A “Halo 3” for Everyone: Three Editions of 2007’s Most Anticipated Video Game Are Coming This Fall

First details emerge, including the ultra-collectible Legendary Edition, complete with documentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, developer commentaries, rare art and more.

Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie Studios today confirmed the first exciting details of the three editions of this year’s most anticipated video game release, “Halo® 3.” Gamers will have their choice of Standard Edition, Limited Edition and the ultimate collector’s item, the Legendary Edition.

The Legendary Edition ($129.99 U.S. ERP*) will be released in limited quantities and arrive in a highly collectible Spartan helmet case that no hardcore “Halo” fan should be without, along with two bonus disks full of supplemental content. The first disk will provide exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage and videos, including a high-definition “Making of ‘Halo 3’” documentary showcasing the Bungie team and its effort to create the most anticipated title in the industry’s history; numerous high-definition featurettes documenting the creative design processes involved in developing the game; and even a look at some early game concepts and their evolution through the game’s development. The disk will also include an audio-visual calibration tool, never before seen on a video game and custom designed by the “Halo 3” graphics and audio team to make the most of fans’ high-definition home theaters, for the ultimate “Halo 3” and Xbox 360™ audio and video performance.

The second bonus disk, an exclusive to the Legendary Edition, will include completely remastered cinematic material from “Halo: Combat Evolved” and “Halo 2,” supplemented with developer commentaries, to provide a refresher course on the thrilling “Halo” story so far, and a featurette documenting a day in the life at Bungie. Exclusive content from the creative minds behind Machinima artists “Red vs. Blue” and “This Spartan Life” will also be included.

Finally, fans who purchase the Legendary Edition will receive an illuminating collection of original “Halo 3” storyboard art from artist Lee Wilson, depicting key moments and pivotal scenes from the epic cinematic production of “Halo.”

The Limited Edition ($69.99 U.S. ERP*) will also include a bounty of extras. Within a sleek metal collector’s case, gamers will also receive the first bonus disk found in the Legendary Edition, as well as a special “Halo” fiction and art book. A must-have for “Halo” collectors and a source of invaluable and exclusive information, the piece is an elaborate and compelling guide to the species and factions that inhabit the worlds of the “Halo” universe, with never-before-seen art and story elements that expand and illustrate the depth and breadth of the “Halo” fiction.

And for those who crave nothing more than the highly anticipated third chapter to one of the greatest gaming trilogies, the Standard Edition ($59.99 U.S. ERP*) will consist of the “Halo 3” game.

“Halo 3” represents the third chapter in the “Halo” trilogy, a Marvel Entertainment Inc. graphic novel series, apparel and more.

I think the Limited Edition is the one for me, although I would have loved to have all the cutscenes, since I enjoyed them from the games. The helmet is just too much, and too expensive for me.

HOLY CRAP! $130 for the legendary edition???

I think it will be Limited Edition for me... I would like the bonus disk, but I don't want to pay another $60 for it, when I could just get another game.

I just noticed that for Legendary Edition, Teamxbox.com lists it as $99 but Bungie has it at $129.99....if its $129 I might just go for regular.

I'll just get the standard edition since I'm not that big of a Halo fan. Besides that LE tin looks just as bad as the Prey LE tin.

fuck that. There is no way I'm paying $130 for that. And if I don't go Legendary I'm going standard. I don't want the semi-fluffy LE.

Gamestop just called me via their little automated system and let me know that my preorder for the Legendary Edition is now $129.99, and if I wanted to change it, I should go to the store that I did the pre-order at and have them change the pre-order.

I was thinking about it when it was $99.99, but damn, $129.99? WTF?

eBay collection whores, this one's for you.

That was my initial thought as well but I think it'll end up being a PS3-like situation where it spikes temporarily but in the long run doesn't really sell for dick.

All depends on how really "limited" it is. The LE for Halo 2 was about as limited as Halo 2 was. If it's really "limited", then the collectors might go nuts for it.

I hope for the LE of Halo 3, they do it like Splinter Cell CE, with the two discs on seperate holders, not stacked together on a single spindle.

I was on the fence for $100, since I wish the helmet would hold all 3 games.
Thanks for kicking me off and saving me $$$.

wait dont forget..

Due to the unusal size and weight of this product an extra $10 shipping and handling fee will be applied to all orders.
Maybe they bumped the helmet up to life-size?
Exactly what I was thinking!! .......Walkin down the street, headbuttn' foos......

The official suggested retail price of the Halo 3 Legendary Edition was released this morning by Microsoft. Prepare for some sticker shock. Previously thought to cost $99.99, the limited release will in fact set you back $129.99. At more than twice the cost of the regular edition, still slated at a $59.99 price, the Legendary Edition is truly for the hardcore fans.

New details have also emerged surrounding exactly what the Legendary Edition will include. The previously announced Spartan helmet case is still in alongside two bonus disks of extra content. The first disk holds behind-the-scenes footage including a high-definition documentary titled "Making of Halo 3." This disk will also include an audio-video calibration tool designed by Bungie to help gamers get the most out of their home theater systems. The second disk will house remastered cinematics from Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 with new developer commentary as well as a featurette documenting life at Bungie. Last, but not least, the Legendary Edition will come wit ha set of Halo 3 storyboard art from Lee Wilson.

If $129.99 seems pricey for that set of schwag, the more modestly priced Limited Edition may be for you. This release comes at a suggested retail price of $69.99 and is similar to what you'd expect out of most collectors' editions. The first bonus disk found in the Legendary Edition (that being the one with the "Making of Halo 3" documentary) will be included in this release as well as a Halo fiction and art book. It all comes in a metal collector's case that won't elicit nearly as much jealousy as the Spartan helmet case found in the Legendary Edition.

Of course, you'll want to purchase all three versions of Halo 3 if you're a real fan. It's only $270. No big deal.

With that... Regular Edition for me.

Hopefully they mass produce this causing it to drop in price just like how FFXII CE is still available and selling $10 under MSRP. $100 was an acceptable price, $130 is making me seriously consider not buying it.

Edit - fuck it. $60 for a plastic helmet is so not worth it.

Apparently if you're a nut and want all the extras, you'll have to pick up both the Legendary & Collector's Editions. Seems that the Collector's Edition has stuff that isn't included in the Legendary Edition.

The Standard Edition will include $59.99 and just include the Halo 3 game.
According to Microsoft, to absolutely have everything Halo 3 you'll need to purchase both the Legendary and Limited Edition versions of Halo 3, since the Legendary version does not include the Art Book found in the Limited Edition package. Don't worry, it'll only run you $200.
Also, we find it kind of odd that Bungie isn't including their calibration tool with all three versions. What, only people that plunk down $130 for the Legendary version deserve to have Bungie's game looking the best it can? Seems a little rediculous to us.

Whoa, my wife was giving me a hard time over $100 for the legendary edition what will she say when I tell her its $130 now.

Thanks for definitively ending those lingering temptations I had to overspend on one fucking game, Bungie and Microsoft. Limited Edition for me.

Now just don't compound this by rushing the game out the door without that final coat for that September release. I was expecting November all along, as were many others, so we won't hold it against you if it happens.

3 editions........................................................................................................................................................................................DAMN!

The Legendary Edition box looks clean, but fuckit for $130. The Collector's looks GOW-esque as well. If it's not like Halo 2's Collector's Edition, I'm going for the regular.

I'll be buying the standard version... who needs all that extra shit? $60 is expensive enough - are we not cheapasses?
If the helmet was wearable, I'd do the $130.
Yes. That would sell me on the product completely.

I've got a feeling that the artbook, etc. will be added to the Legendary edition. Maybe even toss in a free map or skin exclusive to that edition.

Bungie just posted their weekly update which addresses some of the confusion involving the Legendary vs. Limited Edition content.

Frankie says:

"The other froth was caused by the revelation that the Limited Edition would contain one piece of content that isn’t in the Legendary Edition. Well, don’t worry about that at all. The Legendary Edition purchasers will be pleased to know that they will not have to live without that content at all. More on that later (some of the details are still being worked out), but it should be smiles and sunshine. Seriously."

Good news!

That's the hope.

Good news!
I can't imagine that Bungie/Microsoft would be so dense as to stiff people twice on the Leg Ed of Halo 3, once on the price and once on the adds in the LE that aren't present in the Leg Ed.

Hopefully, it'll be the Leg Ed that gets everything.

LOL wow they're really trying to suck all the cash they can through Halo now... that's just sad. Honestly for 130 bucks you can buy a PS2 and a few games...man anyone who buys that either is completely loaded or has no ...er...money sense at all.

Even 100$ is absurd actually...a freaking little helmet thing wth would I do with it...can't believe people even consider it. But I'm also a student with no cash so maybe thats why I think so diff. lol
