So I'm lucky enough to have someone asking me which DS game I'd like them to pick up for me for Christmas and taking a look at the top scoring games I don't already have I narrowed it down to this list:

Megaman ZX DS
Yoshi's Island DS
Contact DS
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime DS [Square Enix]
Clubhouse Games DS [Nintendo]

I think I'm leaning towards either Mega Man or Yoshi, but Contact's premise intrigues me. The other two are also on my radar. I rarely ever link up with other DS owners and don't go on wifi, so I'm not sure how much I'd get out of Clubhouse games. Might be one that would be better to get down the road?

Interested to get any opinions from anyone that's played any of the titles.

One of the 'complaints' from the reviews I've seen on YI - that it doesn't add much on the SNES classic - isn't really a problem for me since I've never played that game.

I would say ZX based on pure fanboyism. I have yet to play it.

But in terms of a better game, I'd say go for Yoshi. I can't wait to play that as well.

I have all of them and my vote is for Yoshi's Island. Megaman is cool but the it seems to easy to get lost I just gave up on it after a few days, Contact is good but the battle system isn't good all you do for the most part is tell your character to fight and he pretty much does the rest, DQ is a good RPG and Clubhouse games fun too.

I haven't played any of them and don't have a DS, but I'm voting Yoshi's Island regardless. I loved the original (the best 2D platformer ever IMO) and the reviews said it's very similar.

Contact is pretty good...I don't really get the Earthbound comparisons other than the fact that they're both proud of their absurdity. IMO, Earthbound blows it out of the water and Contact isn't very funny, doesn't have great gameplay, or have memorable environments. However, it's pretty relaxing and is interesting. Maybe wait for a price drop if you're intrigued.

Megaman ZX is a fantastic game. Yes, you can get lost, but there are FAQ's for that and the gameplay is solid and more forgiving than in previous games.

Yoshi's Island for the SNES was awesome, this looks like more of the same. I haven't played it myself.

Rocket Slime is an amazingly fun game, but it's only 10 hours long so it might not be as fulfilling as other games.

Clubhouse Games is fun and the perfect game to have in your DS when you're not playing anything else.

All in all...get Megaman ZX if you already have a more conventional platformer like New Super Mario Bros. Get Yoshi's Island if you are in the mood for a traditional game. Get Clubhouse Games if you want a solid time killer that has so many classics that it'll be playable forever.

Oh, and get Elite Beat Agents if you don't already have it.

Thanks for all of the comments!

No wifi because I use WPA for the home network and when I tried playing around with it for an afternoon (switched the network to no encryption to test it out) I couldn't get the DS to connect. But I didn't really try terribly hard.

LAB - Elite Beat Agents is the last game I left off the list. :) I'm sure I'll pick up it as well as all 5 of these games eventually.

Sounds like YI might be what I'm looking for here, but more discussion is certainly welcome.

Though I haven’t played the others, I’d advise against Megaman ZX. The map system is broken. I purchased it, beat it, and then traded it back in again within a week. Though I’m a fan of the franchise and the gameplay is tight, I totally felt like the wonky map was more threatening than the robot bosses.

I have the same problem as well. I have to spend around 10 minutes fixing everything before I start playing, so I can't jump online whenever I want. At least the Wii supports WPA.

Oh, and I would like to change by choice to YI2. I had assumed that you played the first game (why haven't you?)

Dragon Quest is awesome. I just finished it. As for 10 hours, maybe if you rush through it. It took me I think 18 hours. Anyway its awesome.
Clubhouse games is alright, I was pretty dissapointed though.

I voted for all of them. All are great games, they just do different things well. If I were to wait on a game, DQ Heroes is it. It's a great game, but it's a short game.

Agreed.

Good game hampered by the shitty map system and no direction to the objective (other than "Go to J-1!!").

Yea, it's good if you use a FAQ, but that shouldn't be a requirement just to know where the fuck to go.

I got it, beat it, it's really nothing special, it's just laying the ground work for the inevitable sequel which will be alot better. I honestly see this one crashing into the next CC clearance sale.

Get Yoshi's Island 2. Amazing game. Pretty much feels just like an extension of the first one, and I really like the baby switching mechanic.

DQ: Rocket Slime is about 12 hours long, so I wouldn't call it "short" at all, it depends on how quick you play through games. It took me about a week and a half to beat it, but I loved every second of it. It's a tough call but I'd still go with Yoshi's Island 2 for the replayability of it.

My Mom loves Clubhouse Games and she dosen't even know what a wifi is, so you don't really need wifi to enjoy it. It's a good game to just relax with... kind of like a side game to accompany whatever else you're playing.

Rocket Slime should have more votes. That game is great.

I also own Yoshi and Contact, and recommend both of them. It just depends if you're interested in a platformer or an RPG-ish game (or in the case of Slime, a bit of both).

I bought Clubhouse for my girlfriend and she loves it.

accidently voted for YI, instead of MMZX, so factor that in.

YI2 is decent, but FAR too easy and boring when compared to the original, while MMZX is a decidingly fresh take on Megaman games, though it can be very hard at times, not to mention finding your way around various places can be confusing without a guide of some sorts.

YI 2 too easy, and Megaman ZX hard at times?

It's like I stepped into bizarro world.

Did you finish all the stages in YI 2 and do all of the bonus worlds? Did you 100% everything in the game? That's where the true challenge lies.

What's so bizzare? MMZX might be the easist of the MMZ series, but it's still a tough challenge. YI2, on the other hand, is an easy (and short) playthrough, and while there may be a challenge in hunting down everything, there's little reason to do so.

I would pick Yoshi's Island DS. I just cant put it down. I bought Final Fastasy 3 and elite beat agents on the same day. Maybe that should tell u something.

I voted for Mega Man ZX, since I played that with FF3 interchangibly on my plane flight the other day and was really happy with it. Personally, I'd take Yoshi because its the newest and probably going to be the last one to drop

Went with Yoshi's Island 2. Noticed buy.com has it for $30.28 (over $30) so gonna have her order it there and get it for about $25 incl. shipping. Not bad.

Thanks for all of the input!

Aw, does that mean we can't chime in anymore?

I've played Clubhouse Games and Rocket Slime. I have Contact and Megaman ZX, but haven't gotten to them yet.

Clubhouse Games is great.

Rocket Slime is amazing. Between that and Okami, this has been my best videogaming month in years.

I've put just shy of 20 hours into Rocket Slime and have one slime left to find. I love this game. The play mechanics are fun, the tank battles are terrific, and the whole game has a wonderful sense of humor, with truly great and dreadful puns everywhere.

I've had fun collecting monsters (who will fight for you in your tank) and items (for alchemy). The tank battles can be played a number of different ways, and even though I'm pretty close to finishing, there's a ton more that I can do.

Still not ready to take it out of the DS yet ;)
