Yo CAG! Any recommendations on where to go in Japan?

CAGiversary!
Hey everyone, currently a friend and I are in Japan, in the Tokyo area. I've noticed there's a few people on the forums that are in or have been to Japan. So I was just wondering what are some places that we should hit up? Places that wouldn't be found in a travel guide, you know? I've already read the articles that were posted about cheap vg shopping in Aki and the listing of the top 10 stores there, so that's covered. Looking for maybe arcades, notable tourist places, notable stores, and anything else really worth visiting around the Tokyo area. Thanks!

Ummm that's an Oxymoron. Most of the time Aki is expensive as fuck, it's the most OVERRATED tourist attraction for gamers ever! I'd suggest surfing Yahoo! Of Japan auctions while you're there, win a bunch of shit new and have it shipped to your hotel then bag it with you on your flight out unless you're buying some 360 stuff or something.
Tokyo is good for arcades in Aki but prices are expensive as fuck. It was $1 a play for me to play "Quest Of D" or pretty much most other games. What I mean is game cost was a $1 minimum except for some Sammy shit pretty much or the reissue of SF.

Hm... had no idea. I guess it's the selection of stuff more than anything else that Aki attracts people with. Aren't all arcades games 100 yen anyways though? Thanks for the suggestions though!

Yeah I would totally hit up other islands and prefectures, but my traveling buddy doesn't have the money to do so. So we're just gonna stick to the Tokyo area.

Roppongi Hills looks bad ass from the pics Cheapy took in the YMIJ forum. You could easily blow 2 days there if you take your time. And ofcourse Shibuya(I know I spelled that wrong) Terminal is the place to be. Just sit back and watch the millions of people cross.

Yeah and I have to keep discrediting gamers image of it. In fact I should start a site SOLELY to the debunking of Akihabara as the gamers paradise, at least in price.

Tomorrow as in Monday CheapyD? My friend and I were actually planning on going there Monday. Maybe we'll come across each other?

I have no idea what these people are talking about. I've been to Akihabara on several occasions and got away with huge hauls of cheap video games, CDs, and merchandise. Of the used variety, of course.

Dammit stop trying to accredit this tourist trap. I've seen few deals on the used stuff I would find worthwhile. Seriously for most stuff Yahoo! Of Japan is your best bet. Shit I forgot about Terrors 2 for WSC, to buy it. Ugh.
Yongsan is such a better deal for console crap in general, well just buying the PC versions of em' from there. $15 and below for new PC ports of console product is awesome. I'm talking some old, some new. Caught Dracula X, SOTN, on PC there and I can only imagine how smooth it runs, see no load time or almost none. Yongsan also has a shitload more stores.

Just walk into random homes and talk to the people inside.

That's what they do in RPGs, anyway...

I'd definitely try and check out DisneySea ThemePark if you have the $, it's supposed to be incredible. It's the only Disney park of it's kind in the world (a spin-off, kinda like California Adventure or Epcot).

Make sure you find the cheap hole-in-the-wall stores and they have wonderful used deals. Also, I searched all over Japan for the best price for a Casio Word Tank w/ Chinese, Japanese, and English support, with a touch screen for characters, and found it for $300 ($100 cheaper than everywhere else) in Aki. It was a hole in the wall electronic store (next to the huge sofmap I believe), but it proved that deals could be had in Aki.

If you have time, head down to Osaka's DenDen town, there were a lot of good deals there too.

Edit: It's been a year, but I'm trying to remember some good shops in Aki. I believe there was a good row of stores right of the sofmap, down the street with a bank and a Moss Burger. There were about 3 good used goods stores with Samba de Amigo maracas and ridiculously cheap 'junk' (ie. used) goods.

Shit if you found Turbo Duo's, PC-FX or Marty's for cheap I'm down for that mega but I never saw that with any of em' except the Duo for a reasonable price.

Welp, just got back from Akiha. Wow, my friend and I just combed the main street, and damn I'm tired. All the stores were so much alike that I couldn't tell which was which at one point. So yeah, the new stuff is pretty much all priced the same. Used stuff you can find ok deals on. There was nothing that was dirt cheap. The thing is though, we only covered the main stores. Mainly the 10 stores that were on that list in that one article and some other big looking stores. We didn't go in to any whole in the wall stores yet, cause well, we haven't seen any. We didn't go into the smaller streets or anything. We're planning to go again before we head back to the states. So we'll check out the smaller stores then. Anyways! back to the task at hand. Any other places people recommend checking out in the Tokyo area? Doesn't have to be video game related. Thanks!

Sorry you couldn't find any deals, there's always next time.

I'd highly suggest you catch a train to Iidabashii (not Itabashii) and head to the Yasukuni shrine if you want to understand why all the other Asian countries hate it when Koizumi goes there. It's a pretty interesting museum for a multitude of reasons, and you'll be all the more knowledgeable for visiting it.

Plus, Iidabashii is a pretty chill place anyway. Nice little stores here and there (no game stores I believe).

Tokyo tower and Roppongi Hills are popular. TT for the sheer sights and RH for the, ahem, nitelife. RH is a little sketchy, but very interesting.
