YMMV? Best Buy $19.99 games (XBOX 360, Playstation 3, PSP)

jroget803

CAGiversary!
Hey...long time lurker, first time poster...

This might be extremely YMMV, but today at my Best Buy in Pennsyltucky (Muncy, PA), there was a display right before the checkout with a collection of games for $19.99

The games were all PS3, 360, or PSP. Didn't get a full title list of all the systems (I only own a 360), but here's the rundown

360:
Spider-man 3
Far Cry Instincts

PS3:
Spider-man 3
Genji (i think)
a few others that i can't remember

PSP:
Loco Roco
Possibly a few more

I know that spider-man is a good deal, so it might be worth a trip to your local best buy to see if they are running the same promotion

I can confirm that spiderman 3 brings the suck...

but for $20 if you're a fan its worth it...hell, I paid 60 day of release...

Is it just me, or does it seem like every Bestbuy deal posted in the last six months has been of the YMMV variety?

I mean it ain't your fault jroget803, and we all appreciate any whifs any cags choose to post...but has anyone else noticed this? Is it just the season for it, or are Bestbuys starting to leave more and more up to individual store managers? It's just kind of annoying to constantly read about deals that don't exist as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for the heads up regardless though.

Loco Roco has been $10 at a few places, and it is also one of the games in the Best Buy Front Row thread listed at 9.99.

My local BB have 50% off deal too but it's REALLY SUCK DEAL.

Super Man Return (XBOX 360) $50 - 50% off
Test Drive Unlimited (XBOX 360) $40 -50% off
Field Commander (PSP) $30 - 50% off
Dead or Alive Extreme Volley Ball 2 (XBOX 360) $50 - 50% off.
Ridge Racer 7 (PS3) $50 - 50% off

And couple old games full MSRP (you can find it cheaper at Kmart or TRU).

Yeah, pretty YMMV. At a BB here, they had Genji (PS3), some Wii golf game with a girl on the front, and DOA X2 (360) stickered at $19.99 on a shelf. Then I noticed that in their regular PS3 section, Genji was stickered at $59.99.

I got NBA Street Homecourt at BB for $20 a month or two back. They also had Armored Core (360), Godfather (PS3), Genji, and a few others.

It's 50% off the front row games.
Can anyone confirm this? I'd maybe think of spiderman 3, but then again I heard it got major suck factor
If it's anything like Spider-Man 2 then it's a complete piece of shit.

field commander isnt that bad for 15. though you can find it anyplace at that price

Here's why the Best Buy games are YMMV.

At one of my local Best Buy stores, they put a little circle sticker on any title that applies to the current discount. It used to be 25%, but now it's 50%.

Any game that gets the sticker gets the discount. Not all stores use the stickers, but it's easier for them, because it tells the cashier that the discount applies. Then they do it manually.

Last night I wanted to know if there were games that should be stickered (and hence receive the discount) but perhaps hadn't been.

So, I asked - how do they determine what games are eligible for the discount?

It's a three part process.

1. There is a master list that comes out (possibly weekly or monthly, that I don't know.) On this list are items that are considered "at risk." If it's on the list, it's up to the store to determine whether to discount it or not. These items receive a "C" on the title dividers in the video game section.

2. Look at the dividers in the video game section. If beneath the price for a particular title, there is a little, bolded "C", then the game has been marked for discontinuation. Once the stock is gone, it's gone. If you see a "C" there, then it is possible that the title can be discounted, but is up to the store whether or not to do so.

3. Usually, the determining factor of whether a "C" titled game gets discounted or not is the number in stock. The manager told me that even if it's on the list, it may not get discounted. If he has two or three copies, it probably won't. However, if he had a lot of copies, and thus the risk to them is great, then that title would get discounted (and at this location, a circle sticker.)

Just because a game is discounted once, doesn't mean it will again. For example, this location had 10 Metal Slug Anthology (Wii) and stickered it for discount. Now they have 2 in stock, and it's no longer discounted.

Since video game pricing is so competative, and they have limited shelf lives, it's in the best interest for the store to keep a reasonable amount in stock (ie - enough to serve the customers, but not to cost them money.) The more titles sit without purchase, the more the store is at risk for a loss.

So - that's the story. For the record, here are some of the titles on the list, confirmed last night. The YMMV part is whether your Best Buy can actually offer it to you at a discount or not. My store had none of these on discount:

Wii

Heatseaker
Prince of Persia: Two Thrones
Super Swing Golf
TMNT

360

Bullet Witch
Def Jam ICON
DOA Xtreme 2
NBA Street Homecourt
Spiderman 3
WWE vs Smackdown 2007

PS3

Genji
Ridge Racer 7

There were others, but that's all I can remember for sure.

On a side note, I got the Splinter Cell: Double Agent Limited Edition (360) for $19.99 because it was still around from a previous clearance and still had the sticker.

Thanks for the info orrimarrko. Nice to know. I'll be on the lookout for little c's that are bold. I felt like I was on Sesame Street when I wrote that.

"C" means clearance which means that Best Buy is not going to replenish that item. Prices then usually drop to get those items out of the store.
I work there.

Stopped by my favorite Best Buy last night. They used to have a game table with fantastic deals. I was hoping for the same.

They set out the table, all right. But it was Buy 1 Get 1 at 50% off. All of the games in Orrimarko's post were there, but at full price. Genji was still 59.99.

Had some PSP and DS titles (Dragonball Z Harukawhatever Densetsu was one) and GBA TMNT. But I could find two that, together, would be anything special.

Blah. I'll try a different BB today.

My local BB (Holyoke, MA) had many games with stickers about a month ago, some PS2 as well (Okami) When I asked the person working there she said that it only meant that those titles were being discontinued and that there was no discount. I should have asked someone else.....

I was at my Best Buy last night and picked up Top Spin 2 for $19.99. I don't know if it was marked down previously or not. I will stop back again on my way home today to take another look to see what they got!

I agree 100%. It seems like my local Best Buy never has any deep discount clearance items, so I'm forced to read about others getting fantastic deals nationwide.

Had a little success finally at one of these YMMV Best Buy markdowns...

Picked up the following, each for $19.99 brand new:

PS3
Def Jam: ICON
NBA Street: Home Court

Wii
Heatseeker
Super Swing Golf

An overall good day with the cheapies at Comp USA!

Peace,
Orri~

Let me guess, Best Buy in Lake Forest!

They are the only ones around here that actually attempt these YMMV clearances. I've never seen these types of deals @ Costa Mesa, Orange, or Tustin.

Yeah, but aren't you guys mixing up two completely different issues? The frontlane games are from a different vendor and aren't from Best Buy's regular game stock. That's why the same game in the regular game section will be normal price. The frontlane games have new UPC stickers pasted over the regular ones and they are usually generic for a given price point for a given system (ie, all $9.99 PSP games have the same UPC sticker).

What Orrimarrko is talking about, I think, is the very YMMV clearance that some Best Buy stores will have. The frontlane games are only YMMV in that they will have different stock at different stores - but if they are up there and have the new UPCs they will be the discounted prices (used to be $4.99 and $9.99 and now it seems they are doing $14.99 and $19.99 as well).

Anyway, there's a thread for frontlane discussion and it seems the OP is talking about frontlane games (and some new ones I might add). This should all go into that thread if that is the case. If anyone bought these and has the receipt, does it say something like "XBX-$4.99 FRONTLANE"? This is what my receipt for a $4.99 copy of Just Cause says. I would expect something similar for these 360/Wii/PS3 games if they are new frontlane stock. If they actually say the name of the game then they are probably just a YMMV local store clearance. If they had white price stickers on the front (and were located near the registers), it is a good indication that it is frontlane stock though.

These are not FrontLane games that people are talking about, but local markdowns. No generic white stickers on them or over the barcode. They're either in a special section/table with a sign indicating the markdown or they have yellow BB stickers that show 50%-off retail. So, it's more of a YMMV markdown rather than a YMMV FL selection.

Some of the OP's games were also at one of my local BBs and are not FL stickered. I just mentioned that the stickering (both markdown and regular copies had yellow BB stickers) of Genji differed within the same store only because it seemed that BB only stuck a few copies of it in the markdown section and left some in the regular PS3 section. I had them scanned and they both rang up for the markdown price of $19.99.

Yep, it was that one.

And to clarify, this is not confusion over frontlane games. This Best Buy takes the games that are on the list Orrimarko describes, and puts them on a table near the front, typically with prices written with a sharpie on big yellow stickers.

They'll ring up regular price, but you point at the sticker and say the magic words "game table" and they'll get a manager to come over and override the prices to whatever the sticker says.

In the past, they've had fantastic deals with $5 and $10 games.

This time around, they did a Buy 1 get one 50% off with multi-platform games, and since then have put only the 360 and XBOX games on the table with special prices on a printed sheet.

I've been in a few times -- last time was Saturday -- and the 360 special clearance is all they're doing. They have tons of copies of Genji, but none at 19.99 and I doubt there will be at this point.

Costa Mesa, once in a blue moon, will put a bunch of games in a box and price everything at $10. Last time they did this was near Black Friday and the titles were all pretty much losers. If they ever clearance a game, they leave it in right with all the other games.

Tustin has a ton of specially priced games -- special stickers, but not frontlane stickers -- but most of them are higher than a CAG would ever pay.

Selection by store varies as well. The Rivergate BB in Nashville had a decent selection last Friday which I posted in the Regional Thread and the other BB YMMV Clearance Thread. I know a lot of CAG's don't like wasting time or gas, but I've found that every once in awhile it pays off.

I never have seen these "50% bins" or "clearence bins" ever at my BB.

Only games I have seen on some clearence is the christmas bundles from last year....

Exactly my point. BTW, PM me if you notice any changes. Thanks
They definitely had Enchanted Arms for PS3 for $20.
I can't tell if you were being sarcastic. Every store has Enchanted Arms for PS3 for $20.

I actually had fun with Spiderman 3 for $20 it's well worth it. Don't go in expecting the greastest game and just have fun with it and you set. :D

Well, it was actually your post here, parKer, that made me think you were talking about frontlane games. And didn't someone report seeing Super Swing Golf (that would be the Wii game you are talking about) as a $19.99 frontlane game in the frontlane thread? Seeing a game (like Genji) marked $19.99 in the frontlane but $59.99 in the regular game stacks is typical of Best Buy's frontlane shenanigans ;). But maybe these were the YMMV clearance stuff and they just missed one. It just seems like Genji is a good candidate for frontlaning if they ever do PS3 games...

I almost did buy Genji for $20, but after playing the demo, I passed. I posted a few pics of the Wii FrontLane games (none were the Golf game - just Happy Feet, Bill & Mandy, and Legend of the Dragon) in the other thread and the only one that didn't make it into the pics was Red Steel. So far, the FrontLane only has relatively unpopular Wii titles.

In addition to YMMV markdowns on games, some of my local BBs also have accessories - XBOX 360 Coach headset ($15), some PS2 tilt controller ($12), XBOX 360 faceplates, XBOX 360 CD cases, etc.
