so starting with the games....

"http://imgur.com/a/E3gDv Link1"

hopefully that is the right link....it goes from games to anime to non-anime

next is books and guides and the tv and systems...the box you see is a 20th anniversary ps4 that yes i have not even taken out of the shipping box for some unknown reason lol. i also have two of those zelda green books for some unknown reason....i blame square and his rightstuff sale postings....the second copy is somewhere else in another room just to clear space.

http://imgur.com/a/G1l6k Link 2"

now is boxes and special editions and finally some full shots of the shelves....if i ever move into a place where i can do just a game room then i'll display those better one of these days....but for now a closet will work. the boxes contain controllers and system cords. several special edition controls and of course 4 gamecube wavebirds. i have the wii u smash brothers gamestop gamecube controllers somewhere too. and of course the plush tachikomas....i've got a mass of stuff animals and nerf guns around somewhere. i only have the tachikomas out because i dont want those getting lost and buried.

i have some retro stuff you see on the box labels...there were nintendo stuff but my dumb mother decided to mail them to my brother even though it had my name on it so his 5 year old can go ruin them or his dumb wife can randomly throw them away. i'll have to check on that. no one told me any of this of course.

the last one is a sword from toledo spain....i have a few other weapons floating around.

this last one is a far away shot of everything

enjoy people.

EDIT:

i have no idea how the formatting got so screwed up. hopefully the links work for people

Nice collection. Not sure what's going on in the first few pics but the last link shows you games well enough.

What kind of shelves are those two big ones (to the left/right of the smaller one) in the first pic in the last link?

Thanks
I was trying to close up things to make them readable....and some just became blurry because bad angle and shaky hands

The shelves....I'll have to look as I don't recall

So it seems like I may finally be buying a condo (assuming my mortgage goes through ok) and will need to move in July... not looking forward to moving ~2000 documented games, another ~100 undocumented games, and 300 guides... among another ~200 other collectibles (mostly Transformers figures and comics from the early 2000s).

The sheer idea of packing/moving so much stuff is starting to stress me out more than actually buying a place.

Storage unit might make sense for you.

Not sure if vinny is still in the Chicago area, but storage units are expensive (usually $100+ a month for a tiny 5X5 temperature controlled unit). Since I can not rent my condo, I may keep it, winterize it and add some (more) storage shelves to use it as a storage unit. lol

Oh, it's not that time is an issue. 90% of my stuff is at my parents place and they don't plan to sell the place any time soon. The rest of my collection is at my apartment. I'm just talking about packing/moving all of that... seems like such a daunting task. Really don't trust movers with my collection either b/c it's mostly older stuff (PS2 era or before). Plus, I've got a tiny coupe, which doesn't help matters.

Yep, still am and yep, storage in Chicago is expensive (and sketchy).

I mostly meant temporarily. Pack up small boxes of stuff and slowly put them in storage. Gives you more room to organize everything else once you move too.

Moving collectibles is a nightmare. Moving from my apartment to the place I bought was a nightmare. I thought it would just take a day or two and took like an entire week to safely pack up stuff and get it over there. Then there was the extra room that was just full of all the yardsale left overs. I'm happy its over but I'm not sure if I could ever do it again. I thought I did pretty good dumping alot of the yardsale stuff on ebay before I moved but it wasn't even close to enough.

That didn't even include the video game collection that is all packed up at my parents house.

Also here is my Sega CD and Saturn collection ready for transportation from this weekend hah.

That's what I'm afraid of... I'm telling myself, 1 solid day to pack safely, move the next day and unpack slowly over time. But I know it's not gonna be that smooth. I've luckily found a way to safely transport my GB/GBC/GBA collection... not no idea how to transport my SCD/SAT games... those cases are likely gonna shatter if I don't wrap them individually.

I have 1 month from when my mortgage is supposed to close to when my apt lease expires.. that's something, I guess.

That sounded like so much time to me to lol. I would bring over a car load of stuff after work and do some stuff. Then it got to the final week and then the final 4 days and it was a crazy show.

I've gotten pretty good at sorting/packing stuff, just because I have always had hundreds of thousands of items.

I still love the battery boxes for temporary storage of media. Easy to stack and transport. Obviously I wouldn't use them for soft boxed or highly collectable stuff, but they are an easy way to move a DVD shelf of stuff while keeping them in order if you are moving the stuff yourself.

Priority flat rate boxes work well for guides, comics, books, etc. You can order them free from the USPS website and drop them off if you do not intend to use them. My PO is happy to get some of the oddball boxes b/c they are not allowed to order them.

As far as Saturn/Sega CD games go, I was working on what to do with them yesterday. I decided to line a dresser drawer and set them in there since I am scared I will somehow destroy them if they are in a box on a shelf.

LOL WAT? What kind of mansion do you live in to store that much stuff?!

The plastic longbox cases are such terrible designs. If they crack on the front/back, they look really bad... if they crack on the sides, there's a chance for hinge damage.

PS* Super jealous of that MM8 on the Saturn... I once missed a copy for $40 on eBay and now that game goes for like fucking $200+. Then again, as we were talking about it before, a lot of games seem like that recently.

Prices are crazy. I looked up last week what I paid for my mint copies of Gun-Bird 2 and Bangai-O for the dreamcast. IT was 17 shipped and 20 shipped. Now those are both like 80 bucks.

I have to think we have kind of reached the pinnacle of costs for some of these games. I can't imagine the Sega Saturn, CD and Dreamcast going much higher since I think interest will start dropping a little for it. How much higher can Albert Odyssey get?

I like slowdive's battery boxes. All of my games are stored in boxes labeled Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. They are great boxes that came back from my days working in a medical lab.

I have half of my parents basement and half of their garage, as well as my 1 bedroom condo. I sold on ebay since the 90s (when the WWW was new), so I have a lot of stuff (mostly new-old stock, like toys, comics, t-shirts,etc). I've cut down on my buying by 95% the past few years, so I've been purging anything that sells for less than $10 on amazon. I was hoping to open a shop for my Dad to run since he is retired, but I am not sure if that plan is feasible.

I got lucky with the mega man game. I was just happy to find a saturn in the wild. :) I was able to use google to find my original post: https://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/301207-2013-yard-sale-thread/?p=11014818

***OMG: I just noticed I didn't post the Mega Man game. It should have been the last pic! DOH! I always forget to post the best stuff. It was sitting in the folder with the other photos on photobucket.

Yeah that Maegaman was going for about $50 when I got it 3 years ago. I just checked the price today and was surprised. I can't see saturn games holding value especially if they have been reissued on newer systems.

Yeah, it's been frusting, seeing so many games I want go 3-4x the price they were literally a year or two ago... but I thought the values would drop with the digital age and more re-releases and whatnot... hasn't really happened that much. I was thinking I could get a copy of EB for $300 when it released on eShop and the prices instead went up.

I wouldn't even collect retro if I was just starting out today.  Even with a disposable income, I just wouldn't do it.

Didn't even know Dreamcast was getting pricey.  Just looked up Cannon Spike and Project Justice (two games I put in my DC often) and wow...ridiculous.

I probably overpaid for a lot of games in my retro collection but I can't think of a single one that's lost value. And damn, I just sold a space PJ a few months ago for $85 (which was the going rate a the time) the shit is going on here!?

Yeah these prices are crazy. It looks like it is only a few on DC though.  Luckily my retro collection is from garage sales/thrifts, so I haven't paid more than $5 for a game (most are about 50 cents to $1 on avg) -I can think of maybe 2 times I paid more than $5 for a game.

Skies of Arcadia, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Power Stone (2), MvC2 (which has always been a bit pricey), MoTW...crazy.

Why isn't Grandia II expensive in relation to those other games?  It's an RPG I absolutely loved, and I'm surprised it could be had for...well, a lot cheaper than the others I mentioned.

EDIT:  In today's market, I would pick up super cheap retro games if I didn't have any...I just wouldn't try and build a collection up anytime soon.  I still do find some great finds today, although it's definitely few and far between.

Like the Wind Waker/Metroid Prime combo pack.  I got it and a SMS console with games for like $30 a while back.  I already had WW and Prime separately; just got it because I thought it was cool.  And it's at a very silly price now.

With the exception of a few very nostalgic games I picked up after my dad passed, the only way I can really do retro game collection is through getting lucky at yard sales and flea markets. I've been very fortunate, however, that I've managed to find most of the stuff I want that way, plus some really new stuff (e.g. Drone Tactics on DS).

It's on PS2 in physical form as well, and PS3/PC digitally.
Feel like Grandia II never really had the following that Skies had, or that of the original game (which granted, isn't that valuable either). I didn't care for Grandia II that much. The battle system was more refined but story/characters lacked the charm the original had. And in comparing Skies to Grandia II is no contest to me, I consider Skies the definitive JRPG on the Dreamcast and of that era (including PS2/GC/XB in there as well).

In the meantime, I think I found a decent solution to transporting my guides. Our office has tons of these boxes for reams of paper... those seem very sturdy.

Those boxes for reams of paper are perfect for two rows of dvd sized cases. Plus, because of their intended use, they are sturdy as hell. I had stocks six deep for years in my attic and while the bottom boxes started to buckle a little, everything inside was fine. Plus they're easy to move with a handcart. And free is perfect.

Alright... that's good. Should help with guides and DVD sized games (PS2, GC, etc.).

Only problem is gonna be getting them from work to my place. fucking roads are blocked and shit due to construction.

I'm probably get a little *too* excited...but a Craigslist ad came up today for a garage sale this weekend (tonight-Saturday).

Says it's specifically a "gamers garage sale" and mentioned NES/SNES/Genny/PS1/PS2/handhelds/DC/more.  Hoping for something amazing...but I'll likely have to haggle for anything of interest.

EDIT:  Was pretty disappointing (for me).  Had nearly everything of value.  Could tell it was duplicates/spares of his collection.  I bought Crash Bandicoot 2 (PS1) for a decent price...prices were all over the place.  Some good and some not.

I have come to find that when sales specifically advertise like that, that 1 of 2 things is usually true: 1) You're not likely to find to many "deals" or 2) People go crazy and show up hours early and it's a scramble to get anything....or worse yet both.

I'm trying to figure out how to arrange my movie collection.  I know many here are OCD about having things alphabetical, but I like to keep all movies from certain directors in one spot, all TV series grouped together, music, animation, etc.  On the other hand I also prefer to keep the media type separated but that will be impossible because I have a huge mix of DVD, BLU and a few VHS.  I also store my PS3 games on the same shelves, I'm going to put them alphabetical despite the label differences.

What are your opinions?

I bought two Atlantic Media 837 towers for the living room and still ran out of room by a wide margin.  There is a lot of fluff I can get rid of, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

The game room stalled pretty much as soon as I moved into my new place.  Still have a random assortment of boxes sitting in corners and the tube TVs are still sitting in the garage waiting to be tested.  So much going on and so hard to get motivated.

I used to have a system, until the collection started to spiral out of control, so now it's just a select few collections that are still relatively minor, I just go with alphabetical for the most part.  I also organize them by how they look on the shelf.  For example, chipboard boxes will all stay together, might organize by publisher depending on the art design on the spines (matching logos), and so on.  When I was still able to keep up in the past, I used to do it by publisher, and alphabetical, so I would organize it to just publisher, and then alphabetize the titles within, but that plan failed after awhile once everything started to clutter up.

There's a scene in "American Splendor" where Harvey Pekar explains his method of organizing his huge record collection that some of us could relate to.

I just alphabetize everything and group by cases. So all my 360 cases are lined up, followed by imports, followed by purple Kinect cases, followed by 360 steelbooks/metalpaks, followed by SEs/tins/etc. I don't organize by spine (e.g. PS3). I understand why people do, but spine art seems chaotic to me to begin with, so the different logos don't jump out to me. Xbox One spines are so uniform, my method might change if they change, though.

I tend to go with whatever fits on the shelf. One oskar is all ps2, the other is all PS3 and blus, the other is only NES.

The only thing I separate from everything else are disney movies.

I think this is what I've relegated too... anything I purchased in the last year or two, I've basically stuck it where ever it fits.

Random question: does anyone have uncommon any "alternate" versions of games? I'm not talking about the first print copies that come with a CD/artbook or the Kmart bundled games (which I consider more of flawed copy... as they have that unsightly Kmart logo on the cover). I'm talking about things like how Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold got WM exclusive releases... or how WD games often came with diff disc art.

I have a few oddball Pokemon games that I don't really know the story behind. I just think they're neat from a collectors standpoint.

Never even heard of those... great, now I gotta track down a Xillia 2 with a manual.

EDIT* Seems like the Xillia 2 manual came with copies of the game from the CE?

I'm moving into a new house and have a blank wall to work with. I'd like to put up adjustable track shelving but can't seem to find exactly what I want.

Has anyone worked with this before or have recommendations? I plan on going floor to ceiling mostly with display stuff on top and all my games/movies on the wall.

However, I also have a closet available too that could be shelved. Would I be better to put some games and movies in the closet and use the wall for something else? The TV will be above fireplace.

Room in question: https://flic.kr/p/FQThqW

Also the few pics after that show various angles and the attached kitchenette.

Thoughts?

I don't have one of those but I think it would be awesome, with smaller shelves... so you can have different columns of different heights.

Honestly, most brands I've seen on here warp. Mine haven't, but it also costs more. Considering it's 3x 30" + 2x 24" across.

You can stagger the heights, but it'll cost a little more, and the width changes a little.

Would you mind divulging the cost and brand? I've got a bit of $$$ from hosting my own yardsale and selling on eBay to get rid of stuff before I move.

It's Elfa's from the container store. Total cost of 140" across, 9' ish height was in the neighborhood of $650.

I originally had about 40% of it at a previous residence, and expanded it when I moved to my current place.

I even got a couple of the shelves at scratch & dent prices, cause you couldn't see it anyways.

Edit: Some of the prices went up since I bought mine. It's $940 without discounts now, $750 with the 20% off sale they have annually. Probably about $50-100 more than I paid.
