I don't know, Slowdive is probably a hoarder.

I have OCD, but I don't think that's why I collect. A lot of what I buy is because I want to support Atlus/XSeed/Aksys. I got rid of maybe 10% of my games recently.

We buy TV series because we need captions. We'd buy a lot less if all streaming services were captioned.

I don't know why I buy movies most of the time. I don't watch them. I used to rent them, and return them without watching them, which is what caused me to buy them cheaply instead. Remember when it used to be $3-4 to rent a movie? Remembering that, $5-7 blurays aren't that unreasonable.

I collect figures, but not in an OCD way. Mostly because they take too much room relative to media.

I do collect too many things now though, lol...

The reason I collect definitely has something to do with OCD. I always buy things because I can't stand to look at empty spaces on my shelves, so I keep buying things to fill it up, but then when I'm almost out of room I can't stand running out of room, so I buy/build/find more space to store the things I buy. And then it just keeps going around in an endless cycle. :*(

I don't have either of those, lol. I actually don't like clutter. Obviously, I also want things, so it doesn't work out well, and stresses me out.

I might switch a lot of things to digital if a) they were cheaper, b) movies were captioned, c) I can re-sell them, and d) I'm guaranteed to never lose access if I pay for it. Music doesn't meet c), but I've been buying digital songs now. Other than importing YUI CDs for $40, but that's another story.

I'd definitely get rid of most games and movies if those were a reality.

Can the Satellaview still do anything, or is it just for show?
 
Like hoarding, many, MANY people experience symptoms of OCD and ADHD, but clinical diagnosis is based on how disabling the symptoms are. Sure, I'm meticulous about organizing my games, but it doesn't keep me from living my life. People that have a clinical diagnosis of OCD are actually disabled by it. Same for ADHD, hoarding, clinical depression, etc.

Again, it's just a matter of how debilitating it is, not whether we collect garbage, games, furniture, or whatever.

I am a hoarder in medical terms, but not like on the TV show. I can part with things, I just have to find them. I don't keep food, or have pets, or generally keep anything that is dirty (I'll clean stuff up if I buy it). I hate bugs, so it will never get to that point.

I used to view it as building my empire, but to others I'm sure it looks like a cry for help.

interesting question though. are you collecting and doing it to point of insanity or not? i'd be curious to know where hoarding and collecting cross lines exactly.

only because hoarding is usually viewed as someone that collects actual trash too. and if buried alive reality tv is to be believed that usually includes bugs and urine and feces. so anybody that doesnt pile that up is usually not considered a hoarder in todays world. however i am sure quite a few of us are hoarders and have that mentality. and a bunch of us are probably shopping addicts but only in the realm of games and movies.

one thing i wouldnt mind seeing a show on as well that i know won't happen because we have demonized torrenting to a terrible horrible level where you would think these guys are killers even though it is a legal grey area at best. but my point here i'd also be curious to look at digital hoarders. people that have stock piles of digital data. ive known people that have terabytes of digital data stockpiled. i even have a few terabytes as well and that is after deleting a terabyte or two stuff that just gets copied over that i acquired in the 90s and still have and havent looked at lol. i just dont see it happening as pirating stuff is such a taboo public subject at this point. but to cover the topic of digital hoarding i would have to say we would have to openly without fear of 20 years in jail and a million dollar fine cover the topic of torrenting and pirating and bring it into the open. i would actually like to see such a topic.

this topic could also include porn and people that have endless amounts of porn on their harddrives. i have a friend that probably has 1 or 2 TB of porn saved. so i am sure it would be quite interesting to look at the entire topic of digital hoarding as well.

To go along with the whole "Are you OCD?", I recently bought a futon for my bedroom, and my friends helped me set it up, and when were done they said, "you aren't going to keep the box and instruction manual for this couch!?" They were shocked that I'd ever get rid of the original box and stuff for anything, even though I only keep that stuff with games/media/action figures etc.

Guilty as charged. Just opened up my burned DVD catalogue, which was updated in Oct 2009 (I had stopped using my desktop in Nov 2009). There's 235 DVDs and 813 CDs, so a little over 1 TB. About half of the CDs were burned to DVD to save physical space. I have another 300 GB on my laptop from the past 3 years. I forgot how much I have on my desktop, but I think it's another half TB.

Yeah, but I share a 2 bedroom, so I don't have a lot of room other than in my bedroom. But yeah, I have the entire basement and their living room filled of my parents house (and my bedroom). :oops:

I'm not judging, but you'd probably do better opening a thrift store.

I did see a real hoarder about 2 weeks back though. This guy was driving with his rear bumper maybe 2 inches off the ground in like an old Volvo sedan. When I looked inside, there were papers piled as high as the dash in both the back seat and front.

I've actually started nuking mp3's which I don't listen to anymore; for me anything over 50 DVDs, 100 CDs, and 200 video games is too much. It doesn't matter whether the content is digital or physical, when it gets to the point where I can't find things or don't have time to enjoy them all...it's time to trim back.

Coming from a family with OCD traits; I'd consider myself more of an obsessive purger...
 
As much as I love SNES RPGs, I think they are better left to emulators since their batteries are bound to die (and prove difficult to replace consistently).

On a side note, Secret of Mana is such an awesome game.

Those batteries last 10 years or more, easily. My copy of Zelda 1 still saves just fine. If its a concern, swap the battery before you start your next game and it'll be good for a long, long time. You can even solder in a holder in place of the the tabbed battery so you can change it (as if you'd need to change it more than once or twice ever) in a matter of seconds.

You can get all you want via the first page of a Google search without using torrents. I doubt Nintendo would let that fly if they had any legal footing. Some of these sites have been up for years and earn money.
 
With all this talk about hoarding and illegal downloading, let's steer the topic back on to people's collections and collection orientated discussion.

if you live in a country where you it is not illegal then downloading torrents is not quite the crime that you think it is. and different countries have different laws concerning the matter.

and in some countries like america cops just spying on civilians for no apparent reason is a clear violation of the 4th amendment. you cant search a house with probable cause or a warrant but you have to justify why you are watching citizens. granted we ignore the consitution constantly so i expect this argument to be laughed at.

not to mention i could be uploading a torrent and sharing it with family something is not copy righted. also it is far easier to download a copy of a movie i own rather than break the protections and get it off the CD and you are allowed to own a legal copy of something you actually do own.

and let me ask this....what is the difference if i have cable and downloading a show on tv vs watching it on tv i still paid for it.

see plenty of grey area. and there is finnally of course the internet and computers in general were based on and created on the concept of free shareware. without free shareware computers would of failed miserably.

I never knew that (only had a snes for 2 years when i little). Why were batteries needed to save in the days of the SNES And NES?

My assumption is that the battery is needed to power whatever hard drive like memory the cart has in it.

I've always wondered why the batteries in NES and SNES games look after 10/20 years but the ones in the Pokemon games die so quickly (Silver/Gold and Ruby/Sapphire seem to be the most common games I see with "dry battery" listed).

I would guess it's just because Pokémon games get saved FAR more often on average than most old NES/SNES titles. Not sure if that's actually the case, but that's the only thing that I can think of :/

The Pokemon games you mention keep track of time so they are always slowly sapping battery life even when they are not in use.
 
So are ALL battery backups (using a little power all the time), that's why they eventually die. Actually, the only time that battery backups in cart games aren't using power is when they are in use.
 
Remember kids: Hold the rest button when powering down. I used to have a glitch on my Adventure of Link save. He would kill any enemy with 1 hit (it only worked with the sword though). I didn't use a game genie or anything. I still never finished the game because I would always die on the last dungeon...stupid invisible holes in the floor.

I'd definitely say that's part of it. It may also be worth noting that the battery is a bit smaller.

It's not too hard at all. Just two solder points. The way to go is the holder versus a replacement tabbed battery. You can just slip in a new battery after installing one just like you would the backup on the Saturn :D
