WHy do people not use headsets on PSN

quite annoying I might add too.. I love talking to people online. Except all of thoses annoying kids talking smack. But when I play people on UT3 no one ever uses there headset. Just wondering why people don't use headsets.

Because most of them don't own them. That would be my guess.
Kind of obvious, really. Sony should be packing a headset in with the console. Even Cheapy has mentioned this several times (on the latest podcast too, actually).

I like having the option to communicate, but I rarely use it. Most of the people playing on Live are asshats who I'd never want to talk to in person, so I don't bother when playing online either. You don't come across courteous or friendly people very often, playing online.

quite true, But how are you to know what people are cool and who arnt if you are not talking to them. I typically don't talk for a couple of mins. test the waters see what types of personalities are playing. If there are some cool ones then I will talk to them. The asshats, I just simply mute.

I find it annoying setting up the headset and sometimes my shit is not charged lol. So I got a USB headset and that helps w/ setting up and charge but then the game I play now (Battlefield) mic chat is totally screwd up in it. So I do "private chat" via computers w/ my bro when we play together, other than that.. no need unless it's like tactical gaming.

the question is... what can we do to get people using their headsets more. Hell at least here on cag when we meet up we all be using our mics

Listen to them? You're usually able to listen to the online chatter with or without a headset.

I only use them on Live or PSN whenever I play with people I know or it could be useful for the game, but there are plenty of times that I just want to play without any strings attached.

Many people just really don't have much to say. Most people on PSN just aren't that talkative (and sometimes people have a headset, yet an occassional firmware (like with Warhawk right now)/router issue (like Type 3 NAT) will not allow them to talk). Many I play PSN games at with CAG, admit they really don't have much to say. When I play with random people, I don't talk much myself, but when I play with friends, I talk too much.

Personally, I'm happy because my biggest gripe with XBL while I was on (original Xbox and 360) was people talking too much, getting on my nerves, and saying many terrible things (swear words, racial remarks, etc.). I don't want the community to get into talking much more.

I don't use it because I don't give a crap about what people say. This may be the case for others too. For example, sometimes I plug in my 360 mic and mute it completely just so I don't hear squeaky voices screaming racist remarks through my TV. I'll use a headset if playing with a friend, otherwise, no.

I'd be more irritated about the tOOls that kick me because I get to good of a score in T-hunt vs everyone else, even though I don't have a mic.

The PS3 doesn't come with a headset.

A headset isn't free.

People are cheap, but I think we can all relate to one way or another ;)

I noticed this too, guess people just like talking to each other. Strange....

Though, I'm hoping that when Socom comes out (especially beta, starting Sept 1st) people will start to talk. If not, then hopefully when the game bundle comes out, because according to Socom.com, 7405 out of 9460 people are getting the bluetooth headset bundle.

Honestly, I don't bother using my headset unless I'm playing with someone I know. If I happen to 99% of the time I end up just taking it off because people are annoying.

I think the biggest reason is that the PS3 was never packaged with one. People just never bothered to get one, like myself for example.

One theory that I came up with is that the majority of PSN users are more mature players therefore quiet. Where Xbox live players are let's just say "chatty".

Everytime I turn on my BlueTooth headset my connection starts lagging for some odd reason. So I decided not to use it ever since =(

During cag warhawk nights there's some talking, but I'm not going to talk if I'm playing with 32 random people (especially since I'm generally in lower skill level rooms).

The percentage who use it on the other hand, isn't all that high.

I only use it on Tekken when I'm playing 1 on 1 with a friend.
Because it doesnt come with the console. /thread
How'd y'get Gears of War then?

I mean, if we're going to use laziness as a proxy, let's figure it all out entirely.
I turned off all voice chat options on XBL too.

I don't wanna fuckin' listen to you. That's why.
Yeah the other day on MGO some kid was whining about someone not making it easier for him to kill them when I forgot to mute the mics.

They need to include a nice blue tooth headset in with the PS3 system.
I don't own a headset.. And probably wont buy one unless it comes with a game
(I bought the download version of warhawk)

Should of been included with Metal gear bundle at the very least.

Like most others, I'm guessing because the system doesn't come with one.

And, for those people that refuse to use them, why even bother playing online? I hate when I'm playing a game like Halo, and get stuck on a team where I'm the only one with a headset.

They are already taking a tiny hit (they break even on the 40GB PS3, but retailer loyalties and such cause some money to be lost), so that's pretty much why PS3 has no HDMI cable or headset. IF Sony was making a good amount of money on PS3 (or was able to break even when including a headset), they'd include it. But since they are losing money by including one (if they did), they aren't going to start doing it anytime soon.

I hate when I'm playing a game like Halo, and get stuck on a team where I'm the only one with a headset.
Well, I said it before in games that can detect who has a headset, I usually see a decent amount with them on, but most prefer to not talk.

Well, if you are Type 3 NAT and you just get static (where people can't really hear you and you can't hear people too well), then why use it? Overall, there is some bluetooth communication issues on PS3 (like Warhawk mics cutting out between matches, some games doing the same, or even just using too much bandwidth), which leads to people just not using them. Let's just say using a mic on PS3 in ways, is a bit more difficult than it seems in reality (sometimes in games while trying to switch headset in game, the screen will freeze until you turn off the headset, happened to me in CoD4).
Count me among those who have a headset, and use it, but just not to talk while gaming.
When I talk while gaming, I do much worse. When I'm silent, I tend to do much better. Talking a lot distracts me.

I don't have a usb headset. I have bluetooth but I use it to chat with my nephew while we are playing COD over our cell phones. Much better quality and he's the only one I really need to talk with. But really - we are silent a lot of the time - focusing on the game. I have been on xbl for years. Not playing it much lately. I made some friends on it through the in-game chat which was nice - but now I'm enjoying bonding with my nephew instead of large group in-game chat.

But it makes the games so enjoyable!

Personally on CAG games, I talk. With random people, eh, gonna be muted more often then not. Personally prefer silence over insults, racial slurs, and high pitched whining.

You might as well stay offline and just play against the computer, if that's the case. It'll never curse at you. ;)

its such a pain for me to keep my bluetooth headset around.. i rarely play online as it is on psn.

ill talk it up on xbl though since almost all my friends are on it.
You might as well stay offline and just play against the computer, if that's the case. It'll never curse at you. ;)
Way to impose your will on everybody George W. Count me among those who have no desire to listen to some random guy tell me how his day was, or what he had for lunch, or what he likes/dislikes about the game I'm trying to beat him in. Do people seriously enjoy that crap?

Call me crazy, but I don't need to have a meaningful conversation while I'm trying to play a game. Like others, it does distract me a bit, and I find that some people ramble on with the sole purpose of trying to distract you (this doesn't even take into account the "cursers", "whiners", "screamers", "breathers", etc.)

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate good sportsmanship and fair gameplay as much as anybody, but I just don't need to hear your life story (or tell my own). Hell, I get mad at my wife when she tries to talk to me in the room when I'm playing somebody online, haha.

I don't have a headset, if the console came with one then I would use it.

I'm waiting for the Socom bundle because the bluetooth headset that comes with it looks pretty nifty.
Like most others, I'm guessing because the system doesn't come with one.

I haven't played a game online for almost 3 months now, and that was NHL 08. I have too damn many ps3 games to devote all of my time to just one game. I'm currently at 44 games owned, since getting my ps3 in january. I just don't see the draw to playing one game over and over for months on end.

As others have said, no headset is your main reason.

I don't really care to talk online with (most) people, so I almost never use mine (on Xbox Live). Most people end up getting muted by me because they're annoying when I play anyway.

I think the main reason is that besides that the system does not come with it, is the fact that when the 2.4 update came it fucked up people's BT headsets.
I think the main reason is that besides that the system does not come with it, is the fact that when the 2.4 update came it fucked up people's BT headsets.
Yeah, but thankfully I have two USB headsets sitting around to use.

Well, my bluetooth had some issues with 2.4, but got worse with 2.42 (when Sony has firmware updates, they try reducing the OS size, and when they do it, some source code needed MIGHT have been cut).

PS3 online unfortunately is just not as established and stable as XBL and seems to lack a real sense of community so people really just don't feel any need to talk to each other. I wish that It wasn't this way but it is.

The reason I rarely ever use my mic, even though I have one that works fine, is that my wife is almost always in the room while I am gaming and I don't think most people want to listen in on our conversation. It bugs the crap out of me if I am playing online and I hear a bunch of chatter in the background. People yelling, babies crying, just shut yer shit off if that is the case. Plus if I am talking to the people I am playing with online instead of the wife she gets a bit annoyed. YES, I know I am completely whipped. Just ask stranded Brit he will tell you.
what is that makes people feel so confortable using mics on XBL?
Exactly? What's the big deal about it? I know it's neat that it can you talk about what to do in the game or chat with friends, but I don't understand why it's such a big deal. It's a minor thing to me really. I've heard the whole "If you don't want to talk/hear talk play offline with bots" argument before, psh. I play online for the challenge, the unexpectedness of human opponents, and for the truly crazy shit that happens.

i dont really care for chatting w/people on the PSN or XBL, I have mics for both but I don't use it unless I'm talking to someone I know. Otherwise I don't care about what people have to say, half of the time gamers have background sounds that are annoying or they're talking to someone else/on the phone. When I play I am usually talking to the people that watch me play so it's not like I could just ignore them. Regardless my performance is more or less the same in multiplayer games.
Honestly, I don't bother using my headset unless I'm playing with someone I know. If I happen to 99% of the time I end up just taking it off because people are annoying.
This.

I hardly ever use mine on Xbox Live.
