It was being first that probably gave Xbox 360 this generation anyway, and people are jonesing for a new console more than ever.

Well... That's not exactly true. The Xbox 360 had a clear advantage over the PS3 in the US, but the PS3 has over taken the Xbox 360 in World Wide sales. http://www.destructo...dc-242222.phtml

When you look at the sales of the Xbox 360 and PS3 they seem to do better/worse in different regions. The Xbox 360 did much better in the US. The PS3 did much better in Japan and the PS3 did slightly better in Europe and Canada.

Although, the Wii still dominated them all.

To be honest, I'm not sure what Sony can do to convince me to buy a new console. As it stands right now, the PS3 meets my needs. I doubt a PS4 will be more powerful than my PC and the gains that can be had on my TV are limited.

Personally, I think this is the challenge that both Sony and Microsoft have in the next generation. Nintendo decided to answer this with their gamepad, and it is unknown how well that ultimately will work out for them. What will the other guys do to convince us we need a new console?

Yeah, my biggest fear is that the PS4 and 3rd Xbox are going to be too similar. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are virtually the same in terms of their capabilities and games. They are going to have to do something to distinguish themselves from the competition.

The Wii U is the family console, the OUYA is the indie console and it's going to be interesting how the 3rd Xbox and PS4 market themselves.

Sony has to act agressively. With the wiiu having a dry spell right now, sony has to get this thing out this year to get a head of the market. Once the exlusives from the wiiu comes out, consumers will have to decide which is more favorable to buy.

Sony's and Microsoft's launch lineups will most likely follow the same pattern: titles that were rushed to meet the system's launch with one or two gems, followed by a dry spell of new content for several months thereafter. Devs are going to need some time to become learn how to make the most out of the new platforms (at least they won't have to struggle with the Cell architecture anymore). We probably won't see much in the way of quality exclusives until a year after each system's release.

I can't wait to see to see the PS4 & 720! :)

To be honest, I think we reached a point in gaming where the benefits of the new console might not be as huge of a leap as before. Sure the game will look better, but I mean I don't know how much more gameplay elements they could add that a PS3 or 360 could not do. Especially with a game like Call of Duty, realistically I don't see what more they could add besides more graphical effects. I hope to be proven wrong.

The biggest problem that I see with the Xbox 360 and PS3 right now and the reason why we probably need new consoles soon is that they have insufficient ram to really do much more. I think the next consoles will definitely have better textures and allow for more things on the screen. Hopefully this will also mean larger scale maps and more players being able to play multiplayer games at the same time. I think the games in the next generation will be clearer and pretty much all games will support 1080p and 3DTVs. They will probably also support HDMI version 2.

If I had to guess, I think there will be an even bigger focus on community and I think Sony will probably do a better job with integrating their operating system into everything. I'm also hopeful that they open up their apps a bit more so we can get more internet tv channels.

No chance of BC since the hardware is so different.

I'm curious how this will impact this generation due to PS+ and the store. Throwing out years of free content and purchases could be harmful to sales of new hardware, considering it might not motivate people to make the move right away. It also kills the current catalog of content on the store for any new customers to the brand. Sony really didn't plan well using proprietary hardware and M$ won't face these issues, so it's going to be interesting for sure.

It was being first that probably gave Xbox 360 this generation anyway, and people are jonesing for a new console more than ever.

I think price played a much larger factor than being first.

Kind of exciting, but no way I'll be buying a $400+ console, so I'll likely be waiting a few years. Unless they find some way to make it $199. One option would be a subsidy thing, like Microsoft has done. So buy the console for $199 with an X year PS+ contract at $50 a year. Of course I suppose it's more likely the price would be $299 or $399 with an X year contract. That would be less appealing.

This will be out by November, theres no way they would release it after the holiday season. Even if they couldnt meet initial demand, theres zero chance they would let the new xbox be "the holiday gift" and once again, start playing catch up from the get go.

Sony has so many games coming out though this yr...isn't that going to be confusing with a new system launch?

How does this convince you, 2014 very few PS3 games come out. 2015 only crappy ports or sports games come out on it. Convincing?

Eh...how many come out this holiday? Also, are you sure none will have a better version on the new consoles?

Unfortunately both of these. I can see Sony finally releasing The Last Guardian, on the PS4 only. Also, Metal Gear Solid 5/The Phantom Pain, and big games that have been announced/hinted at but not tied directly to this gen consoles will be probably be PS4/NextBox only games.

Now that you mention it, this makes me sad. It would mean they skipped an entire generation of consoles without a game. :(

I've got another one for you. Final Fantasy Vs 13. Announced before the console even launched.

Well, IF you count FFXIII as a proper sequel then at least PS3 got three games.

I don't particularly care about better graphics, but like someone said, the memory increase will be a big deal to what they can do with games, especially online multiplayer.

Mass Effect 3, for instance, was gimped by the 360 and PS3's low memory. They'd have been able to do more if only they'd had twice as much to work with. Also looking forward to better framerates (hopefully). I'd love to see some series return to 60 FPS (looking at you, Insomniac)

PS3 still GOOD enough for me. Why release PS4! Not looking to spend extra $400 - $500 on new system. Release more GOOD GAMES :)

I'm very anxious to see this announcement and what the next generation has to offer us. I'll probably not purchase a new system until a deal or first price drop, but it doesn't lessen my excitement or curiousity any! :)

With a backlog as big as mine, it will take nothing short of Kingdom Hearts 3 for me to buy a new console within the next 4-5 years.

I don't know about you but I want 60 FPS in 1080P. That IS graphics.

Probably going to wait at least a year (probably two) before I buy a PS4. The PS3 is really rolling right now as far as value and content and I really don't think I'll need a PS4 any time soon to get my Sony fix. My PS3 backlog is really outrageous and will last me quite some time... :D

I think the PS4 this year is one year too early, however perhaps Sony will put it out on the market (at a premium) at the same time as the PS3 in response to a new Xbox from Microsoft. I think the PS3 still has a good 2-3 years left in its tank and is one of the best gaming values out there.

Downloadable PSN games are indistinguishable from those on disc. The same hurdles still exist.

They said that about PS2 games... they'll probably take a similar approach. I don't know that much about the emulation process, is there a reason this can't be done with PS3 "Classics"?

Consumers will be pissed if they can't play all of their PSN games on PS4.

I do, too. It's just that I don't consider resolution or framerate to be encompassed by the contemporary usage of the term 'graphics'. Many people don't even realize what resolution is when they talk about them.

But, yes, I would love if the PS4 could at least match my computer from 3 years ago.

The resolution issue was confounded by the fact that in this generation games ran at sub-HD resolutions. There was some false advertising there or many people were delusional, or both.

Rumored hardware, would make both of those things nearly impossible to achieve.

I don't care if it plays PS3 games (that's why I own a PS3). But it better not cost $599. There's no way they make that mistake again, especially if Xbox's new console releases around the same time.

I'm thinking $399. Competitive price point. Part of the reason the PS3 was so expensive was the BD drive was new tech at the time, that's not the case anymore. Will come with no game, but sport the new dualshock controller with some sort of touch interface built in. Release date November 4, 2013.

An easy argument for BC is that if a PS3 breaks people will be more likely to purchase a PS4 to replace it. This creates a bigger install base and causes the sale of software to increase as well.

A graphical leap isn't really necessary at this point unless Sony is going for high-end customers. "Good Enough" is what people respond to, but only if the games are great and the price is right (low in this economic situation).

That true. Bc when I bought my ps3 in 2006. The Blu ray player was 1000 dollars and my ps3 cost me 758 with a best buy plan. But it was still cheaper then a stand alone Blu ray player.

God of War 2 came out 3 months after the PS3's launch for the PS2.
