The Video Game Soundtrack Deals Thread (OP Revamped 04/28/16)

CAGiversary!

Welcome to CAG's general deals thread for video game soundtracks. The reason for this thread's existence are: 1) VGM collecting can be very expensive, since most physical soundtracks come in the form of Japanese imports, and 2) good deals can be had if one looks hard enough.

Shops listings include basic info, pros and cons, and currently ongoing deals (if any). Major deals will be listed in the updates toward the top of this post. Unless otherwise noted, all prices are in US dollars or Japanese yen. I'll do my best to keep this updated on a regular basis, and hope that my fellow CAGs can help out :)

Thread Updates:
04/28/16: I've gone ahead and reformatted the thread, as I'd thought about doing late last year. The biggest change is that specific deals and sales are now noted in the section below called "Major New Sales/Deals". Shop listings will still include links to sale/clearance sections, but not individual albums. I might still tweak the formatting here and there. Anyway, please let me know what you think.

Other changes for this update: iam8bit and Laced Records have been added to the Official Shops, and some other shops have had their permanent sale/deal sections added (Amazon.co.jp, CDJapan, DeepDiscount, Blizzard Gear, etc.).

Major New Sales/Deals (last updated 04/28/16):
- The Square Enix Online Store is having a big spring sale until May 8th, which includes a handful of CDs at 20% off.
- CDJapan is offering 10% extra points on all released CDs until May 5th.

Albums of the Update:
- The Clock Tower series got a 4-CD 20th anniversary sound collection late last year, in both standard and limited editions.
- For their own 20th anniversary, the original Pokemon Red and Green finally have a Super Music Collection.
- Continuing on this theme, a "Tales of..." series orchestral album came out last month for its 20th.
- As is typical for Blizzard collector's editions, the one for Overwatch will include an OST.
- Joining Capcom's other "Sound Box" releases is one for the Mega Man Battle Network series. This set is out on June 15th.
- Currently playing while I work on this update: the PixelJunk Eden OST (via Steam).

Old updates:
01/24/15: Big updates to Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.com, DeepDiscount.com, and Play-Asia today. Of particular note is the addition of a listing of albums that are free to stream if you have Amazon Prime; see the Amazon.com deals section for those. There's some smaller updates here and there, plus some updated links.

By the way, the dollar-to-yen exchange rate continues to be really, really good, so if you're considering importing, now's a great time to do it!

Albums of the Update:
- According to some shop listings, Nobuo Uematsu has a new release out on March 4th. Thing is, it doesn't have a title yet, and not much is known about it in general.
- Also coming out that day is the Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Original Soundtrack. This year marks the game's tenth anniversary, so better late than never for the full OST to come out, I guess. By the way, Radiant Dawn's OST goes on sale the same day.
- The third "Distant Worlds" Final Fantasy orchestral album came out just a few days ago. This is the Japanese release; no word yet on a US version.
- Ace Attorney is seeing yet another release: Gyakuten Saiban Meets Again: Orchestra & Jazz. This is a standard release compilation of the (hard-to-find) orchestra and jazz arrange albums, for a budget price.
- Hotline Miami 2 is getting a pricy collector's edition vinyl soundtrack. No word on a release date, AFAIK, but this might already be the best-looking game OST of the year.

Glossary:
VGM - Video Game Music.
OST - Original Sound Track. A variation is OSV, which is short for "Original Sound Version".
Arrange album - Game music albums that are not OSTs, but rerecordings or remixes of game music. Square Enix's "Piano Collections" albums and live concert recordings fit in this category.
First Press - Refers to an edition of a soundtrack (or a bonus that comes with it) that is only available with the first print run. Many such soundtracks have the same MSRP as "normal" editions.
Doujin - A Japanese term for independantly made and produced media items, including games (and those games' soundtracks) and fan works such as game remix albums.
Obi - The cardstock piece that wraps around the spine of most Japanese CDs. Used CDs that are missing the obi (if there was one originally) will usually be cheaper, but are not considered "complete". Often machine-translated as "band".

SAL - Surface Air Lift. Economy airmail, with no tracking or insurance (though some shops offer "Registered SAL", which includes tracking and limited insurance). Usually the cheapest international shipping available from Japan; can take anywhere from ten days to six weeks.
EMS - Express Mail Service. What it says. The fastest and priciest international postal shipping from Japan, it usually takes between 3-5 days. Always includes tracking and insurance. Highly recommended for large and/or expensive orders.
Proxy service - A type of shopping service international buyers use to get items that are only sold locally. There are also forwarding services in which an international buyer places the order themselves and has it shipped to a local address, from which it's forwarded to said buyer.

How to Find Game Music on Japanese-Language Sites (when you don't know Japanese):
Copy and paste either the title (in kanji) or the catalog number of an album into the search bar, either at the specific site you're searching, or through Google. VGMdb is a good reference for both types of information.

Free and Bonus Game OSTs:
Unfortunately, the lists for these soundtracks have been lost during the transition to CAG 3.0, and I foolishly did not think to save them beforehand. Therefore, I have begun recompiling both lists here from memory, plus there are some new listings as well. As always, suggestions are appreciated!

Auction Sites

eBay
Formats: CD, vinyl (though it's rare)

Legit Sellers: Otaku.com and NCSX (listed above) are both known eBay sellers; here are some others:
- champ des pins - recommended by SleazyC (for rarities [including doujin CDs], good customer service)

Yahoo! Japan Auctions (suggested by Bloomy)
Formats: CD, vinyl (though it's rare)
Conditions: used, new
+ The Japanese equivalent of eBay, wide-ranging selection, rarities, less of a risk of bootlegs than on eBay.
- Entire site in Japanese, you will probably have to go through (and pay for) a proxy service to get what you want (Bloomy recommends Celga; I like From Japan).

I bought from CD Japan and Otaku before and am very happy with their service. They tend to use boxes for shipment, which is particularly important if the item has a digipak type of packaging, or could easily be dented or crushed.

Shipping usually costs an arm and a leg though.

I've bought from VGM World, Otaku, Amazon JP, CDJapan and YesAsia and all of them had good service. VGM World and Otaku I can single out specifically as they were very open answering questions I asked them about the products they sold.

Very well organized. I've been meaning to start picking up OSTs now that I have a bit of cash saved up, and can justify some random expenditures.

I haven't bought anything from them in awhile, but doesn't ncsx.com carry OSTs too?
Noticed there wasn't a catch-all thread for video game soundtracks, and seeing as how 1) VGM collecting can be very expensive, since most soundtracks come in the form of Japanese imports, and 2) good deals can be had if one looks hard enough, I thought this might be a good idea.
This is amazing!
I am not a super OST enthusiast, though your effort rules
and should elate any interested parties.

great thread...tagged for later...now I need to find a great deal on the Resident Evil: Dark Side Chronicles soundtrack and the RE: Degeneration movie.

Cool thread idea! You are totally missing http://www.sumthingdigital.com . Sumthing Digital is the place to get the Bionic Commando Rearmed, Borderlands, Halo, God of War, Blue Dragon, and other (mostly western) game soundtracks in MP3 form. They usually have 10 or 20% off coupons, too. The current coupon code is vgl15 for 15% off all game music (expires May 26).

Something to remember, if you bought the Tales of Vesperia 360 LE, if you redeem the code that was in there you get Vol. 2 and 3 of the 10th Anniversary Soundtrack on CD (Vol. 1 is in the CE.)

I forgot about NCSX! ^^; Just checked, and they do carry OSTs; I'll add them shortly.

Trying to check another store I forgot (Mandarake), but can't get it to load. I can't remember if they carry game soundtracks; anyone here know?
GameMusic.com seems to have some great prices. Sure there is nothing up with them? A little to good to be true.
It's been years since I last ordered from them, but they're legit.
Yep, that version of Dancing Mad is pretty much the greatest thing to ever happen in the history of the world.
Better than the Black Mages version?

And to Nogib: I'll add the Distant Worlds link to the Square Enix Store section, just to keep all that stuff together. Thanks for the info!

Thanks :) I know Sumthing has MP3 OSTs at Amazon (CDs there, too) and on iTunes, but I'll add the company store as well.

Oh this is just awesome. I've been meaning to create a game music geeking out thread for a while, but this will do. :)

I've been trying to figure out what's up with the Valkyria Chronicles 2 OST, which has been out for a while but the only online store carrying it is otaku.com. It sounds like they're pretty reliable, though?

Sweeeeeeeeeet! Thanks for the effort! I usually buy from Play-Asia and occassionally Amazon JP but it's nice to see so many other options.

I don't think you can anymore, the link to register it seems to just redirect to the main tales site.

Amazon JP has it as well -> http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-l...5WI/ref=dp_change_lang?ie=UTF8&language=en_JP

A good way to search for specific OST's is to use VGMdb (www.vgmdb.net) and grab the catalog number and then google it. You can usually bring up Amazon JP much easier than searching for the title of the OST as the differences in translations of a games name can make it a bit tougher to find.
Better than the Black Mages version?
Way, way, way better. Then multiplied by one thousand more "way"s.

I've been using a similar approach lately. VGMdb typically has kanji titles for Japanese OSTs listed alongside the translated ones; I just copy and paste that into Amazon JP's search window whenever I'm price-checking (or wishlisting) a specific album there. VGMdb in general is great for looking up all kinds of information about game OSTs.

Speaking of Amazon JP, they also have subsections for some specific game series, for those who like to browse. I've pulled out the ones that I recognized here:

- Wizardry (mostly OOP stuff)
- Ogre Battle (all OOP stuff)
- Gran Turismo
- Sakura Wars
- Shin Megami Tensei
- Super Robot Wars
- Xenosaga
- Da Capo
- Dance Dance Revolution
- Digimon
- Tokimeki Memorial
- Dragon Quest
- Resident Evil (Biohazard)
- Parappa the Rapper (mostly OOP stuff)
- beatmania
- Fire Emblem
- Final Fantasy
- Persona
- Pokemon (Pocket Monsters)
- Metal Gear Solid
- Wild Arms
Way, way, way better. Then multiplied by one thousand more "way"s.
Hah, I'll have to check it out sometime, then.

Awesome thread! My go to place for import OST's is Play Asia. Sumthing digital has good stuff.

A suggestion to all....Check out Distant Worlds II. It's unbelievable.

Great thread.

Since you list eBay, I thought I'd bring up that Yahoo Japan Auctions is another option for finding rarities. There's probably a lesser chance of bootlegs there than eBay. Most sellers don't ship internationally, so there'd be some extra fees for using a middleman service. Here's a tutorial on using the site, including some middleman services. I use Celga myself and have been happy with them. Even with the extra fees, YJA can still beat prices on eBay. I recently picked up the Majora's Mask soundtrack, and have gotten some Club Nintendo CDs in the past (I hope the US Club Nintendo adds soundtracks to their rewards). I can't read Japanese, so for searches, I just copy / paste Japanese from Wikipedia articles.

For people who just want the music I found this site, http://www.khinsider.com/11.html,
Click on the download section, and there is a ton of vgm. I got all the Megaman music, Sonic, etc. Only catch is that you must make a $20 "donation", by donation they mean subscribtion, so be sure to cancel., but for $20, I got a sh*t ton of music!
GameMusic.com seems to have some great prices. Sure there is nothing up with them? A little to good to be true.
Their shipping is nasty, but they're alright.

Good thread! Will keep an eye out... :whistle2:D Really wondering on SMG2 OST... I bought the first one from Playasia a when it was released... great price too.
It's been years since I last ordered from them, but they're legit.
I can vouch for GameMusic.com too. I ordered the FF12 and FF7DOC limited edition sets and the Suteki da ne single a few months ago, they are totally legit, non-boot items.

Awesome thread, OP!

OP updated with Bloomy's suggestion of Yahoo! Japan Auctions and SleazyC and my tips for Japanese CD shopping; neatened things up as well. Also, should've said this earlier, but thanks for the kind words in general, everyone. Glad you all like the thread :)

Tempius: That's a pirate site; for our purposes, it doesn't count :shame:

For people looking for some legit ebay sellers, I used to buy a ton of OSTs of ebay about 4 or so years ago and it looks like one of my favorite ebay sellers is still around so here is a heads up:

Champ-des-Pins

This guy is amazing. He is very open as far as communication goes and he always sells a boat load of OSTs (some of these being out of print, rare, and down-right hard to find) and doujins too! You usually don't find any retailers or big boxes selling doujins and have to go to auction sites and this guy sells quite a bit of doujins for anyone into them.

I think I bought anywhere from 5-10 OST's from this guy and they all came undamaged, exactly as described. Highly recommended.

Yeah, that second link works. Thanks for the rec, BTW; going to start an eBay sellers' list.

(I balked at some of the prices, though. Also, do you know what doujin albums usually go for in Japan? I collected [printed comic] doujinshi for awhile and on eBay, huge markups aren't uncommon.)

The ones I picked up were typically $10-15.

I think most of the doujins he have up that are expensive are out of print (the MintJam album as an example is out of print and hard to find).

Sounds about right from what I remember seeing. Just decently hard finding an easy way to buy them aside from a middleman.

Most of the times they seem to be under 1000 yen domestically. Anyone know where to find a cheap copy of '8Bit Hoshi no Kirby'?

That's understandable. Certain manga doujinshi sellers I've seen have big markups for new stuff, even if the circle isn't necessarily famous. From what you and Kirin have said, his doujin CD prices don't seem too bad by comparison.

Seeing OutRun 2 Sound Tracks for $120 still made me shudder, though. Something tells me I'm never going to get that for a reasonable price D:

Your best bet is to find it randomly pop up at Goodwill or Amazon
Debating if I should get the FFXII LE OST. I love Final Fantasy, but haven't heard the music for the FFXII yet.
Great music, but it's definitely more ambient/atmospheric than the strongly melody-driven SNES and PSX Final Fantasy scores. It's extremely similar in style to Final Fantasy Tactics, to the point where most tracks in either game would fit snugly into the other. "Kiss Me Good-Bye" is far and away the strongest of the Final Fantasy vocal singles. And the deluxe edition packaging is absolutely gorgeous. I'd definitely recommend the set, especially for ~$20.

Its alright. At least its only $16, but I do sort of wish they just took the best tracks and put them on a single CD rather then a complete collection, a lot of forgettable music on the whole set.

Well, I bit. Shipping was $8.xx, ludicrous if you ask me. Total was just under $25. I did remember seeing this at a Mitsuwa for like $60-70 a few years back. Either way, I'm sure I will be happy once it arrives.
