Just a thought: if God was truly forgiving, wouldn't that mean that there would be no one in hell? God seems to require that you ask for it and/or follow a list of rules (recognize me as your one true god, believe in my son, etc). If people constantly said "I'll forgive you if..." we'd call them assholes that couldn't just let things go.
