Good luck. I think the only option is to open up the system and follow some of the guides listed online. Since you are out of warranty, it might be your best bet. I went through this recently and just said oh well. I was able to sell my YLOD console on EBAY (60GB original) and got over $120 for it.

Not that simple. The other PS3 will just format your hdd.
 
Hi man, I'm really sorry about your YLOD.

One method I've heard works sometimes is to start the console without a harddrive and then inserting it later (don;t have the actual details sorry)

another method that seems to fix the console at least temporarily is the hairdryer method (already known to anyone with a xbox. Take a look. In theory it hsould give you enough time to copy your saves and any other critical data, but it might damage your console permanently, so only use as a last, desperate resort

get an external harddrive and then if your console is really ylod ( because ps3s have more than one way to die) do the heat gun fix. it works ive done it more than once on my old 80gb ps3 but finally decided to get a slim because i had to fix the thing every few months and that gets old quick.

If he removes the HDD, he will lose the saves though, at least that is what I thought. As soon as you plug a hDD in, the PS3 wants to format...correct?

Not really, it will try to format a drive if said drive hasn't been used on that console. If you take out your drive and then plug the same one back in, it should (emphasis on SHOULD) recognize the drive and respect the data. If you move the disk to another console the new console would try to format it
 
yeap. ended up striping the power button switch cord and that cost me some time but i managed to jury rig it. now to sell it quick before it does again n get a new one.

Major hint to all. keep your ps3 vertical. disapates heat better.

Ok, so about a year and half my blue ray went out and had it repaired locally for $120.


Now as of 1hr ago I've got the ylod with black ops still in it. I am guilty of playing about 8hrs a day for the last 3 wks black ops and mag. This may be the contributing factor.

Now I guess because of the previous non-Sony repair I cannot send it to them right?, I do not have the tools to perform this fix:

Ok, my question fellow cags is, I can pay $65 to have it "fixed" or should just sell it and try to either buy one say off craigslist, a refurb from gamestop or the least wanted option a new unit?

As a cag, if I can get over the bc (I only have with me GOW 1/2, Art of Fighting Anthology, Fatal Fury Collection and FF VII. Other games are in storage far, far away...) I would like to know if possible the average lifetime of a refurb before ylod or if it's more of a 60gb or fat ps3 issue.

What's the cheapest alternative altogether recommended? I have searched and found mixed results on this ylod "fix" It seems to be temporary 3 mos at best. I couls care less right now about the size of the "new" (for me) ps3 hd. I plan to get a newegg special and upgrade.

P.S. Any way of getting the game out and bypassing this ylod or is that one of those include in the price if I chose to get rid of it?

you have to open the thing and fix it similarly to fixing the RROD on the 360, just has way more screws.

I think you should definitely go with a slim. Over Christmas break, my PS3 shut itself off because it said it was overheating. I didn't even know it could do that lol
 
My friend got the YLOD not too long ago and I found the site http://www.gophermods.com and his 60GB was able to be fixed for like $70 and he got it back within about a week's time. It was a much better option for him to get his system back (with Black Ops stuck in it) in about a week compared to $150 and a refurb replacement back in about a month from Sony. He's been using it for over a month and a half and it is working out nicely.
 
My PS3 kicked the bucket a week before Christmas and I decided to send it to Sony on the off chance I would get my own console back and not a refurb unit, thus keeping my saves. I got a PS3 from them on Friday (it was a refurb, but that wasn't really a big deal), hooked it up, and it was DOA. The PS3 they sent me had the exact same YLOD problem as the console I sent to them. Needless to say, I'm pretty
disappointed that I have to go through the whole routine a second time.
