How soon we forget about HD-DVD
Ha ha, silly me. To be honest, I've actually never seen an HD-DVD before. By the time I eventually upgraded to an HD TV, I think Bluray was already the norm for most people. And even then, I didn't have a player until getting my PS3 a year later. And it wasn't even until several months after that when I finally decided to stop being stubborn and give it a try.

sounds exactly like me except i bought batman the dark knight with my blu ray but other than that your story is exactly like mine even after that movie i barely used the ps3 for a while too lol.

Sounds like my wife. She insisted she hated blus because she used to work at Best Buy, and seeing them play X-Men all day on TVs that weren't calibrated or set up right made them look weird and fakey, so she thought that's what they always looked like. I finally got her to give it another chance and now she wants to get everything on blu instead of DVD :V

On another note, I know I'm not the first person to bring this up, but I tried it and card sleeves + a soft cover binder is the absolute best way to store loose gameboy games.
Exhaust. But that's like the last exhaust on the chain so doesn't get too hot anyway - plus i closed it so not much gets through either way. It's not directly over anything too.
They also sell magnetic vent covers for like $5 at the Home Depot. It's probably not needed, but it's definitely an option.
LOL, I was just thinking this. I almost bought an Xbox HD DVD adapter the other day for 10 bucks.

Almost.
$10? :hot: I want to find one for $10.
Made my shelves more efficient - now I can fit maybe 50 more blus on there =]

GOOD GOD MAN SAVE THOSE LOOSE DISC PILES!!! Save them...

Been a very long while since I've posted. Thought I would show off my retro consoles. My current gen stuff is downstairs on my HDTV. Games are stored in Ikea boxes on shelves so they're not nearly as cool to look at.

Overall picture:

Closeup of left cabinet:

Atari 7800, Slim PS2, [Room for expansion :)]
Xbox (w/ XBMC), Sega CDX, Panasonic 3DO
NES toploader, SNES mini, N64 (Jungle Green), Gamecube with Gameboy Player
Wii, Sega Genesis (Gen 1) with Sega CD and 32X, Sega Saturn
60GB PS3, Sega Dreamcast, Atari Jaguar

Intellivision, Magnavox Odyssey2, Commodore VIC 20, Commodore 64

These are 'extra' consoles stored on another shelf:

Pikachu N64, Orange N64, Black Dreamcast, Toaster NES

One thing I'd like some advice on is putting the backing on the left shelf. Do you guys have any advice on the best way to put cord holes in it?
Invest in a larger TV next!
I think he is trying to really keep it old school, you need a 15" or 20" tv!

I've actually been trying to find a cheap flat CRT at yard sales around here, but none to be had. That's what I get for living in a comparatively rural area.

I don't think I've ever watched a blu-ray ever. I own a 42 inch 1080P TV also.

Being as I have the 2nd to best tier package with direct TV satellite, I never found use to start a movie collection. My receiver does 1080i so that's good enough for me.

Half the time I watch you guy posts movie collections either I just watched it or it's about to be on TV or it's on demand or I already recorded it. A lot of or's.

Also I don't know who can't tell the difference between blus and dvd whether the TV is calibrated or not. As long as the TV is set to play in the lowest HD resoultion you should be able to tell the difference if you're not color blind. Seriously my dad is legally blind in one eye and he can still tell the differece.

Movies are the one thing I'm happy I didn't get into collecting big time.

We have two old CRTs sitting in our basement that we can't get rid of (one is a old 32" TV and the other is a wide "flat screen" 24"). They're way too fucking big and heavy. And while moving one of them to the basement, my brother and I learned that it wasn't designed for being carried around because there was nothing to grab on to. Needless to say, it slipped out of our hands and the frame is broken in multiple places. fucking left us with quite a few cuts and bruises.

I really wanna take a bat to that thing.

I have a 32" (I think) "HD" widescreen CRT. It seems like it weighs 150 pounds. I have it in the extra bedroom now. It has a high pitched whine when it's on which makes me want to never use it. I'd get rid of it, but it's upstairs and I'm not carrying it out of the house .

Hole saw. 10 seconds and you can have a nice perfect hole on each shelf if you'd like.

10-hole-saw.jpg

Nice collection of consoles BTW :)

I was going to suggest that, but it seems excessive for a piece of cardboard. It might be better to just use a drafting compass and a sharp blade. Or be like me and just punch a hole through the mother fucker and call it a day.

Thanks for the responses guys.

wiggy, I knew that I could use a holesaw, but I was trying to do something a little more generic. If I decide later to move the shelves around, then my original holes might be in the wrong spot.

Am I just a little too OCD to just make holes in the backing and get it over with?

nope, i would be in the same situation. maybe im ocd too.

Good stuff everyone!

Hopefully I'll have a few pics up of my "32-year-old virgin chamber" a la Andy Stitzer in a few weeks.

Pre-emptive, yes, I do live with my parents (moved back in with them a year-and-a-half ago after taking a year off work and traveling Asia), so I'm not sure if I'm better off than him at the moment. LOL

I'm currently transitioning out of my current bedroom into a room above the garage so I should have it done sometime in mid-late March (before PAX East). (^_^)

I want to put my nes/snes/genesis/n64 games in some of those custom cases. I saw on Amazon someone suggest mediashelving.com who has them for $59 for 100. Is this site legit and is the price decent? Also if one of you would be so kind as to repost that site where you're getting the custom case artwork. Much appreciated guys.

This is the site I remember going to when someone suggested using UGC's. I haven't ordered from them but I'm pretty sure this is the one everyone orders from. As far as cover art I believe that this is the biggest site: The Cover Project. If you go to say N64 and then click a game it will have the cover art and then say case type. Which for example:Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense says: Universal Game Case. Hope this helps!

Those are the ones. Thanks! I read these cases were able to be "modified" for NES carts. Does that just mean you hack off some of the tabs, or were they made for this function?

Media Shelving is really the ONLY place to get them in that quantity for that price (shame, they were 42.00 a box until about a month ago). It's a stand up company. Also, pay the extra 3 bucks for the outer carton option. The box they come in from China is like toilet paper. I've ordered more than 10 cases and before they added the extra carton I would ALWAYS have a handful of broken cases. The last batch of 2 cartons came with the extra packaging and I had ZERO broken cases :)

Need to be cut up a bit :( But there's a fellow on TCP who's working on his own line of UGC-type cases that WILL accommodate NES games right out of the box.

https://www.seymoronion.com/Custom_Game_Cases/index.html

No idea on an ETA at the moment though :/

In the picture with all of the consoles, you can see some folded cardboard backing between the shelving unit and the wall. I assume he's referring to that...just in case you were wondering how I came to my conclusion. Heh.

On a completely irrelevant note: I just noticed the carpet in that room and me likey.

Ah, I missed that. Should have guesses though. That's pretty much the norm with media shelving.

That's pretty neat. It's a lot different than the other MGS Premium Editions that only Japan gets. I found the MGS2 one a few years back by complete luck. How much did you pay for it?

I actually bought my second Japanese CE in the Lollipop Chainsaw Valentine Edition... well two of them actually since I didn't have to pay much for them. My uncle in Japan randomly gets giftcards from vendors and he got some for Amazon Japan. He wasn't going to use them so he gave them to me and I ended up paying ~$30.

They won't ship games to the US so I had have the package sent to him and then he forwarded it me with the message "your games are on the way you dirty pervert". Guess he opened the package...

My basement is also an option for overflow.

lol which ones? they were way too big didnt want to scroll and all that.

but my parents have multiple copies of some movies for no reason either i know they have like 4 or copies of Ghost lol. ive got a few multiples for no reason. i have no idea why i have four copies of the first bloodrayne for instance

those are just some of the examples i remember but i am sure there are others. sometimes its a result of buying volume 1 then later buying the whole set so you get two copies of it. and in one weird case my dead like me season 1 came with all the discs but two copies of disc 1 lol

Something's up with CAG's image resizing thing. Pictures are supposed to automatically re-size to some resolution (not sure if it's a fixed number or if it depends on your computer's resolution) but it doesn't always work right. If you reload the page, it'll usually fixes the issue.

Those are only empty steel cases - you get them for pre-ordering the movie from Best Buy. So that just means he preordered multiples and may or may not have actually picked up the movie later ;)

it from the preorders, sold the extra copies to some of friends and kept the stellbook for all the "hard work".
sorry about the enlarged pic, i did it on my iphone.

Umm look them up on ebay, the cases recently sold for way more than the $7.50 each that was paid assuming even that much was paid since you could cancel the pre order get your money back and keep the case.

Looks like 15 bucks typically. Meh. I don't call that "way" more. I call that "not worth my time to even list the thing, let alone pack it up, put a label on it, and take it to the post office."

Plus, it's not like keeping them is gonna help. Movie media doesn't typically gain or even retain value.

But if you like em on your shelf, then I guess you like em on your shelf. Plenty of people don't like the whole UGC thing, but I quite obviously embrace it. I really just wondered why anyone would have 4 or more copies of something like that.
