not sure if cag allows discussion of jailbreaking, but i need a link for some info on it. and i know their used to be a thread on this.

i currently have a jailbroken device, but it still sits at 4.0.1. i googled and looked over but still have yet to see a good legit site. seems like there is a lot of crap and scams that come up.

Anyone direct me to where i can find out about backing up my current firmware? and whats the best untethered method while retaining the unlockable feature?

Jailbreak talk is allowed. That crunchy guy ran the previous thread but threw a hissyfit when some other dude told him he was running it like a blog or something like that.

Anyhow, I upgraded and jail broke on 4.3.3 last week. I found this article to be slightly helpful: http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak...4-3gs-ipad-ipod-touch-using-redsn0w-tutorial/

The only problem I ran into is that no one mentioned that you have to save the iOS downloads as an .ipsw file. I was only able to do this by using firefox. Anyway, good luck to you!

Uh, well that's your take on it. I didn't want any talk of piracy or anything that could be construed as piracy, but I also got tired of trying to police it/didn't want to police it. So I decide to close it. And yes, that "dude", who loved to talk about downloading stuff illegally, and trying to justify it, got pretty irritating to me and, yeah, I probably did throw a hissy fit. ;) Anybody who is up for it can start a new official thread. You can't talk piracy, but jailbreaking isn't inherently that. Unfortunately any jailbreaking thread seems to draw such discussions.

Anyway, the other day I unjailbroke and I'm not currently planning to rejailbreak. It slowed down my iPhone, caused issues with updating apps (often took several restarts to get app updates installed - I mean App Store apps), etc. I like some of the hacks, but iOS 5 is looking good and I did have problems with my jailbreak. My phone is working better, since restoring to factory. YMMV.

It's time for me to upgrade my OS - I'm on 4.1 or something... anyway, last time I updated everything I had set up on my iPad got erased and I had to redownload and reorganize everything again. This also happens when I try syncing to iTunes. Is there a way to avoid this?

I've never had to do that, even when jailbroken. If it's an update it's not a problem at all. If I restore, then it asks if I want to restore from my backup. I do that it ends up reinstalling all my apps and such, just as it was. However, I've seen others say the same thing. Are you running the latest version of iTunes? Do you let iTunes backup your iPad? Allow it to, or right click it in the iTunes sidebar and manually backup. Other then that I'm not sure what to tell you. It should put you back just lik you were. It's possible your jailbreak (I presume your jailbroken) has messed something up and that's preventing the restore from backup from working. You might try trashing your existing backup and then making a fresh new backup.

I am not running the latest version of iTunes because of what happened the last time I synced (I will update it tonight though). I lost the folderenhancer and SB settings apps which completely sucked. It basically went back to looking like it did before the jailbreak (even though it was still jailbroken).

I don't have the iPad set to manage my apps manually - that may be the problem but how do I get it to not automatically sync as soon as I tether it to the computer? It has to be tethered to changed the settings but by then it will be too late!

Oh - you mean you lost jailbreak stuff? If you update that will happen. No way around that, I don't think. However, just syncing shouldn't do that. I think your jailbreak is just messed up if that's happening. I'd restore, or rather I'd use the jailbreak method that does a restore to custom firmware that is jailbroken. The restore will clear the jailbreak hacks and apps out, but it should clear up any problems. Then reinstall what you want. Just understand that when you install jailbreak hacks, you are likely going to have to do troubleshooting. They can conflict.

thanks. thats a good site.
Yea i remember crunchy's old thread and found it to be very helpful. unfortunately with this type of topic there is a lot of crap you'd have to sift through and unsavory sites you'd have to go. it was nice to see it on this site with some integrity.

Well, I was trying to keep the integrity in that thread, but it was getting painful. However, maybe now that we have these Apple forums here, and so far no sign of the "dude", maybe it can be kept as such.

Actually while we are on topic here about jailbreaking. Can I revert back to the official apple OS after Jailbreaking?

I wanna jailbreak my iTouch but I will only do it if there is a simple way to do it because iOS 5.0 is looking sick.

I'm curious as to what you were running that slowed you down. I admit that 4.2.1 slowed mine down a lot and also crashed constantly but now on 4.3.3 it's the fastest it's ever been. I've yet to experience any crashes *knocks on wood* ;)

An update will usually clear out the jailbreak, but it will leave stuff behind that will take up space. However, if you do a restore it will get rid of (almost) everything. Restore from backup and you're good as new, with all your iOS stuff back in place (but make sure you are letting iTunes back up your phone! The only things that will remain are any preferences for jailbreak apps that use the iOS preference system. For example, if you use ScreenDimmer there will be a preferences file for ScreenDimmer stored in your backup in iTunes, and that will get restored from the backup. But that's just a small text file.

Not much, actually. I had MyWi, My3G, ScreenDimmer and some of the emus with their bluetooth stuff. I would say that the speed of my iPhone is a little better without the jailbreak, but it isn't a huge difference. I think what I was really seeing is that the iPad 2 is *way* faster then the iPhone 4! :) However I was definitely having problems with installing App Store app updates when I was jailbroken. Often they would get stuck during the "Installing" phase and never complete, even if left running over night. I had to reboot my iPhone and then do the install again and then it would get stuck again on another one. Repeat. I had been having this problem for a while, and it stuck around even after restoring and rejailbreaking. Since getting rid of my jailbreak it's all been working smooth as butter. I'm sure I could have eventually figured out the cause, but I decided just to restore and stay with stock iOS, especially with iOS 5 on the horizon.

well i just updated my jailbroken device to 4.3 while still retaining my unlockable baseband thanks to Ed's link. so thanks for that. And i can't believe how much faster 4.3 runs compared to 4.0.1.

But another note, when did infinifolders start charging .99 cents for it? is there any comparable app for that? don't really want to give them my CC info
