If you are a Power up reward member and you buy Assassin's Creed 4, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Fifa 14 or Madden 25 for the Xbox 360 you can trade that version of the game in towards the Xbox One version and only pay $10.The catch is, You'll have to buy a given Xbox 360 title within 30 days of its launch, and you'll have to use the credit before the end of the year.

The eligible titles (sold separately for $59.99) are:

Activision’s Call of Duty®: Ghosts
Electronic Arts’ Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14, and Battlefield 4
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag

To qualify for this offer, a customer must be a PowerUp Rewards member at the time they purchase a new eligible Xbox 360 title(s) within 30 days of its initial release and then trade that game at any U.S. GameStop location for the new Xbox One standard version of that same game. Following the purchase of an eligible current generation title, members will receive the guaranteed $50.00 trade-credit coupon via email and in their PowerUp Rewards Active Offers. Redemption of the coupon must occur by December 31, 2013. Offer is for a limited time only and may end without notice.

Big thanks to GoGoMo

Not bad if you're an achievo hunter.

I know kids that ended up buying GOTY just to double theirs and either giveaway/sell the copy later.

Mind you, two people that have done this are also in the 100,000+ bracket.

70 or wait 59.99

also does the 360 game need to be complete or can you  trade a Disc copy

if u can buy a used copy and use it to upgrade that would make it better

I think its actually a pretty damn good deal. It may not be one that can be exploited to amass a ton of credit easily, but it is a gamer-friendly offer.

So wait, let me see if I understand.

Madden comes out what, August 27th? I have it the day of release and I can trade it in December 30th for the Xbox One Madden? I'm lost

Just curious if people think this is a good deal...?

You could buy 360 version on day one.  Play it, trade it in, pay $10 for the XB1 version, and get a $50 credit.  So you're down $60 + $10 = $70 (before taxes), but you have $50 in credit.  So at the end of the day, net, you're out $20 ($70 - $50), and you have an XB1 game.  (Assuming you were going to spend that $50 in credit anyways.)

Seems like a good deal, no?

Can someone explain this deal to me and what I am missing?  If I buy a game for $60 and then trade it in with $10 to get the next gen version, Gamestop will also give me a $50 gift card?  So you are essentially getting a rental on the current gen version and ownership of the next gen version for $20.  This seems too good to be true - especially for Gamestop.

I don't think you get credit AND the Xbox One game. Only the Xbox One game (for $10 more.)

Yeah, it's my understanding based on a few articles online that you buy Madden on the 27th, get a coupon on your powerup account that bumps its TIV up to $50 when you trade it in and purchase the X1 Madden upon its release, and then you pay the difference. Not terrible, could be exploited depending on how the coupons read/people holding on to the X1 copy a few days and returning it for credit. Hard to say, seems like a pretty interesting way to move product though. Strange that it's for X1 though when GS has had super limited supply of the X1 preorders (or perhaps makes more sense, to limit people from taking advantage of the offer, but also potentially building inventory from the core audience who does upgrade).

Ah, maybe I misinterpreted the deal.

From the actual press release:

The eligible titles (sold separately for $59.99) are:

Activision’s Call of Duty®: Ghosts
Electronic Arts’ Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14, and Battlefield 4
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag

Ah, so the 9.99 is kinda deceptive. The way it probably works is:

  • you buy 360 version, spend $60 (again, ignoring tax for now)
  • trade in 360 version, buy XB1 version, spend $60
  • you get emailed the $50 credit (for the 360 version trade in)
  • out of pocket, you've spent $120, got back $50 = net $70 for next gen game.

Meh. I guess if you want double achievements or can't wait for the next gen console to drop, then this makes sense. Otherwise, nah.

It looks like you have until December 31st to trade-in the 360 version of the game regardless of when you buy the next gen version. That's actually a nice extra for those who might want both versions for a few months - especially for the flexibility of playing with friends who don't yet have an Xbox One.

EDIT: Nevermind. I misread that you have to trade it in when buying the new version. This could still be a decent deal for some people in certain situations.

Also, keep in mind you have until Dec 31st to use that $50 credit, so depending on how long it takes them to email it to you, might not be wise to wait too long to do the swap.

I can definitely see my achievement whoring friends do this for the double achievements.

I think you have this a little wrong. It looks like you get a coupon for a $50 trade-in credit right after you buy the 360 version. You then take that coupon and the 360 game to buy the next gen game for a total of $10 as long as you do it before December 31st.

I suppose this means that Gamestop will not be dropping the price below $60 for these Xbox One games until after December 31st. I suppose that's pretty predictable - especially for next gen stuff and for Gamestop. If there is a price drop on the next gen games, you could conceivably come out ahead.

I am curious if it will allow double achievements. I know I am speaking about the PS3, but with games that have cross save they have the same trophy list. I am also curious if Xbox will allow for you to carry over your MP stats from Xbox 360 to Xbox one version of games like with COD Ghosts. Will they separate the different versions of games even though its the same user name? Will you have to grind out the levels you have already reached?

I believe Major Nelson or some MS exec specifically said earlier this week that yes, you can earn achievements for both versions of the same game.

Edit: It was Marc Whitten who said it. Multiple sources, but here's one:

Speaking with Marc Whitten, Xbox One's Chief Platform Architect, IGN asked specifically "Can you earn two sets of Achievements for the same game (i.e. Playing Call of Duty Ghosts on Xbox 360 and on Xbox One)?"

"WHITTEN: Every game has its own set of achievements, so if you’re playing Call of Duty: Ghosts on Xbox 360 and on Xbox One, you can earn a separate set of Gamerscore in each game. But on the Xbox One version, you’re getting a much richer set of features, such as seeing your achievements progress on the Xbox One console, being able to unlock new achievements throughout the year, and earning real prizes inside and outside of the game. Xbox One also enables a new concept of challenges, where games will be offering special time-based opportunities to earn various goals and collect the rewards. More info on challenges can be found on Major Nelson's blog here."

-Buy any eligible 360 title within 30 days of its release

-Have until end of December to bring the coupon and the game back in and trade them in for a One copy of the same game

-You pay $10 to upgrade from the 360 to the One version

It's not that hard

Edit: Nevermind. Yeah, you're right, and Glass_Ghost_0's post above this one makes more sense than what I said. Lol. (I mistakenly thought the coupon was sent AFTER you buy the XB1 version.)

The end result of the math is still right. $70 for playing 360 version and then trading up for XB1 version.

I don't see a point in doing this, unless you aren't getting an Xbone until Christmas, and want to play Ghosts or Battlefield day one. Keep in mind, you're going to lose out on any preorder goodies like new maps.

It's a very weird promotion, but I guess GameStop makes out because you've essentially bought one Xbone game for $70, and they now have a used 360 copy to sell for 100% profit.

This is a huge plus for FIFA players (there are lots of them!).  FIFA 14 comes out on ps3/360 in september, but FIFA14 for ps4/x1 comes out in december, iirc.

And EA has announced that ultimate team is transferable between generations (actually it's one account and set of servers, whether you use a current gen or next gen client machine).  This means players can get started on ultimate team when FIFA comes out, but they can still sell them next-gen versions when they come out.

There's no way fifa junkies will wait till december just to get next gen.  but there is no way that someone who is getting a next gen console will not spend an extra $10 to upgrade to the next gen version, if they can transfer their FUT.

Usually the first batch of EA sports games on a new system suck due to a bunch of missing features that their last gen counterparts kept. See FIFA 06 and Madden 06 on the 360.

Have Madden 25 pre-ordered at Amazon for Sunday Ticket. Theoretically, I could purchase another copy from Gamestop, receive the coupon, return new copy to Gamestop and then trade-in the Amazon copy for the Xbox One version?

I can't imagine them taking away the coupon, the only thing I could imagine running into problems is that the Amazon version of the game may have a different SKU than the Gamestop version due to the Sunday Ticket promo?

Worst case, they reject my trade-in.

that one is in a different case i think

This is basically a $10 rental for a couple of months for a launch sports game, I think is not a bad idea since many people like playing the sports games at release and can later enjoy even better HD graphics, or at least I will assume.

those seem like ancient examples. I'm actually more worried about the current-gen version of fifa this year, as most everything they've been showing for the game is next gen.

I don't have to buy the game from GS, right?

Have a ton of trade-in credit so this would be great for a game or two
You have to buy it while being a Pro Rewards Member. The only way you get the $50 is if you bring in the coupon that is emailed to your account when you purchase from Gamestop.

Of course they're ancient, they were the first EA Sports games on the current gen of gaming consoles.

You can probably buy the game at launch for $60, then trade it in later on for the upgrade, then just return the upgraded game and get your $50 + $10 back. A good way to rent the game for a couple of months for $10 AND use a crappy Gamestop promotion in a much better way.

I might jump on this deal for ghosts if my progress would transfer from xbox to 1 (prestige, level, etc).  but  I do not see it transfering over.
