Did anyone order a PS4 for Amazon recently (restock) and notice something weird about the packaging?

To start I have a launch PS4 that I received on release day from Amazon. It works fine.

The PS4 listing briefly came back in stock at Amazon earlier this week and I was able to order two. I'm going to keep one for a second unit and the other was supposed to go to my Aunt as she desperately wants one to get to her son (my cousin) for Christmas.

Well the first unit I ordered during the restock arrived yesterday. It came by FedEx. On the actual shipping box was a sticker that said

"Not for Sale ---- Replacement Console --- PS4"

and then there was a barcode with some numbers that looked like a S/N but wasn't in the correct format to be a PS4 serial number.

Then over the UPC on the actual console was another sticker with the same S/N and words "Replacement Console --- PS4"

I planned on keeping this unit and the Sony PS safety seal was in check so I didn't think too much of it. Initially I thought maybe these were returned and refurbished by Sony but I couldn't imagine that Amazon would sell refurbished units as new and the seal hadn't been broken so I settled on the thought that they were extra inventory that was held for returns and whatever was left over was put back up for sale.

However I haven't opened it yet and thought I'd ask here if anyone else had a similar experience.

Moving on....

Today I received the second PS4. Because of my experience yesterday I looked this one over thoroughly. There were no "replacement" stickers but this unit did not have the standard blue safety seal. In its place was a clear piece of tape. It did not look cheap like scotch tape but none the less it was NOT the standard Sony PS safety seal.

I was able to peel that piece of tape back so that I could open the box  and confirmed the S/N on the console matched what was on the box so it wasn't an issue of someone swapping a broken console with a new one but there were definitely fingerprints all over the console and the clear wrap that covers the PS4 had been removed as it didn't look fresh like it would have originally..

^ Do you think Amazon is opening and testing returns and those that pass QC are being resold as new?

Anyone experience something similar with a unit that they received from Amazon recently?

Did you contact Amazon about these issues? That's the first thing I would do, to try to determine why the units you got had these anomalies.

My guess would be consoles returned because of the HDMI port issues at launch. They were probably sent to Sony for repair, then sent back to Amazon for sale - technically refurbished

That sounds a bit sketchy to me.  Definitely contact Amazon tell them that you suspect you received a non-new console.  Hopefully they'll take care of you.  Amazon customer service has always been very helpful and understanding, in my experience.

Personally, I would ask for a credit to your account instead of returning it. Advise that you received a refurbished console and it is illegal to sell it as new. I'd ask for at least $50-75 credit to your account...

I had an amazon order just like you clear tape.  But the clear tape is on in a way that like someone else said it would be nearly impossible to remove the blue tape and add the clear tape without tearing the box.  I have no real information yet but I'm hoping it means that Sony opened the box and either tested it or they started putting clear tape on them because they are out of the blue tape.  The other one that is refurbished is complete BS.  I would return that one and complain to Amazon about selling refurbished consoles as new.  Those are Not For Sale consoles!
