i am looking for a good RPG to play since i recently finished Final Fantasy:Crisis Core(which was amazing btw)
anyways i limited it down to Star Ocean: Till the end of time or Suikoden 5
and i am really not sure which to buy

thanks

Well I've played though both, and Suikoden 5 was by far my favorite of the two. Slow first 10 hours, but then suddenly the story gets awesome and stays that way.

Suikoden V took forever to get going and even when it did, I didn't like it that much, but Star Ocean 3's one of the worst RPGs I've ever played. So, S5.

That is Star Ocean Till then End of Time. I don't care if you aren't a fan of the comic. I played the game and the first bit is exactly that. Keep away, or play Star Ocean 2.

Only Suikoden I played was the first, but it was pretty damn good. Assuming they haven't changed things drastically go with that.
LMFAO nice comic hahah
anyways thanks guys looks like i will be getting Suikoden 5
thanks again for all your input ^_^

The first ~15 hours of Suikoden 5 were kinda slow. Once you get past that it becomes really good. This was probably one of my favorite games of the PS2.
Grandia 3 has my vote for sure, very underapted
Way to showcase those reading comprehension skills. :applause:

I just have to get the word out at how good Grandia 3 is ;)

Hmmmm What about comparing star ocean 3 to Suikoden 3? Sorry, about being sort of off-topic since I think the OP's question has been answered

Star Ocean: Till The End of Time. Suikoden V is good, but Star Ocean 3 is one of the greatest games last gen. Truly a memorable, one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Definitely play through that over Suikoden V IMO.

SO3 is pretty good despite the slow first 2-3 hours, the fact that people are telling you the first 15 hours of Suikoden V are slow... that's kind of a red flag for me.

I have yet to play Suikoden V so please try it for yourself.

I enjoyed SO3, the Item Creation System was awesome.

I'd get Suikoden V first though, also be ready for lots of random encounters and load screens >_>

Suikoden III was booorrrriiiiinnnngggg. But if you had to choose one, it'd still be Suikoden III. Star Ocean 3 is one of the worst RPGs on the system.

But either way, TMK, post your Star Ocean 3 review, plz.

I was really disappointed with SO3. The story was okay up to the 1st half, then completely went downhill towards the 2nd half. Plus, I think they took away the fun out of the cooking part of the game. Yeah, the best alchemy made the game cheap and easy, but it wasn't the same as SO2.

I'd vote for Suikoden 5. I was very satisfied with it. Plus, I was surprised to learn some of the minor stars from Suikoden 2 plays a big role in Suikoden 5. very enjoyable. :)

Were we playing the same game? I was totally bored by Star Ocean 3's story and it's one of those rpgs where if you stop playing it for one day you're not going to remember what you have to do next. (I got to the part where the main character discovers his past and then I got lost and didn't feel like looking through the guide anymore). I have the brady guide and it still took me some time to figure out how to get around the worlds.

The combat isn't as bad as the penny arcade comic, though battles can be tough. It's a game where sticking to one team and levelling up is probably best. Grandia is was more fun than Star Ocean.

Star Ocean was pretty boring for me. I had to run around to map the area everyone for a 100% complete and I got a dorky item that makes me slightly faster.
I'm confused what's the best out of Grandia 3, SO 3 and Suikoden 3
Story - Suikoden 3
Gameplay - Grandia 3
Nothing - Star Ocean 3

Not listed but Grandia 2 is better than the game you mentioned.

So Grandia 2 is the best out of all 3?

i m in the market for ps2 games as well i completely overhauled my collection. i am going to game stop tomarrow, i am definately getting beyond good & evil, but i wanted to get an rpg aswell, i narrowed it down to Radiata Stores( How did you think it was Leaf) or Star Ocean End of time. i may get just beyond good and evil.

Radiata..... You might not like it. It was okay. Until I couldn't stand something about it. It may have been bad humor, bad writing, bad slow battle system. Its good for how much money it costs. But I can't compare it to SO 3 because I haven't played it.

Well Radiata Stories is very hit or miss with people. The game is short and focuses on fetch quests for the 175ish possibly party members. The battles are slow but somewhat similar to Star Ocean's. The most impressive thing in RS is the daily schedules of the characters. Each character will go through his or her daily routine while the games 24-hour clock ticks (the clock is obviously abbreviated).

If you want something colorful, short and creative go with RS.

Star Ocean is longer and more traditional. It plays like a Tales game and has relatively fast-paced battles compared to RS. Just like RS this game seems to be hit or miss as well. The item/weapon creation system is what most fans really like about SO3.

If you had to chose between all of the Tri-Ace games on PS2, I would probably recommend Valkyrie Profile Silmeria since it's the most well-liked.

Beyond Good & Evil is short and universally appraised. I think it's a decent game despite some spotty controls.

Well beyond good and evil is 5.99 and i plan on getting tales of legendia and abyss off of goozex, so ill want something similar to those two, for 16.49 out the door is it a good deal for star ocean and beyond good and evil?

Star Ocean..... It took you to the end of time to beat lol but it wasnt that star ocean was long it was that it was damn right boring. the story was strenched out to far, if it was cut down a lil it would of been better.

SO3 is the worst game i've ever played. i cannot believe ppl actually enjoy the item creation system for this game. 99% of the items created are completely useless (ugly lump of metal, stale bread, one eyed doll, etc). to create any of the useful items, you have to get the price to fall into specific range and then sit there while the characters icons change to indicate whether the item was created successfully. it takes an incredible amount of patience and time to deal w/ this even w/ a guide.

the game also sees a huge increase in difficulty some time into the second disk. when you get there, you're stranded and won't be able to buy items causing you a massive headache.

also, when you get a new character late in the game, they start at level one. if you want to use the new character, you'll have to spend quite some time leveling them to be of any use.

the story is midly interesting but i was personally disapointed by the "twist".

fwiw, i highly recommend staying the f away from this game. i'm about 70 hrs into and i'm not sure if i can bring myself to finish the game.

I couldn't get into S03 at all. Having loved the shit out of SO2, I was pretty disappointed. I put between 20-30 hours into Grandia III before tiring of it and trading it in. Suikoden III was the only game out of those three that I finished, and I really enjoyed it. The story's enjoyable, and I thought having the different parties prevented the combat from getting stale (like I found the combat in Grandia to be).

Suikoden V was a huge disappoint for me. It's one of the worst-looking PS2 games I've seen, and a huge step back from the way III looked. I'm not a graphics whore by any stretch of the imagination, but they're so bad that I couldn't think about anything else when playing the game. Not only that, but the environments are so boring that it's just painful to look at. I've heard it's supposed to have a good story but I couldn't force myself through it.

Wow lot of hate for SO3. Some rebuttal for SO3:

1. You don't have to waste time with item creation
2. You don't have to get 100% map completions
3. You don't have to fight every enemy. Just keep running until the final boss
4. No point on trying to level up every character

I can't wait for SO4 :)

Unfortunately you DO have to play the game. That's where the problem lies.

I really wanted to like Star Ocean 3, but couldn't get into it. The battle system blows, I couldn't get used to it. I thought I was crazy cause everyone else I knew was loving it. Suikoden V wins.

And someone mentioned Grandia 3. I'd stay away from that one. Besides the kick ass battles system the games suffers from a boring story and uninteresting characters. It starts off pretty good but lost me about halfway.
