Well, after playing a lot of Sega Genesis Collection for PSP, it reminded me of how much I loved Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2. I'm constantly seeing mixed opinions as to what peoples' favorite Sonic game is, so I thought I'd start a thread about it.

My favorite would be:
1. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (GEN)
2. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (GEN)
3. Sonic The Hedgehog (GEN)
4. Sonic CD
5. Sonic & Knuckles
6. Sonic Rush
7. Sonic Advance
8. Sonic Advance 3
9. Sonic Chaos (GG)
10. Sonic The Hedgehog (GG)

Sonic 2 (GEN) is my favorite because I really like the stages, and I find myself going back to play it the most. It also has my favorite bonus stages in the series.

So, what's your favorite Sonic game?

Tough one, but my favorites are in this order:

1. Sonic Adventure 1/2
2. Sonic 2
3. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
4. Sonic 1
5. Sonic Chaos
6. Sonic CD
7. Sonic Advance 2
8+ Anthing I didn't list.

I picked Sonic and Knuckles, but I agree with willardhaven that Sonic 3 and Knuckles is really the best. Sonic 3 would be a close second.

I bought Mega Collection Plus just for it... now I need Genesis Collection and I'll never need to break out my Genesis.

If only Earthworm Jim would come out for PS2.
There is no option for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the greatest Sonic game in history.
QFT This is why so many people are upset with Sonic Team - I mean they made this, and then what?
There is no option for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the greatest Sonic game in history.
Sonic 2 and the Sonic 3 & Knuckles tie-in are soooo close in my book to pure Sonic goodness, that it's hard to choose. I think Sonic 2 just barely wins though.

Sonic Rush is by far the best Sonic game not on the Genesis. Sonic CD gets my vote or most confusingly praised Sonic game ever. I don't understand the appeal of that game at all, even when put up next to Sonic 1 on the Genesis.

Sonic and Knuckles was awesome, I remember it was such a big deal they sold it at the grocery store. Although the Sega CD Sonic had one of the best intros evar next to Soul Blade.

Sonic AND Knuckles...

Sonic 3..

It's hard to decide

I THINK Sonic 3, just for the great levels..I mean every single level in that game is just the best..the angel island is the best FIRST LEVEL ever...absolutely huge and intimidating more than any other Sonic level..

Ice cap zone..marble garden...hydrocity, just GREAT LEVELS!!!

Why is there not an option for Sonic 3 & Knuckles?!

S3&K isn't just my favorite Sonic game, it's also my Favorite game, PERIOD. Everything about it was 2-D perfection. Even to this day, I find myself running through it, 100%-ing Sonic, Tails, Knuckes and even Sonic AND Tails.

I love and have mastered just about every Sonic game out there (YES, even Shadow the Hedgehog!), but I gotta agree that my favorite was probably the Sonic 3 & Knuckles combo.

Back in the day, the lock-on cartridge was the most incredible thing my childish mind could ever imagine. Play as NEW characters in your OLD games!? Brilliant.
The fact that you could even play as Knux in Sonic 2 was such a cool bonus.

I remember playing the hell out of those games back on Genesis and getting every chaos/super emerald with every character and having so much fun tearing up the levels as Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Hyper Tails.

If only SEGA could get a 3D game to feel like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, they'd surely win back all the fans they've lost over the years..

Yeah, Sonic CD, no contest at all. It's all been downhill after that.
Random list:

-Sonic CD
-Sonic 1 and 2
-Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast version-the GC version never felt right to me).
-Sonic Advance 1
-Sonic NGPC, Adventure 2, etc.
-everything else...except going by the demo, the new Playstation 3/360 version is the worst yet so deserves special mention.

This is tough to say for sure. Just out of default, I've probably played more of the original than any other game (nothing screams nostalgic Genesis trip more than the original).

That being said, my top 3 are probably

1) Sonic 3
2) Sonic CD (amazing music)
3) Sonic 1

Man, this is making me want to rip the Hedgehog out for a go-around.

That reminds me-I'd love a rerelease of Sonic CD that includes both the American and Japanese music. Supposedly the Japanese music was way better (so tons of reviews at the time said), but the American music was awesome. Just redo it on the PS3 with crazy 100's of MB of 2D art :D

I never had more fun with a Sonic game then I did with the first one. I played that one constantly (and it's fun reliving now on the Genesis Collection disc).

Sonic 2, I got it with my Genesis and played the hell out of it. None of the other Sonic games really held my attantion like that one did.
The first Sonic Adventure was awesome. I go for that one. The 2D Sonic games just seem so slow in comparison.
Ditto. I absolutely loved the first Sonic Adventure. I just played it again about a month ago also and surprisingly it still holds up pretty well. It's ten times better than any of the 3d Sonic and Shadow crap they are putting out now.

I'll agree with you there. I think the biggest problem any other 3-D Sonic game (as well as the Sonic Advance games) was the over-reliance on cheap botomless pitfalls. That and restricting Sonic to a side character. Seriously, the game is called Sonic Adventure (or Heroes), people buy it to play as Sonic, not some retarded rabbit named Cream.

What made S3&K so awesome was all the different options you had to go through a stage, all the hidden areas to find, and all the variety in the stages. Not to mention an awesome story that didn't feature horrible voice acting or writing.
yeah, not fair since sonic chaos is not up...........but i'll take sonic and knuckles
Actually, I said Sonic (Game Gear) which meant any Sonic game on Game Gear, such as Sonic Chaos, I liked Sonic Chaos too, but figured I should group all the Game Gear ones together (I knew there were many people didn't play, so I grouped them together). I only have 10 poll options unfortunately. :(

Sonic 1 and 2 hands down. I still remember the first time I played Sonic 1 minutes after opening the brand new Genesis that my uncle bought me.

I totally forgot about Sonic Chaos. I miss the Game Gear. I should play Sonic Adventure again, I didn't finish it the first time.

I'd have to go with Sonic CD. The replay ability was really good on it. Not to mention all the secrets that lay inside after the cheat codes...
