)that was made before SONY was cutting corners with internal parts...This unit works like the day it was taken out of the box, it was never left on for more then 5hrs at a time, it was always kept Vertical for cooling and lenz motor assy accuracy, this unit plays all PS1+PS2 games as well as any CD+DVD combination. Sellind because i dont play anymore and this would make a great gift, will come in original BLUE box like it was bought years ago...

I know that my price is higher then what you see out there, but this is one the first units made...just like with current systems like PS3, which came @ $600 and now is going for $400 and soon will hit $350 or even $300, but just because the price went down the original units that sold @ $600 are better as they have all the options and are not downgraded over time!!! And i am only selling my PS2 because i was lucky enough to get the original $600 PS3 unit!!! The PS2 i have is the fully backwards comatible with extra hookups at the front and a more complex internal structure!!! The unit was bought brand new @ 299.99, i am not a big gamer, but i do play once in a while, and all the accessories are in like new condition, used 4-5 times other then the original controller!!! My price is firm and if you dont want to pay that much, no need to reply!!! there are plenty used units out there that are in your price range!!!

Thanks for looking...

See, because it's an EVEN OLDER PS2, it's worth more!

Not stupidity....but, holy shit dude, take that $500 and buy a new PS3....Justice will not prevail, even if you catch this guy....the worst he'll get is three hots an cot, he probably won't mind the big house and then we end up paying for it in taxes....

I'm totally on the look out for this PS3...probably get it for $300 or less and then get reimbursed by this guy!

WANTED: PS3 - $500 (Milwaukee)

Reply to: [email protected] [Errors when replying to ads?]
Date: 2009-04-25, 12:16PM CDT

I am willing to offer a $500 reward for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of whoever entered my house near 78th and Capitol and stole my PS3.

The PS3 has been reported stolen to Sony and anyone who attempts to connect to the interenet will have their IP address traced and be arrested. I am telling you this because if you recently purchased a PS3 and have reason to believe it's mine, I will not only give you $500 for the name of the person who sold it to you but I will also release the stolen tag on it and let you keep the PS3 so you will not be out any money. The alternative is that the police confiscate the PS3, you get arrested for either theft or recieving stolen property, plus you will be out the money you paid for it.

The PS3 is

160 gig,
Registered on the Playstation Network
Has one user name on it
Trial of MLB 09 The Show
$25 to the Sony Store

If your PS3 resembles any of these things and you suspect it's mine email me the screen name used for the Playstation Network and i will tell you if it's mine.

Well if you don't get it you don't get it... there are millions of posts where people ask for slightly more than the average going rate on craigslist. I would say anything more than like $150 for a GameCube is getting into the post-worthy category. What's the point of posting an ad where they ask for $50 for a GameCube? Who are you impressing with that post? Who are you amusing? What's the motivation? What's the point?

What's the point of posting an ad where they ask for $50 for a GameCube? Who are you impressing with that post? Who are you amusing? What's the motivation? What's the point?

you know I didn't post it right?

Well if you don't get it you don't get it

There is really nothing to get, other than that your opinion is that $50 is a reasonable listing price for a used gamecube console and $10 for Bill Lambeers crappy game is reasonable, etc. What you don't get is there is no set rules for what is "stupidly" overpriced and what isn't. I think for the most part I think most of the regulars would agree that it is overpriced, would they post it if they saw it, I can't say....hey man, there's slow days on Craigslist too, it's not everyday that someone list a nintendo wii for $900 or something crazy stupid like that.

And for the most part, at least from my experience out here a lot of people really don't budge on price and that's even with O.B.O. in their listing. And there is no way somebody would rather buy a GC off of a stranger than a GS or GC. It's too crazy out here, especially on the North Side, there have been numerous accounts of people getting robbed when meeting people, even in public places, they ask to see the games and take off running. So even if a person didn't like shopping at a game store.....they would if not for the $30 price, but for the safety and guarantee that it works

Wow, what a spectacular idiot. Probably a sales executive...what a load of BS allbeit beautifully spun. "More complex internal structure"...ummm, yes that's true, but that's NOT a good thing, that's a BAD thing. More complexity and more moving parts = more wear and tear and chances for breaking down. I love how he says it's pretty much a launch model as if that's a good thing as well.

Those are horribly unreliable...hello! Doesn't anyone remember the DRE's from hell?

LOL...remember that topic about the guy getting a quote on some PS1 rarities from the game store in Orange County?

RE: game store in Fountain Valley looking to buy games - for pennies (RIP OFF CITY)

Reply to: see below

I took a bunch of games down to this clown's store based on his "advertised buying prices" that he keeps bombarding us with here on craigslist, and I even read the fine print about those prices quoted beinf for "complete mint copies".

Well, ALL of my games are mint and complete, and Mike here starts trying to backtrack on the buying prices he's quoting because he says "oh this game's sticker has a little scuff" or "this cart is a little dirty" and nonsense like that. Then he says the quoted buying prices, which are EXTREMELY low for mint complete copies BTW, are actually for store credit ONLY. He wants to give me $40 store credit for my mint, black label copy of Final Fantasy VII - YEAH RIGHT! I can get $80 for it CASH at that big retro game store in the LA Valley, gamedude or whatever. I can get much more than that even, if I sell it on craigslist, ebay, or amazon marketplace. This guy's prices are literally pennies on the dollar. $5 cash for a complete Megaman 5 or 6??? $40 cash for an complete Earthbound?!? That's worth over $200 right there!

This guy is a scam artist lowballer SCUMBAG. Go see him if you want to get RIPPED OFF!!! I heard he even took some kid's DS Lite, as in STOLE IT, when the kid brought it into the store to get some money for it without bringing his parent/adult.

Please flag his ads as spam and overpostings, you know the ones. Same with that other crap store that keeps bombarding us with ads about console repairs and crap.

Disclaimer: I am in no way whatsoever claiming that this is a ridiculously outrageous price for a Wii Fit as it is only $10 above retail. The purpose of my posting is just to pose a question to fellow visitors of the Craigslist Stupidity Thread. It is not my intention to impress, amuse, motivate, or even prove a point to any intentional or unintentional readers of my post as there may be a possibility that the seller of aformentioned listing on Milwaukee's Craigslist may or may not have the intention of negotiating with a potential buyer of the product listed on Milwaukee's Craigslist and thus lowering the price of the product listed to approximate retail value or possibly even lower than MSRP. I claim no knowledge of possible extras that may be included with the product listed therefore justifying the approximate $10 over retail pricing.

 ;)

I don't know about your areas but, stores around here have been stocked for months and they been throwing all kind of promotional deals and freebies with these at the store to try and sell them. But, I constantly see one or two yokels still trying to pawn these off for $100+

Scumbag scoops up any cheap NES's in games/toys and turns around and sells them for 60......as with the rest of pre-nes consoles.....scumbag
Looks like someone's mad they didn't get to the cheap systems/games first. Can I say cry some more here? Yes, I think I can.

If you're not quick enough to grab up the deals, then whatever reseller/hoarder/general asshole gets there before you has every right to buy them and mark them up to $1k each if they want.

I don't even try for CL stuff anymore, since I procrastinate too much many times before deciding I want something, but I will give sellers with something sought after/rare a quick e-mail if I decide I'm not interested to tell them they've got something worth more than what they're asking.

I figure, why make it easy for the resellers.

yeah and the people who expect 100's of dollars for an NES with 20-25 games all common, none worth more then $5 tops, then your ad gets mysteriously flagged

Is using the highest priced auction on ebay the base point?

If you look on CL and go 'oh that lot isn't worth enough for me', then you're no longer a gamer, you're a fuckin' reselling jerkoff who needs to get beat to the real deals EVERY TIME.

Mind you, I wouldn't pay crap for an old ass NES with the wonky connectors and 2-3 copies of SMB/DH and some other generic stuff, but if it had some games I'd get some enjoyment out of I might consider it.

I guess I'm the only gamer in this thread who actually buys games to PLAY and isn't looking to supplement their income off of the stupidity of sellers.

i'm not really in the flipping business myself, just like to get stuff to keep and hold on to

you gotta really dig on craigslist, I'm gonna go the yard sale route this year.

Craigslist is a barren wasteland in my area around here, so I mainly try for the flea market/yard sale route, but I'm rarely up early enough to beat the resellers at either venue. Plus, many flea market/yard sale people tend to overvalue stuff too.

Gonna hit up a flea market tomorrow morning really early before all the bargain hunters get there. I remember a mexican dude selling a box of NES carts for $5 each, alot of them were dirty as hell but I did get dragon warrior once.

Who posted this?......... :bouncy:

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/tag/1150222578.html

Here are some helpful hints for some sellers on here that may not be clued in to the realities of the value of the goods they are trying to sell, specifically video games and video game systems.

This advice is certainly not comprehensive nor does it cover every game, game system, and situation, but for the most part it holds true.

The easiest way to tell if you've set your asking price too high is if you get no responses to your ad after 1 week, or if the few responses you get are scammers asking you to ship your stuff. Sometimes, you might even get someone who emails you to tell you your prices are way too high, or who strings you along basically just to screw with you for the same reason (high prices).

The easiest way to tell if you've set your asking price too low is if you get flooded with calls or emails about a certain item. This is especially true if you put up for sale a lot of games, and a bunch of people email and/or call you and these people all request only the same game or games. They are trying to cherrypick the good ones and leave you with the crap. Or if you get a flood of people trying to buy the entire lot you're selling for the asking price or offering a bit more, then you know you've got something hot that you should research a bit more.

That said, this is NOT ebay. This is craigslist, the online swapmeet/garage sale. People generally expect things to be discounted from eBay prices, since you as a seller are most often getting straight cash for the transaction and don't have to deal with the hassles of packaging and shipping the items or the exorbitant ebay/paypal fees. In other words, DO NOT EXPECT EBAY PRICES/VALUES ON CRAIGSLIST, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THAT, PUT YOUR SHIT ON EBAY.

People on here are generally not (too) stupid. So don't try to scam people. Be upfront about the condition of the stuff you are selling, and ask a reasonable price and it will be sold. On the same token, don't be a rude lowballer and insult the sellers.

Now, on to the videogame specific advice.

#1. The Nintendo Gamecube. Nintendo Gamecubes are next to worthless, since the Nintendo Wii is fully backwards compatible. Every Gamestop in the country has a ton of used Gamecubes that they can't sell at $30 a piece (and yes that includes all the cables and a controller), so what makes you think yours is special and worth $50, $60, or even $120??? Sure, there are a handful of games for the system that are actually worth some money, as well as a couple of the accessories that are worth some decent coin, but for the most part, the system and the games are just about worthless. Don't believe me? Take your used Gamecube games to any Gamestop and see what they'll give you for them. And check their used gamecube game prices. Most are under $10, and very very few are over $20. No, I'm not going to give you a list of the games and accessories that are worth $$$, do your own research.

#2. The Playstation 2. The old PS2 "phat" systems are not worth much, because they are far less reliable than the newer slim ones. And brand new slim PS2s are available for $99 retail at every place that sells video games (and even less on sale here and there, on amazon, etc.), so don't go asking $120, $150 or more for your system and a couple or even a bunch of shitty games. Not many of the games are worth much money. Again, check Gamestop.

#3. Old XBoxes are pretty worthless, along with most of the games for the system. Gamestop doesn't even bother buying old XBox games any more - they're trying to clear their inventory out. Most of the games are under $10 or even $5.

#4. Older systems' games and consoles. All of the above systems are last generation. Like virtually all electronics, outdated videogames and videogame systems lose value and depreciate faster than a new car driven off the car lot. With newer and more technologically advanced games constantly being created, new games are already outdated a couple of weeks after they are released. VERY few old games hold up well with the passing of time. VERY few old games are actually worth any sort of money, particularly since each and every game from the Nintendo NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Game Gear, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation PS1, Nintendo 64, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Turbografx etc. is available for emulation. Hell, I can put just about every game released until 1999 on my PSP's memory stick and play them all portably. I can do the same with almost all of those games on a Nintendo DS with the right memory card.

That's not to say ALL old games are worthless, some are actually worth very good money. And there are many websites out there to help a person find out which ones are worth $$$ and the value of the rest, the majority of which are not worth much at all. Amazon marketplace and eBay completed transactions help with defining pricing, but there are sites like rarityguide and videogamepricecharts which are far more accurate and useful.

For the most part, old Atari, NES, and Master System games are worth at best $.25-$2.00 each, or less, when bought in bulk. Yes, paying a quarter to 50 cents a piece for old Nintendo Entertainment System NES carts is decent price and about what they are worth. Many of these games' connector pins and circuit boards have rotted and are no longer playable. Most games with built in batteries need their batteries replaced since they are long dead. SNES, Genesis, PS1 games are also worth very little individually. Of course it all depends on condition of the games, whether the games are complete or not, conditions of manuals, cases, boxes, etc., but generally these old games are only worth $.50 to a few dollars individually. Consoles are generally cheap and easy to find. Boxed/complete NESes, SNESes, Genesis etc. are NOT rare. And sports games over a year old are for the most part WORTHLESS. This includes Madden 2009, which in a couple of months, when Madden 2010 is about to release, will be worth only a few dollars.

#5. Selling bundles of games without LISTING THE INDIVIDUAL GAMES YOU ARE SELLING. Very, very annoying. Most people won't waste their time coming out to see your games if you don't bother telling them exactly which games you have. Just be upfront and list the games in your ad - it doesn't take that much time. Anything to deter a customer will cost you customers, so telling them to phone you, email you, or otherwise contact you to get the information will deter them from bothering, because they will think (usually rightfully so) that your bundle of games consists of nothing but crappy worthless games and they will not waste their time. If you aren't straight up and forthcoming with the list of games, people will realize that the game bundle you have is crap and won't waste their time. But if you price it right and are upfront in advance, you will get it sold.

That is I who posted this brilliant message (It was actually Karkyco who posted it first in the LA area). I have many people who worship the ground I walk on because of that brilliant posting. But I don't deserve the credit. Karkyco does. He is quite the columnist.
yeah, you're like a modern-day hero or some crap.

sheesh.
Damn straight. I just wish more people would research what they're trying to sell. If they did, we would have no need for the stupidity and finds threads relating to CL then.

LOL!!!! This is crazy! Look at the keyword spamming.

"Hey I'm just a chubby white kid trying to make some cash while I'm in college, this isn't a scam or anything. all I require is the xbox, no wires or hard drives. I'm hacking your xbox 360 with ixtreme 1.51's latest firmware that allows you to download and burn games. This will save you thousands of dollars alone, 70 dollars and it's done in 40 minutes or less. No hassles, great tech support and more. I also have a method to remove your warranty sticker without voiding it. Also I know how to repair xbox 360's, hack nintendo wii's unlock iphones etc."
