WWE generally talks down to their audience and treats them like they're functionally retarded, but the draft is just so beyond poorly conceived and written that it actively pissed me off that night. All I want is some logic. That's it. Apparently, though, that's too much to ask for.
First, please keep using the word lottery. Calling it a draft makes you look ridiculous. Also, I love how these shows have huge rosters, and yet no one mentions (commentary, backstage, whatever) that this RANDOM, NO REALLY, COMPLETELY RANDOM process managed to not only pick someone twice, but never went lower down than 'main-event-lite'. While I understand it, at least toss someone like Chavo in as the second of two picks or something.
Second, I said this last night, but there is a huge missed opportunity for character development with the draft. Both Orton and Rey were sent out after they were drafted, which means there had to be a (kayfabe) decision made between drafting and the match. Show it! Give us some backstage vignettes about how these choices are being made. Clash of egos, all that. Each guy back there should want to be the one going through the curtain, so even small snippets of discussion would be great.
Third, and this is the big one... RAW AND SMACKDOWN ARE NOT COHESIVE TEAMS. These are not comprised of guys working towards a common goal, they are all against one another. So, with that logic, why is ANYONE cheering when John Cena gets drafted to your show? As a heel, like Swagger, wouldn't you want someone like Cena as far away as humanly possible? I mean, again, even some announcer discussion about how after Cena and Orton got drafted, that the Raw main event scene and title picture has suddenly been blown wide open? Two guys that have dominated the title picture leave the show, and no one feels the need to bring it up?
off. Just.
. off.
I know, I know, it's all irrelevant. There are always more poorly written storylines throughout the year (KNEEPADS), but the draft is a great concept executed in the worst possible way. Seriously, outside of Vince walking out with a clipboard and announcing the changes, I don't think you could do the draft any worse than they do right now.
... sorry, rant.
Looking forward to the releases, though.
Speaking of logic, how did Tits McGee end up going from NXT to Smackdown in the first place. Did he win NXT to be on SD? No? So how is he committed to one show or another? He's del rio's bodyguard, presumably a hired one (to show off del rio's wealth).
Now that del rio's been traded, the sketch last night showed him blowing Clay off as if to intimate that Clay is staying on Smackdown, a *show he isn't on to begin with*.
One of y'all said I should pretend wrestling wasn't scripted, and that I might enjoy it more. After thinking about the gaping holes of logic and nonsense in the current WWE product, I'm pretty sure there aren't any scripts.
