As a buyer, I don't leave feedback on eBay...

... unless the seller has already left me feedback. Is anyone else like this?

After any auction ends: buyer sends off money, then the seller sends off the item. As a buyer, my half of the transaction is done. I hate it when the seller doesn't leave feedback sometime between after my payment was sent and before the end of time.

I used to think the sellers were using the buyer's feedback as the sign that the package arrived safely. However, after years of not leaving feedback for deadbeat buyers, only three have ever followed up with a "hey, why didn't you leave me feedback?" kind of message. I'm more inclined to believe that the sellers will withhold their feedback in case the buyer leaves them neutral or bad feedback. Mutually assured destruction-style.

Note: As a seller, I always leave the buyer feedback as soon I ship their item. Usually at the same time as I'm entering the DC#. And this works pretty good.

I used to do the same, but never had feedback returned at all. Now if they started up an automated positive after X days, I may go back to that practice.

Realistically, I could not leave negative feedback as a seller anyway, so it is more about reciprocation. At the end of the day, I have the money and you have the item, so feedback = bonus.

I don't consider the transaction complete until the buyer receives the item and is happy with the item.

If I get a negative or neutral for a stupid reason I don't feel the buyer deserves positive feedback just because they paid so I don't leave feedback until the buyer leaves feedback for me first. As a buyer I leave feedback when I get the item and it was in the condition described.

For example looking at neutrals I got:
"Great ebayer. Received the item quickly."
"I can't remember this transaction, so I guess that means i had no problem"

Neither of those people deserve positive feedback

I hate when someone doesn't leave me feedback, whether as a seller or buyer, so I try to always wait for feedback to be left for me first.

Nope, if I get the item and have no problems then they get feedback. As a seller I don't leave it unless I get feedback because like Bloodbooger said it really is just a bonus since I was selling for money not feedback. I just really think less of the system now that ebay skewed it 100 percent in the buyer's favor. Can't even give negatives or neutrals to non paying bidders which is complete bull.

i left this guy feedback after i received the payment and then he received the item but never gave me feedback

fuck

Nope, I am the complete opposite. As a seller, I will not leave feedback for the buyer until they have left me feedback.

1. Just because you paid, does not mean your side of the transaction is complete. A buyer's half of the transaction does not just account for paying, but it also accounts for communication, courteousness if a problem does arises, etc. If someone pays me and I immediately leave positive feedback, I just left them a good mark. What happens if they come back at me and leave incorrect feedback/try to scam me out of my money? What happens if the post office damages/loses their item and the buyer treats me like a piece of crap for no apparent reason? I just left them positive feedback, when it obviously was not a positive experience. To me, the buyers half of the transaction is not done until they are done with their feedback/communication with me. Therefore, I WILL NOT leave feedback until the buyer leaves feedback for me.

2. This also allows me to keep track of who leaves feedback for me and who does not. As soon as a buyer leaves feedback, I will immediately give them their feedback. If 2 weeks later there are still people I haven't got my feedback from, I will send them a message about it. It is much easier to keep track of feedback this way.

3. Not leaving feedback is really the only protection the seller has left anymore, as we can't leave negative feedback. And trust me, I have had a few buyers that more than deserved some negative feedback. (My favorite was the guy who won my auction, did not pay, then contacted me 2 months after I filed a claim against him and said he had been in prison the past 2 months. He actually still wanted his games, and was pissed that I had resold them. Not my fault. I told him to keep his ass out of prison, and next time he will get his games :D). I feel withholding feedback until the buyer leaves theirs is completely acceptable.

I usually wait until I get the item then leave a feedback. But as a seller, I leave them a feedback ASAP only if they have a high rating.

feedback for buyers is useless as shit
get rid of it all together, it's not like a buyer can get anything less than a positive
and if anything happens, they can just make a new account

Holding feedback hostage is exactly why sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers anymore. Because the vast majority of feedback problems were from sellers. Hell, I used to see "do NOT leave negative feedback for me, email me first, I WILL leave negative feedback for you" in auction listings all the time.

Same here. Outside of one time I've always given positive feedback.

Hell, I used to see "do NOT leave negative feedback for me, email me first, I WILL leave negative feedback for you" in auction listings all the time.
Every feedback system is flawed due to practices like these, just like you said. I remember many instances of never being able to attain resolutions because of feedback hostage. I have had so many awful experiences from eBay, Amazon marketplace, etc. I would recommend leaving feedback for independent merchants immediately, if you are satisfied and know everything is done and in order. I see a lot of old sellers dusting off and starting back up who need good feedback for good service. I guess it's due to the times. Good feedback helps uncertain buyers make up their minds. By not leaving feedback in good transactions, you may deny them potential future buyers or the strength to form a solid foundation. A lot of people are freaked by the prospect of e-commerce, and rightfully so, especially with what I've seen. In regards to larger sellers, it's up to you. I know CAG had a lot of issue with resealed goods and cancellations, like pieceofmindmedia provided reseals. It's irrelevant, but I know they are guilty as charged, along with certain other sellers. People still continue to shop with them and provide good feedback, not knowing any better, etc. Your feedback paves the road for the future of such sellers...

I only ever buy things on ebay nowadays, and as long as I receive my item in the described (or better) condition, I leave feedback as soon as I can. I've built up enough feedback where I don't sweat it if sellers don't leave me any.

buying - leave fb as soon as I receive the item

selling - always leave fb when the item has arrived to the buyer (punch in tracking # and see if it has been delivered)

I only buy on Ebay/Amazon, and I always leave feedback as soon as I've had a chance to check the item out a bit- you know, pop the DVD player in and make sure its working and not a cleverly desguised midget porno film or whatnot. I leave feedback sooner for sealed stuff, becuase I basically jusy look it over and if the seal looks right, that's that (I don't think it'd fair to knock a seller if I opened a sealed disc and it turns out to be defective... it's not like they could test it.)

I acutally do not expect to get any feedback until after I leave mine... just becuase I sent payment doesn't mean that's that- what if it doesn't clear? Just becuase I have the item doesn't mean we're done- what if something's wrong with it? In my mind, when I leave feedback, that's also my way of telling the seller "OK, everything's good", so they know they can wrap it up on their end too. It always seems weird to be when I get feedback before I leave it... I always wonder if they've ever had anyone turn into a monster 2 days after doing that and regret it.

As a buyer I've always left feedback when I got the item, as a seller I've always waited until getting feedback. So yeah, I've missed out on a lot of feedback from buyers.

Lol at that^^ I agree

Our Ebay store is never very concerned with buyer feedback. Generally, at the end of the month we'll do a mass positive feedback for all our good customers. Unless someone contacts us and explicitly demands their feedback.
wtf do sellers say for BIN auctions?
"buyer paid"
what else
Funny you should mention that. Like many others here, I don't leave feedback until the buyer does - as that is an indication to me everything checked out and we are done.

But, on occasion, I get buyers pestering me for feedback before they leave it. Some of them say things like "I paid immediately so you should leave me feedback!". Well, yeah, dumbass, you "paid immediately" because it was a BIN with immediate payment required . There's nothing special about you vs all the other people who buy stuff that way. I almost never bother with regular auctions any more and as a result I rarely deal with deadbeat bidders. Usually my feedback is just "Thanks for the purchase", since there's really nothing I can say about it if all they did was buy it and I never hear anything else from them. If they communicate with me and are nice about it, then I might add a little more like " - an excellent ebay buyer!". I also try to put specific notes in for the good International buyers because I figure that might help them get other sellers to sell to them.

As a buyer, I don't leave feedback until I get the item and it comes back. I have never had an issue with retaliation feedback in the past, and now it's not a possibility, so I don't worry about it anymore. It is annoying though when a seller holds your feedback hostage until they get positive feedback.

I don't really care when I post my feedback, but I should receive feedback as soon as my end of the bargain is upheld.

How can a seller hold your feedback hostage when they can only leave positive?

Your end of the bargain is upheld when you're satisfied with the item and leave positive feedback.

You know, instead of a seller leaving a positive, then having a buyer try to scam them by acting incredibly dense + stupid (or not acting at all, take your pick) and demanding a return after breaking something on their own. All while being audaciously rude and unreceptive to communication.

Because the buyer's "end" also includes how they conduct themselves in post-transaction communication as well. Of course, most idiot buyers don't realize this or are too dense to care.

wow this sounds like a great idea, i might start doing that.

As a seller: I only leave feedback when a buyer leaves it for me.

As a buyer: I always leave feedback when the item is received and checked/tested.

I've sold almost 200 video game related items since June and only have 73 feedback (a few people bought multiples, etc.) to show for it. If it was closer to 175 or so, I'd leave feedback as soon as I got paid. I used to get 9 feedback out of 10 sales, 6 years later it's closer to 4.5 out of 10.

As a buyer: If I get the item and there are no problems, I leave a positive. If the item barely matched the description or maybe it was packed shitty and slightly damaged and I'm tempted to leave a Neutral, I won't give any feedback and figure the seller would rather have no feedback than neutral feedback. I only will leave a Negative if the seller was a real asshole and I had to go through the process of opening a claim and things of that nature. That's only happened once or twice for me.

As a seller: I'll return leave positive feedback if the buyer leaves me positive feedback. I'm not boosting someone else's numbers if they're going to negative me or try to scam me after.

On Amazon I usually never leave feedback for marketplace sellers. I'll leave good feedback if the seller went above and beyond for a good transaction. If the seller gamed the system and deliberately didn't list the item correctly, I'll leave them bad feedback absolutely.

As a buyer, I usually leave feedback within a day of getting the item, only once have I ever left a negative feedback and that was almost 2 years ago.

As a seller, I do what most other sellers do: leave generic feedback when I ship the item.

Either way, the feedback I give anybody is extremely generic. One for when I buy and one when I sell.

I replied to this thread in 2010. hehe

People leave neg feedback for the stupidest shit, half of the time it's because they didnt even bother to read the auction.

Someone left this seller neg feedback, stating:
Purchased 2 items but the seller shipped them out separately. It was very inconvenient for me.

What the fuck?
