2014 MLB Season Discussion

What bothers me more than anything is that Major League Baseball wanted this and now they're trying to shift the blame on the players. They knew players were using steroids and whatever else, but they didn't do a damn thing about it because they didn't care. They could have been testing all along, but they didn't do it because their primary concern is selling tickets and merchandise.

If MLB wants to get away from that, then that's fine. They should start testing every active player on a major league roster at least once a week and test every player before and after every single playoff game.

Bagwell and Thomas are very similar players. I think the knock on Bagwell is that he is short of 500 home runs. They are so comparable, they have the same birthday.

Well that solidifies it for me. If they have the same birthday there's no way they can keep Bagwell out.

60 Minutes interview with Anthony Bosch tonight that apparently is going to just light A-Rod up. Allegedly, he was obsessed with PED injections and told Bosch that he wanted to be the first player ever to hit 800 home runs. Lots of text messages from A-Rod too. But just keep denying Alex. You did nothing wrong, lol.

Agree 100%. This has been my stance for some time. I think it was right that Clemens and Bonds got denied going in on the 1st ballot. That's an honor they don't deserve. But they should go in now. They were both HoF talents without steroids. Keep out those that clearly were products of steroids, though.

It's pretty hilarious how high and mighty the BWAA is coming off. They act like they are completely unbiased individuals, and that only they can handle the sacred obligation of voting on these awards. You know, like when Jill Painter put Shawn Green on her ballot, or how the only 2 people who didn't give McCutchen 1st place MVP votes were St. Louis sports writers who gave it to Molina, instead. Yep, completely and totally unbiased and well-informed voters!

Molina was a legitimate first place vote. Now if they had voted for Matt Carpenter, then I think there's an argument.

You are missing the point. He got 2 first place votes. That's it. And they both came from St. Louis sportswriters. You can make an argument that Molina may have deserved the first place votes...you can't argue the fact that it isn't mere coincidence those are the only 2 first place votes he got. Carpenter also had a very similar season to Molina and finished right behind in MVP voting, so really wouldn't have changed if you interchanged the players.

That's not the only example of writer bias. It was merely the most blatant and recent example.

I think it's the same fatigue Yankees/Red Sox players get as well given the Cardinals recent success.

Oh, great, one of the oldest franchises in the game now has Wally Bear as their mascot. Wonder when they will incorporate the rest of the NO! Gang...

Well, at least the mascot seems to come with 100 years of agony built in. That expression just doesn't look happy.

I like that new Cubs mascot.

When they are fighting several other notorious teams for the worst in MLB this year, that mascot will have more meaning than wins or losses.

I guess since Shoney's restaurants are few and far between, Shoney Bear jumped over to the sports mascot world. Could be his cousin at least.

Don't worry. I have no idea who he is either.

Semi-Pro Bro!

"I use a water bottle so it doesn't spill." Still one of my favorite lines, haha. :)

Glad to see he's back with new videos too. His power pitching video with Troy Percival is pretty funny.

MLB will have extended replay this season.

All managers will have 1 challenge. Pretty much anything except balls and strikes can be challenged.

It's better than nothing, but until balls and strikes (at least called third strikes/ball fours) are included, blown calls are still going to happen.

Called balls and strikes really shouldn't be challenged imo. The only time they should be reversed or looked at is if they blatantly horrible calls (see: TB vs Texas last year)

Yeah, but then you get into a slipper slope. What is a bad call? Yeah, that pitch to Zobrist was a blatant bad call, but how do you make that challenge worthy and something two inches off the plate not challenge worthy. It would have to be all balls and strikes.

Exactly. You can't allow challenges based on gray areas. You need defined situations where they can be used. Maybe say any called strike that ends an inning. At least that way, if the manager wants to use his challenge because he thinks his team's rally was killed, that's his choice.

I guess I wouldn't even see the problem with opening it to being able to challenge balls/strikes entirely just due to the fact that you only get one challenge. If a manager wants to use it in the 2nd inning in a 0-0 game, that's his business. One challenge is one challenge.

Saw this on Deadspin. I hate Bud Selig.
