is ys 1 and 2 just a port of the Ds game..

No. A thousand times no.
The DS is a very, VERY shitty port of Ys 1 and 2 that was not handled by Falcom at all. Falcom gave it to a company called Interchannel to do it, and imo (I just played through it recently) and a few other Ys fans opinions, they

ed it up.
First off, they have the ugliest 3D I've ever seen on the DS, and the 2D characters on the garish 3D look atrocious. They changed the leveling system so it's broken. They added in some new area to Ys 1 which is just unnecessary and breaks the flow of the game. They also changed the combat system from the original, and while it works, there are times its pretty crappy.
Atlus also butchered the translation... you visit the Temple of Salmon, instead of Solomon. One guys name is Dr Fleah instead of Dr Flair. Little things like that.
Ys 1 and 2 for PSP was made by Falcom themselves, and is going to be the true definitive version of the game. It is definitely worth picking up over the DS one, and you'd really be doing the series a disservice by not getting the PSP version because you have the DS one.
Is this game a good place to start with the Ys series? I wanted to pick up Ys 1&2 for the turbo CD, but I have yet to find one of those and the system at a garage sale.
Do you have a Wii? They are both on there for $8 (or $9) as a package.
The Ys games are made so that you can jump in at anytime... it usually always starts with Adol drifting off to someplace new and doesn't really reference previous games too often. The only direct sequel the series has seen is Ys 2, which is why they get bundled together.
