Shank - 2D XBLA/PSN beat 'em up this summer

Rooster752

CAGiversary!
I looked for a thread and was a bit shocked that no one is talking about this game. It was playable at the last two PAX shows and is a lot of fun. It is basically a 2D brawler where you can use guns, knives, grenades and a chainsaw. It is very stylish though, and feels like an ultraviolent comic book come to life. I'm really excited for all of these new 2D games, especially when they look this good. I wonder how much fun they are for people who didn't grow up with NES/Genesis/SNES...?

I have an interview with one of the developers up on my site.

Sounds great. I'll be on the lookout for it. I'm a sucker for beat em ups.

If the sales of Castle Crashers/TMNT is any indication, they must still have appeal to the young 'uns.

That is true, or at least a lot of oldheads are still gaming.

a good game is still a good game even if the graphics aren't up to date, I think because Shank is a downloadable game and made it's debut last year ppl just don't hyped up about it enough to talk about it until it's on the market. granted summer is around the corner...I'm more excited about Transformers WFC.

as for appeal to the young'en...it's got violence so...if the demo is good I'm sure it'll get some more buzz from the pepsi generation.

yeah, you're probably right about the violence aspect. I wonder how shocked people would be five years ago if you would tell them about all the fantastic downloadable games there are for xbox especially, but psn/wiiware too.

i saw this game sometime around pax last year... and i really was excited for it... then forgot about it... now remembered it thanks to this thread, first day buy for me!

I think they need to start marketing this game. This is the first time I've heard of it. PAX is fine, but you have to work Kotaku and IGN if you want everybody to get hyped about a game.

I'd hope that we see a bit more about this at E3 since it is set for a summer release. Its being distributed by EA so I'd expect at least a bit of marketing

Shank will be out in about three weeks from now for 1200 points. They announced a new co-op mode recently that is sort of a prequel to the main story mode.

Also, they're about to give out the soundtrack for free and DRM-free once they reach 1,500 fans on Facebook:
How’s this for some Shank fan-love – an exclusive track from Shank’s original score!

The soundtrack for the game was scored by our friend and local Vancouver musician Vince de Vera, and since we’ve been asked about it countless times, we’re going to share his work with all of you. If we can get to our goal of 1,500 people to show their love for Shank by joining our community on Facebook, we’ll release the entire soundtrack for free… in all its DRM-free glory.

If you’re excited about Shank, spread the love, and help unlock the full soundtrack, and remember that REVENGE CUTS DEEP August 24th!

About Co-op:
On one hand, we felt strongly about the classic, couch-play beat-em-up genre; very much like Double Dragon – which is an awesome experience and one of our main influences – but, on the other hand, our single player campaign was something special and truly unique. Every camera is hand-crafted, ever scene and enemy is carefully placed, achieving our vision of the “cinematic brawler.” Moving or shifting one piece of the single-player puzzle, could easily spell disaster.

Having two players in our orchestrated brawler tossed a huge wrench into our development plan. It’s challenging to keep both players on screen, so we can’t be sure how wide the camera will go. We also need enough enemies to keep both players busy, but the added chaos – while fun – introduces a different experience altogether. To make matters worse, building bosses that required two players, served no guarantee that the other player would be around to help. What we definitely didn’t want was to have a lame-o, tacked-on feature that just wasn’t very fun for the second player.

So we bit the bullet.

We said, “we’re going to make a whole bonus co-op campaign, and in each separate campaign, we’re going to play to their strengths.” The solution was to design the single player experience to be far more cinematic, allowing you to really enjoy and savor each action packed moment. We then kept the co-op rooted to the good ol’ fashioned beat-em-up formula that encourages players to help each other, especially during our though boss battles – which we went back and designed specific boss battles that can only be won with a second player at hand. As a finishing touch, we used the co-op campaign to delve even deeper into each character and foe that will eventually mess Shank over, leading up to the events in his story.

At the end, it presented a long list of challenges and obstacles, but it proved to be well worth it when trying to achieve our unique vision that is Shank and it’s co-op experience.

This game is going to be so awesome. It was a lot of fun at Pax, and I can't wait to try the co op. An easy day 1 purchase.

The first batch of songs from the soundtrack have been released:

Second, we’re revealing the Shank Costume Unlocks!

By satisfying different requirements, you’ll be able to unlock these costumes throughout the game, and be able to outfit yourself as, for example, Yellow Jumpsuit Shank (aka Kung Fu Shank). We’re going to reveal all the details of what the costumes are and how to unlock them, one day at a time, through our Twitter account.

So… follow us on Twitter!

The guy in the picture with the hunk of meat seems very similiar to the one assassin from Wanted complete with hunk of meat, just replace his knives for the game's hook.
So there is a whole co-op campaign, not just one level? Great news.
Really? This just became a must buy.

I'm kinda debating between this and Lara Croft. Any thoughts? I Just bought Scott Pilgrim today and deciding on one more...

DeathSpank is the final unlockable costume in Shank.

I would probably vote Lara Croft over this. Finished Shank and it is pretty repetitive. Really neat art style but I can see myself playing LC much longer than Shank.

One of the train cars has a picture of Eets on it. Not sure if anyone is a fan of that game, but I think it's the same dev, and I thought it was neat when I spotted it.

They're both from Klei, so that would make sense. I'm wrapping up limbo (still, I'm a slowpoke) and then I want to get this and scott pilgrim.

Get The Dishwasher then save the other 400 points on Dead Rising Case Zero

I bought this and was able to finish it yesterday in one sitting.
I think the main reason I finished it was because I loved it. The art style is awesome. The animation is razor sharp. The weapons are great. Just an overall fun experience and I can see myself playing it again.

It is on the short side for anyone wondering. It took me about 4 hours 20 minutes to finish and I spent a good half an hour trying to beat the last boss. Took me a little while to get the pattern down.

That last boss was horseshit. If you are going to have cutscenes in a boss battle (skipable or not) you better have checkpoints.

No kidding I thought the same thing. I think that most of the patterns for he bosses are pretty simple. Cesar was really the only boss that gave me problems.

Dodging is the key to beating all bosses.

I need to get a buddy over soon to play the co-op campaign!

scott pilgrim over this game.

reasons: scott is $10, has a much better soundtrack, better co-op campaign and is longer.

shank is not worth the $15 price tag. $10 yeah, not $15. im a ps3 guy and when you compare shank($15) with castle crashers that is coming out next week (also for $15), you get a ton more content with castle crashers. since you 360 guys cant game share, id wait for a price drop.

also, this game on hard has some pretty bad cheap kills. i got so pissed getting hitting by random grenades and falling off a building only to start all the way back from the beginning. same with the Bad Confession checkpoint with those damn rockets.
This game versus Scott Pilgrim? Any opinions?

Shank seems to have plenty of unlockable costumes...

Scott Pilgrim demo killed any idea of playing that game. Stiff and clunky fighting totally kills this type of game. Shank demo for me was this... I will wait until a price drop to play it. I ended up finally biting the bullet on Lara Croft vs either of the two games.

I'd vote Scott Pilgrim. My main problem with Shank is that while they give you all these badass weapons like shanks, machine guns, grenades, swords, and chains, it still takes a million hits to kill every enemy. And as a previous post stated, the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack is so fucking awesome. Anamanaguchi is my new favorite band.

Just a bump, considering the game is on sale for 800 points this week.

I have played through the demo twice, and I'm still undecided if this is worth $10. It definitely is stylish, but it seems repetitive and lacking...fun.

I've really been spoiled with Super Meat Boy for the same price...

I am in the same boat. Just bought SMB, and I liked the Shank demo but don't think I am going to drop the $10 for it.

I prefer this over super meat boy, really. My brother who is mainly into halo even liked the game so I purchased it afterall. For $10 aka 800 ms points, well worth it especially with online co-op. The overall game is perfect for the price really and am glad I tried the demo and glad I bought it.
