Star Trek Online: Game Launched! Form CAG Fleet?

*dispatches one of his hawks to keep it's eye out when this MMORPG goes free to play*

given how "BADLY" messed up CO(totally missing all their time lines for progression when you had folk dinging to the cap pre live). ill be skip STO (unless they make my CO life time sub count for STO as well)

I don't see how people can get excited for this game. To me, it just has too much going against it.
1) It is a MMORPG. I see more failures than successes in this genre.
2) It is a Star Trek game. A game series that has a terrible track record.
3) They couldn't get a Star Wars MMO to work and it is probably more popular than ST.

Like Megazell says, wait for it to go free.

Am I one of the only people who liked Starwars Galaxies?

I was a master Armorsmith and I raked in the dough... Millions of credits. At one time I had over 50 million credits.

I sold them on ebay, $100 for 10 million credits.

Hehe I made a ton of money off of that game back in the day.

I made a ton of money in City Of Heroes myself but in the end storylines like Star Wars and Star Trek are hard to pin down to a game experience.

The best Star Trek game, IMO are Elite Force and STNG: Academy.

Elite Force was great because you played an ASPECT of the ST verse - An away team.

I'm downloading the client right now. Should be done in an hour or so. If I don't like the beta will definitely cancel my pre-order on the game. Even with Trek's track record of not so good games, I have to at least give them a shot.

Target has STO Beta for $1.00 with a 5 dollar off coupon for the game...

No need to "preorder"

Man, I better not see that sign...let alone someone buying it...I would slap someone silly for paying to get into a beta.

*Runs and hides....

lol

Man it's crazy logging in. Took like 15 tries before I could FINALLY play the damn game. For the most part the training is basically dealing with the borg. I never got far as the game booted me from the server. I will try again later but expect it to be several minutes of load screens and IF your lucky to get into the game or else the game will boot you.

I'm excited for it, despite it being Cryptic.

It really looks like Starfleet Command: The MMO from all the videos, and I LOVED SFC.

Now if the damn thing would only download.

No you wouldn't.

Well I had really good luck playing earlier in the day, but now I'm getting booted every 10 minutes. Bastards.

Is it any good so far? I kinda want to get it, but don't want to commit until I hear some good stuff about it.

From what I've played so far I have enjoyed it. The space battles took all but like 10 seconds to get used to. Not a huge difference really between that and the ground fighting. Just items that are obviously going to be different between controlling a space battle versus a ground battle.

The tutorial sections gives you just the basics to know what you are doing and I like that, instead of making you play through this just super drawn out and detailed tutorial. Half the fun in games like this is figuring it out on your own, in my opinion anyway. The character creation is decently fleshed out too. There have been some weird glitches I have experienced though. I'm as my character in sector space, when it should be my ship also a miniaturized version of my ship on ground based instances. Beta glitches I know, but really funny.

I'm back in, so I might not respond for a little while.

Yea the beta server is being hammered. Ground activities are a bitch with frame rate drops and so on. I've done the basic tutorials, now can I explore free space?

You can pretty much do that, but really there isn't much I've run across that didn't require mission info. I think I ran across 1 or 2 random instances but not many so far. Of course, I spent a lot of time just logging into the beta. I've been in for about an hour and a half constantly without issue. I just did this one mission, I thought I was going to die. Going against 4 ships, 3 light cruisers and one heavy and I was getting pummeled. I went all the way down to 8% hull strength with only 50% shields all the way around. Luckily I had some shield batteries and that engineering officer perk/power. Only thing that kept me alive to keep fighting.

Yeah I would and I have :)

Geez, can't believe the client is 7.65GB. Where are you all downloading it from? Fileplanet is being super slow, even with their stupid download manager.

Get it off the torrent, went much much faster for me.

I just figured out how to customize your ship. It's kinda neat IMHO. Is there going to be in game voice chat? Has anyone been to any area of space "Worth" visiting? I've been to vulcan and Wolf 359 and yet the "grave yard" is still there along with some starfleet memorial that doesn't do anything. You would think it would tell the story of what happened there. IMHO they should remove the ships as it's a hazard to navigation. Also noticed it takes awhile to jump to warp of a particular area. I thought all I had to do is open up my map, hit a system/sector then jump to warp, but it most cases I had to go at impuse across the map to get it to jump to warp.

Combat can be confusing.

When you are in the sector map, you are in warp. It just looks like you are in impulse speed. That's the main reason why the distances are showing as LY instead of KM. The only thing that acts like warp in the sector map is the Transwarp to the Starbase action.

I picked up a beta key, so I'll be downloading it tonight. Still on the fence about whether I'll actually be interested - I'm a huge Star Trek fan but have never been able to get into MMOs.

I've been the same way with MMOs. So far though, they have kept me involved and I really enjoy the game. I haven't found a voice chat option but in the big instances or trackdown missions that would be nice to have. Even the ground combat settings it would be great for so you can immediately switch to flank incoming Klingons.

I loved SWG back in the day. Until they killed the game with the revamp...

I was a droid engineer. Didn't make any money, but it sure was fun running around with my own droid killing stuff.
You can get free beta codes at Giantbomb.com (you need to register)

http://www.giantbomb.com/stobeta/

By the way, anybody know of other sites/etc. giving away keys? I'm kinda tempted by this one, but I refuse to pre-order to get into a beta.
Mhm.
Mhm.
Reading is a lost art.

I get +5 to flame.

Does this MMO provide anything unique over what is already out there? I mean other than the fact that it has a shiny Star Trek coating and you get both ground and space combat? Seems like every MMO I try these days is just another WoW with a different skin so it makes me wary to even bother downloading.

I meant other than those that were already listed in the thread. Giantbomb is out of codes. Hence the "other" in my post that you quoted.

Really? You tried Alliegence? Or Armada Online? They have unique gameplay and economy models.

Man, I hate this game!
What do you do with Alien Artifacts and other stuff found in space ? This bounce back lag is starting to annoy me :(
It's a beta. Annoyance is part of the fun.

I think the alien artifacts and stuff like that require you to go to a processing facility. Probably something like X number of this gets you this. Don't know though, I've just been running missions for the most part.

Finally starting to find some interesting items like better shields. There are definitely farming spots. So how long til macros are made so that weapons are fired automatically lol?

Damn, what was the point of Pre-ordering it at GS if everyone has keys now? Does the Gamestop version have a dl code for the ship when you pre-order it? The only thing I got was a card with the code and picture of the ship.
