That collection room = Holy fucking Shit! O_O

My wife would absolutely murder me. That guy should seriously start a museum to help pay for his addiction. I would definitely pay 10 bucks to look at all that :)

It actually does look like some kind of a professional collection. I doubt the picture is of an actual gamer's collection.

Wow, that collection is pretty awesome. My guess is the guy has a lot of expendable income.

I've been meaning to take an updated pic of my collection, but it seems like every week I order more stuff for it and don't want to take the pic til it all arrives.

Just do it, we haven't seen a collection in a while.

You need a wife like mine. Heh. Next house we buy, she promises that I'll get my own room that I can line with shelving like that. I was supposed to have that here, but I gave the gaming room up for my son because kids apparently like having a place to sleep and store their toys.

You could have just given him his own shelf =\

So, since there's a signicant picture deficiency on this page, here's a couple updated shots.

Sorry they're kinda dark. Used the phone, so I don't have any control over exposure times :/

Anywho, custom case N64 games are done and the SNES games are about 1/5-1/3 done. Made room for everything, but there's almost no room for any more expansion at this point. I think it'll be time for some new shelving come spring...
Or just get flash carts for your N64/SNES and put your originals in storage, or sell them. ;)
But what's the fun in that? :*(

Flash carts?! Bleh. Nothing pretty to look at, like putting disc games in a big-ass CD wallet or something. As a designer, I can't stand the thought of something like that. I've always gotta be making something like those custom covers in order to satiate my need for making things prettier :)

Make game artwork then =P

Never having to swap out cartridges, or make room and/or custom covers for them.

I've been using CD wallets since the Saturn/PlayStation days.
Contrary to popular belief on these forums, none of my discs have scratches (or even fingerprints, for that matter).
Both for convenience, and because I'm somewhat of a minimalist.

I would rather look at a bare wall than shelves full of games. Even my graded stuff is in closets.

To each his or her own. Personally, I can't deal with the abuse that CD wallets dish out :/ I had one for my "car music" like 10 years ago and it just scratched the snot outta my discs. After that, I swore them off forever.

I also just like to display them. I'm proud of my collection (like my wife is proud of her book collection). Displaying is like 50% of the fun for me ;) The other part is the work that's involved in order to play the older games. I WANT to fiddle with carts, I WANT to figure out how to keep 10 systems hooked up at all times, I WANT to design custom covers, I WANT to come up with creative solutions to storage problems, and other random game related stuff. That's what makes the authentic experience for me.

I hate the iPod because it made music completely disposable. Moving to flash carts would to the same to my opinion about classic games. I want a record, with a large 12x12 dust cover adorned with artwork. I want a fragile piece of media that requires the utmost care in order to remain playable, I want a piece of hardware that needs constant adjustment to do its job properly. These things all make what is "the experience" for me. Pushing a button or two in order to access an entire library is both overwhelming and magic-less. I wanna touch the games themselves, not just navigate through some juke box of infinite, illegitimately acquired titles.

Amen brother. I think that 99% of us in this thread agree with you. Nothing is better than going into a game store or somewhere, seeing a title that you missed out on as a kid, buying it, taking it home and putting it among all your other games. Then in your free time, you get to grab that cart or disc, put it in the system just like you would have during that generation, put the controller that the game was designed to work with in your hand and fire it up. Emulation is never going to give you the same experience for guys like us.

I had a bunch of pc games in a CD binder, and the top part of the sleve that folds in to allow the discs to go into the pocket scratched every single disc, about 200. Also my dog pooped on it, as well as my rock band drum set.

I had a decent CD collection, but to me it did become worthless with mp3s.. I'm hoping I don't see games the same way in a few years. I tend to appreciate carts more because of this, even with flash carts. Back in the day I enjoyed showing off my Genesis collection, but all my snes packaging got thrown away because it never seemed like a container

That seems doubtful. Sure you can get classic games illegally or get them legally on pretty much any device (even phones) and they often get re-released as much improved versions but most games still hold their value pretty well.

What does make a difference is having the original boxes/manuals. I own quite a few complete GB and GBC games and most of them are only worth a significant amount if they're complete.

My .02? I'm not interested in buying the same old games over and over again, no matter how many itsy-bitsy, irrelevant changes they make. I'm not ever gonna pay more than a couple of bucks to play a title that I already own on another platform. If I need to do something like that SO badly, then I'll emulate on the DC or Xbox phat, and if I need something portable to do the same, then I'll use my tired-ass PSP (lord knows it doesn't have any other good uses).

Did that, actually. He collects any bottles he finds around the house and puts them up there. Maybe he sees my toy collection up on the shelves and thinks of these as his own little trophies?

That's awesome! The wife and I are trying to have a little weeble of our own right now, and I'm so looking forward to that sort of thing (but not so much the poopy diapers and crying in the middle of the night LOL!).

Wow some people of some pretty crazy collections..

I may need one of those to mount to my wall. :3

I made it.

it is 48" tall 30" wide and 7.5" deep made it to fit behind the entry door in the room.

it is actually kinda sloppy the wood i had was warped so that is why the shelf look like the are sagging :(

Thought it looked like it was custom made.

I was going to do the same, but was hoping for a lazier solution, but oh well.

But yeah, unless the wood you get is good quality anyways, warping tends to happen in the end, so not a huge deal. ^__^

Warping won't happen if it's properly put together (no offense to GSR).

A little tiny bit of bracing would prevent this from happening.

You could do what I did once years ago... I just got some brackets, screwed them into the wall (into studs of course), then just stuck a normal media shelf on there. Then I use a few more brackets on top (so it doesn't fall over).

Outside of looking kinda bad (easily hidden if you creative though), it got the job done.

Diapers actually aren't nearly as bad as I expected. I went into this with absolutely no baby experience (aside from holding my sister once or twice when I was little) and I've done fine. Once they start eating "people food" the diapers will get pretty horrible, but you'll be used to the whole process by then. Crying all night is much, much worse. For the first two months, my son cried constantly at night and we couldn't get any sleep. But by the third month, he was sleeping through the night and has been ever since (he's now 18 months). Of course, now we're at the fun stage where he screams his head off if he doesn't get what he wants...which is usually something he's not allowed to have. The good times far outweigh the bad, though. Being a dad is probably one of the coolest things ever.

That's really awesome, man! Glad to hear you're digging being a dad :)

A LOT of my friends are having kids or already have one or two (I'm 33, so it makes perfect sense). It's a little tricky for my wife and myself though. Without going into all the personal details, we have to use in-vitro in order to have a weeble. So, it's gonna cost us a litte more money than the traditional method would, but we've got our ducks in a row at this point and are planning to start the process in the next few weeks! :D

Look on the bright side, since most of us already have a ton of games when your kids start asking for them you won't have to buy them any, they can just go to the gaming room and pick out something to play. If you want to buy the latest game or system, you can always make the excuse, oh I got this for my kid cause he wanted it. Plus you can play with cool toys like lego again and not look like a weirdo for playing with toys as an adult.

I still don't want kids, but these are just some of the many perks of having them.

I don't think I could handle kids touching my stuff... their hands are always dirty. Actually, not just kids but pretty much anyone who's not a collector. They just have different level of appreciation for things...

He said he was working with warped wood not that the wood had warped from having items shelved.

A little tiny bit of reading would prevent the mind from warping.

Found a temporary solution for more space (since I just bought a ton of stuff this past week), so once I'm done shifting things around, I shall update.

Sorry to hear that you guys are having trouble. We felt kinda guilty when my wife got pregnant because we know a few couples who have been having a lot of trouble getting pregnant (dealing with medical issues, miscarriages, etc.). They've been trying for over a year and it took us less than a month. We're both just really fertile, I guess. Heh. Anyway, I wish you two the best of luck. As much trouble as they can be, I think you'll love having a little munchkin running around the house.

Well, I'd still be playing with toys with or without a kid, but you're totally right about the games. He absolutely cannot touch them right now, but it'll be great when he's old enough to play. He's already got a few games of his own (Sesame Street and PooYoos) and I plan on eventually getting his own Wii that I can load full of ROMs for him so he can play all of the classics without me having to worry about my cartridges.

The stick up your butt: take it out.

That shelving looks like chip board to me. If you know anything about chip board, it's that it's about as soft as butter (i.e. flattening it back out with a brace even AFTER it's become warped will fix the problem).

Warped mind indeed...

BigLots sells Sauder media shelves, which are what I use. Walmart has Mainstays and another brand that slips my mind at the moment; they are of comparable quality and price.

Goodwill is a great place for shelves. I've gotten 3 6' shelves there for $18-$20 each.

You can order the Sauder ones from Walmart with site to store as well if he doesn't have a big lots around him, since they're a bit more rare than Walmart.

But yeah, Sauder ones have found a place in my collections heart with their well priced shelves. :3
