Your biggest suprise this gen?

ico feels like jumpman (yes, JUMPMAN) with all the jumping and swinging around.... know what i'm sayin?
just without the bullet. haha

It's a toss up between Shadow the Hedgehog and Shining Force NEO. I was surprised that Sega managed to find new lows, after already raping several of my favorite franchises' corpses.

My biggest surprise was Guitar Hero. I was only kind of keeping an eye on it leading up to release, and now, a year later, I'm still playing it. Completely out of left field, and utterly fantastic.

My runner-up would be Katamari Damacy, for obvious reasons.

omg... this thread.... no one has mentioned....

ANIMAL CROSSING!!!

Goodness, gracious my carrots!

I mean seriously, this game was supposed to be an N64 game, yet it was released on the GC anyway. Somehow or another despite having inferior graphics and no *real* storyline, it became one of the most addictive games ever. I still wonder how my animals are doing from time to time even to this day.

The other big shock would be my gamecube dying... I've never had a system crap out on me before, and I definitely didn't expect the gamecube to die after only 2 and a half years. I still think the GC is a better built system than the xbox and ps2 though... I just got unlucky.

Metroid Prime 2 - While I would consider Metroid Prime one of my favorite games of all time, I was extremley dissapointed when I stopped playing the second one after two hours. I simply hated it.[/QUOTE]

Yikes! What's wrong with it? It's sitting on my "to play" pile 'cause I sold my Gamecube last year 'cause the Wii is backwards compatible.

Ditto, what's wrong with Shining Force NEO? I loved Shining Force 2, probably would have loved 3 had I had the chance to play it. I know NEO was sort of a regular RPG? I was really hoping it was going to be good, but actually I didn't even know it was out. I remember waiting for it to hit, and then...?

NEO is a painfully average Action RPG, whereas Shining Force 2 stands as one of my favorite Strategy games. Shining Force 3 was excellent. After how ambitious the three part SF3 was, and how good Shining the Holy Ark was on the Saturn, any lesser Shining game (read: all subsequent Shining games) are insults.

Darn :( Think it might still be worth a rental? I could add it to my Gamefly Queue I guess.

Industry Surprises:
-Microsoft enters the game industry-so far I think it's a detriment. They've hurt Nintendo (who I think would have had at least as much market share as Nintendo and Microsoft combined ended up with). They've also neglected the PC (while pretending they're not) which is hurting creativity in general-they've fragmented the market further, shown a complete disregard for older games, etc.

I do share your sentiment regarding Microsoft's entry into the hardware market to an extent, but if Microsoft hadn't entered the market, I think it's very possible that Nintendo wouldn't have gone with their current strategy in order to differentiate themselves from Sony and Microsoft. This need for differentiation has arguably led to the development of the DS and now the Wii. Without Microsoft's presence, who knows what Nintendo might be doing right now.

Interesting point! I hadn't thought of that.

Well, except...
I'm not sure the DS had much to do with Microsoft, and seemed to be more a reaction to the PSP. And so far I've found the touch screen to be a gimmick that at best I ignore, at worst am forced to use (I'd gladly trade it for an analog stick). Though I do like the dual screens-at least when they get utilized decently.

And the Wii...I'm not sold on it in terms of it being a better move than a traditional uber console. It hinges completely on that controller which may or may not be great. And Nintendo would have had a lot more money to spend IMO, as the Gamecube would have made them a ton too. :whistle2:(

It definately has to go to Beyond Good and Evil. This game had so many various game elements and the characters/story were superb. Just one of the few under the radar titles; Psychonauts, Oddworld Stranger, etc.

Beyond Good and Evil was a great game (I enjoyed it more than Zelda), but I can't call it a "surprise", because it got great reviews, and was just as good as the reviews said.

I guess the surprise is that it didn't sell. I'm not totally sure why (beyond the typical, it's not "Nascar Presents Roster Update Theft Auto 07")
