I think most people will say they've had mixed experiences from them...

I've had orders placed and filled...

I've had orders placed for great prices (because of coupons and sales not because of mistake price) and then cancelled because they are OOP when the items isn't OOP and they restock a few weeks later...

I've had preorders placed for great prices (because of coupons and sales not because of mistake price) and cancelled because item is OOP when they aren't even released yet...

I've had orders placed for mistake prices and filled...

I've had orders placed for mistake prices and cancelled...

I've had orders placed for OOS items for crazy prices that they actually filled most of the order (big surprise)

All that being said... I use them for cherry pick prices. If it's something thats close to a price somewhere else I'll order somewhere else or if it's something that I really want soon I'll order somewhere else.

The one thing I will say is be careful when using a debit card with them because they seem to use rolling holds on backorder items. Meaning they will place a pending charge on your account for 3 or so days... then when it falls off place another pending charge the next day till your item ships.

Personally I have no desire to use Deep Discount again. I ordered two Blus from them during a Fourth of July sale that I didn't receive until November and I'm lucky to have even received them according to a lot members of this forum. Items will be out of stock for months and the company will never give you an indication of when your item will ship. You really just have to hope you get it eventually. I haven't seen a sale worth that kind of hassle.

Yeah, I have had the same experience as metallicoholic. I've only placed two orders with them, and both times the orders took over two months to get to me.

Deepdiscount Personal Experiences and Outcomes:

1. Forgot to refund me for canceled items. They never did.
2. Canceled everything I ordered time after time, but included a cryptic message that didn't say directly why, and none of the reasons were applicable. The items weren't even price mistakes and I paid with a good card that doesn't ever have issues.
3. Took three months to ships items, and many have reported much longer waits.
4. They lied about their stock status time after time, meaning you're probably not getting what you order for some time, because they don't actually have them on hand to ship, which is every experience anymore it seems.
5. They canceled every price mistake I've been apart of.

In my experience, DD doesn't charge you until they ship and you should expect price mistakes to be cancelled. I don't know about you, but I think Amazon is the "only" purely dotcom retailer to actually have a good return policy. Most likely, if you're buying from DD, it's because you're scraping at the bottom of the barrel for something you really don't need or want that much and can afford to wait for. And they're perfectly fine for such purchases.

Deepdiscount charges you as soon as you place the order. EVERY time. I don't know how anything different has ever happened to you. As for DD experience: well, you get what you pay for. Shipping is slow, if ever. Packaging is HORRIBLE. Order status is useless (I've still got an "open" order from 2007 and nothing in the last couple of years actually shows up as shipped). They do some VERY odd things (they claimed a package was sent and returned to them. Instead of simply resending the package, they refunded the first ordered, billed me a second order at a higher price [the then price on the site] and then refunded the difference between the two. At the end of the ordeal, I paid what I should have, but at one point they had billed me more than double what they should have). In short, you won't pay for it if you don't get it. You will get most of what you order, even if it takes awhile (I ordered some VERY cheap anime in a sale a few months ago that all showed as backordered. It took over a month, but I did get all of it at the extremely low price). Basically, you're not going to get ripped off, but be fully aware of where you are ordering from. And think twice if condition is a factor. They have some of the worst, if not THE worst, packaging. Best Buy might actually be worse though.

DD charges me when they actually ship. Actually, every single dotcom retailer (even places like ColumbiaHouse) I've purchased at do that, unless you're using a third-party paying service like paypal. You'll get an authorization to detect sufficient funds, which can even show up on your unbilled transactions sometimes, but it'll fall off. Some people don't understand the difference.

I don't put much stock in individual experiences. The people that have bad experiences are going to be the LOUD minority and make it seem like every idiosyncratic experience happens to everyone. I've bought stuff from them for a probably close to a decade now (more so at the beginning since they were more price competitive than Amazon for a while) on an on and off basis, and the long shipping wait and cheap packaging is the only real concern. But once again, you can't be a cheap hoarder and want all your stuff to come mint either. It's basic give and take.

Borders had the worst packaging hands down. They just seal the item in an unpadded plastic bag. DD and BB at least have some padding.

Great site 5 years ago, complete waste of time now. My only beef with them way back in the day was that pre-orders would ship weeks after release, which would piss me off. Nowadays, I never even go to the site. My last order sat in backorder status so long that I just canceled it myself because Amazon ended up having the item cheaper a month later. At least my forced cancelation went smoothly.

Oddly enough I used to go to a Deep Discount retail store in a suburb about 30 minutes from me. The prices were always radically different from the website. They only shared the name and logos, pretty much. Some great finds in their B&M. Alas, that closed about 3 years back, roughly around the time the site really turned to crap.

Deep Discount: Used to spend upwards of $200+ when their 25% sale was going on, then less as it moved to 20%. Then, as has been mentioned, the site changed hands and quality of service went way downhill as did the deals. I haven't ordered from them in years.

DVDPlanet: Ordered some box set stuff from them a few years back, and most of the packaging was damaged (the carboard boxes the box sets came in were all crushed). DVDs were ok and I got them at a great price, so didn't worry too much about it. Like someone said before, when you're scraping the bottom of the barrel for deals you can't exactly be too picky with what you end up with.

OP: Always ask yourself two questions with DD:

1. How much am I saving over buying it elsewhere?
2. Do I need the item by a particular date?

If the answer is

Some of their anime deals are great, but the wait is annoying and every DVD I ordered last time came with a loose disc inside. Not to mention, they vacuum seal most of their packages making it difficult to just rip open.

Don't order anything if you need it by a certain date. They're basically the Ron Popeil Showtime Rotisserie machine of online retailers. "Set it Order now, and forget it!"

Didn't know about the change in mgmt at DD. Too bad. I used to order from them regularly and they were always prompt and product was in good condition. Now I order sporadically at best but still no qualms.

Their mediocre overall always have been years back they were always slow as hell to ship my stuff out due to being in Illinois I think and on top of that a guy in Alaska would even get his shit before me. Add that to way to many cases of loose discs and I can't recommend dealing with them only did myself because I wanted Cromartie and they had it cheap.

To make a long story short, I've had enough negative experiences with DD that I don't shop there anymore. I'd rather pay a little more elsewhere for more reliable and hassle-free service. Haven't had trouble with DVDPlanet, but I've only ordered from them once or twice.

DeepDiscount.com has always been a bit lacking, but their customer service has completely gone down the drain.

I placed an order on May 19, received a confirmation email and the order displays in my account history. Since then I hadn't heard a thing, so I contacted customer service. The reply I got back said that my order hadn't properly been entered on their end, so I would need to place it again. I hadn't been charged, so I had no issue with that.

Unfortunately the sale prices were no longer active, so I contacted customer service again asking for them to be honored. Here is the response that I received:

I have never had any sort of issue with DeepDiscount.com until recently, when PayPal transactions would still be charged upon cancellation of an order without a refund being processed. This caused three separate incidents where PayPal claims had to be filed, all three of which were decided in my favor. DeepDiscount's complete lack of customer service is the only reason that I can think of for my account being denied.

Have not used Deep Discount in years, but I have ordered several things from DVD Planet (especially WB online-only Blu-rays, as they're usually cheaper than Amazon). I personally have not had any problems with them and they have a rewards program that allows you to save a few bucks on future purchases.

The biggest problem with DVD Planet is that their base prices are slightly higher than Amazon. Then again, DVD Planet doesn't charge tax.

Haven't used DD in years...last time I did they took 3 days before automatically canceling my order so needless to say haven't been back since. Before that I ordered a few times from them, mostly when they had their 25% off everything sales. Their prices aren't the greatest, mostly competitive with other places but Amazon usually still beats them and if not we are talking cents differences. They did fuck up one of my orders but they resolved it within 2 weeks. One thing they have always been good for or rather were is finding oddball CDs and other non-movie items as not many people seemed to check their site for anything besides movies so I found some uncommon things there for decent prices.

DVDPlanet I only used once but didn't have any issues with. Order came in same week, no problems. Good deal too, I honestly should check that place more often.

This....exactly this. I do not think I have placed an order there in about 8 or 9 years now due to this. I used to spend about $100-200 twice a year there with their 25% off sale. Now, I'd rather pay a buck or two more at Amazon and know I'm getting the item.

I have ordered from Deep Discount once during a B1G1 free sale many years ago. My paid item got cancelled and the free item shipped. I was very satisfied!

Exact opposite story here. Free item was canceled and got to pay $12 for a blu-ray that was destined to be five to six bucks down the road.

Deepdiscount and DVDplanet have really erratic track records. I would not shop with them unless you feel like taking a gamble. Honestly, I purchased the Twin Peaks Blu-ray boxset from DVDplanet about a year back and did not have any issues. I would advise never doing any B1G1 sales.

Ordered from them back when they were called "DeepDiscountDvd" and didn't have any problems with them. Same with DVDPlanet.

Years later I now stick with Amazon, Best Buy, SecondSpin, and Rightstuf.
