This gets worse and worse....The whole point of a ranking is to assess quality. Places like the USNWR evaluate schools using: peer ranking of school (0-5), avg. SAT, retention rate, full time faculty, etc, etc, etc. Yes, to a degree some schools get higher placement then they should, but for the most part the rankings are rediculously accurate.

Would you accept? lol The rich schools even if they drop really bad in areas can still pay people off and stay at the top. It's that easy. Ohhh here is another $20 billion donation. ;) Thanks for all the hard work in ranking us.

Personaly, I think it is as accurate as the donations they pay the people that are ranking. Basicly the rich stay at top. Just look at the ranking and see who donated more money even though the donation amount doesn't equal quality.

Harvard as far as I know has the highest endowment at just under $30 Billion. I doubt they pay that much for a ranking. In case you didnt know, they dropped from #1 to #2. Princeton leaped them. I'm sure Harvard frankly didnt give a shit.

When you get a job after college, after a couple months ask your employer if they looked at what college you went to, ask them what college and if it made a difference. :cold:

As I said, occasionally simply where you went to college can get you a job. Obviously, not in every case does it play a role as to whether or not you get the job...

They're all about the same in terms of how outstanding they are. They change the order every year just so people will keep buying the rankings :p
 
Rankings do matter, for better or worse. A degree from Chico State is not viewed as the same as a degree from Harvard especially when considering entrance into graduate schools or advanced professional degrees like medical school or law school. People perhaps may over-emphasize them (I admit, I was one of those when I was in high school) but it definitely gives you an initial advantage to go to an "elite" school. However, you can get a fine education at any university, it's just matter of having the self-discipline and self-motivation to take advantage of what your school as to offer.

As to how they rank, these schools do not "pay" for high rankings (at least in rankings from credible sources). Perhaps they are skewed in that they take into account certain factors like endowment and percentage of alumni that donate which really shouldn't have as much of a factor but as a whole they are fairly unbiased.

BTW, Harvard has well more than $30 million in endownment. It's at least $20 billion if I recall correctly. They raise over $1 million dollars a day in donations on average.

Interestingly, though, both Harvard and Princeton are shaking in their boots these days on the endowment front. Both schools have huge donors who are pulling (or trying to pull) their gifts. Harvard is losing a lot because rich friends of Larry Summers are pissed that he got the axe, while one of Princeton's biggest donors (a terribly famous name that I don't remember offhand) is trying to pull it on account of misuse in the Woodrow Wilson school.

It's Robertson. Summers went to my rival high school. He went there with my neighbor. He's a local guy.
