Off the top of my head are (in no particular order except A-Z):

-Blood
-Duke Nukem 3D
-Half-Life
-Opposing Force
-Quake II
-Shadow Warrior

Wolfenstein, Hexen, Heretic, Doom 1&2 (duh), Turok, Corridor 7 (terrible, nostalgic game), Unreal (Tournament).

Just so I don't repeat the classics, everybody should play Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. Great, great game that I bought for US$ 2,00 used. You play both as a human and as a giant robot, FPS style. Recommended!

From my 'Free And Legal PC Games' list I would say

Tribes (1998)

Marathon (1994)

Outside of that my personal favorites that are also retail are:

Half-Life (1998)

SIN (1998)

No One Lives Forever (1999)

I liked that game a bit too but I found it to be too easy. I got that game for just a cheap brand new a few months after it was released. Sadly, it did not catch on as it should have because the MP was great.

I remember my friend showing my Screenshots from SWAT. I think it was SWAT 4 though. Seems like a pretty awesome game.

Half-Life, Unreal/UT and Quake II. And of course Tribes.

Counterstrike barely qualifies as pre-2000 as a mod but I don't really consider it to be in this category.
Wolfenstein, Hexen, Heretic, Doom 1&2 (duh), Turok, Corridor 7 (terrible, nostalgic game), Unreal (Tournament).
Wow, I totally forgot about corridor 7, that game was terrible. Hexen kicked ass though.

I was gonna say Deus Ex, but that came out in 2000 so I guess it doesn't count. So the one game I can really remember being awesome back in the day was Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. That game was so much fun.
Team Fortress Classic
I would add that into HL since you can not play it without HL.

I played TFC from beta to about 2006...Loved that game immensely.

I don't have a list but Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II and Rainbow Six should be considered.

Nvm I'm late, both have been mentioned hehe
How about Team Fortress, circa Quake 1.

Best Quake mod ever.
Agreed but Quake and HL has so many mods that they become a blur after awhile. I remember when Quake and HL was all I ever played...Mods after mods after mods.

USS Darkstar
They Hunger
Battle Of The Millennium
Gordon's Revenge
Jail Break
Vampire Slayer
Natural Selection
Sabeneta 2050
City Of Fear
Infected
Quakerland
Realm Wars
Wizard Wars

and so many GOD DAMN moar!!!!

I had a best of mods for HL, Quake, Quake 2 and other games that was 2,013 individual game big back in the late 90's to early 2000's.

I remember when the Transformer mod came out of Quake and people went nuts online with the sounds from the movies and everything on the maps and such.

Team Fortress, Team Fortress Classic aka Team Fortress 1.5, Fortress Forever and then Team Fortress 2 taking a little from all of the mods and making it such a smash on the PC.

My top 10 list of Pre 2000 FPS
1. Quake III Arena (December 2, 1999)
2. Unreal Tournament (November 30, 1999)
3. Half-Life (November 19, 1998)
4. Team Fortress Classic (7 April, 1999)
5. Starsiege Tribes (November 30, 1998)
6. Doom II (September 30, 1994)
7. Duke Nukem 3D (January 29, 1996)
8. Marathon 2 Durandal (November 24, 1995)
9. System Shock 2 (August 11, 1999)
10 Counterstrike (June 12, 1999)
Honorable Mentions
Goldeneye 007 (August 25, 1997) (I stuck with PC FPS in my list)

Theres also
Rainbow Six, Opposing Force, Thief, Turok, Hexen, Heretic, Blood, Wolfenstien, and Alien vs Predator
Chex Quest needs to be added to this list.
That was a funny game. It's freeware but does not work well on modern systems without an emulator.

Heh, I remember when they used to call them "Doom-clones" and "corridor shooters". I wonder which game was the first to really get the FPS term commonplace?
Another good one: Redneck Rampage! It's a hilarious game!
Wow. I had forgotten that game yet I still use one of it's lines all the time...

"GET OFF MY LAAAAAAAWWWN!"

Great game :)
