I did a search and didn't see another thread for this, so here's mine. If I overlooked another thread feel free to delete this.

Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy today. They plan on closing about half it's retail stores and working out a deal with Sprint to take over a portion of the rest. There's no official store closing list yet, as many of those stores are not closing, just having big sales. See one of the many articles about the store.

I'm located in Milwaukee, WI and I can vouch for a number of stores that are in clearance mode.

This topic is wiki enabled. Feel free to update this post with store clearance sales in your area or add any other relevant information.

So far I was able to find out the following via store managers:

  • When a store is converted into a clearance store, anything of high value such as cell phones, laptop computers, video game systems get sent back to corporate. Occassionally you find a spare unit left behind for sale, but it's very rare.

  • Clearance stores have shorter retail store hours and close early. Here in WI that seems to be 6pm.

  • Clearance stores are messy. Expect to see things in the wrong place, distressed packaging and the like. You may need to gather up items of interest and take them to the counter to be scanned so you know the prices.

  • Discounts are rolled out in tiers. I haven't been able to find out a schedule. Local stores here look like 2 weeks of 25 percent off, 2 more 50 percent off, 2 more 75 percent off.

  • Radioshack.com seems to have accurate pricing in many cases. Take a smartphone in the store and look items up on the website. Then take the applicable percentage off that price.

  • Any items that are tangible are fair game for the sale. Gift cards, warranty plans, Xbox/PSN cards are not part of the sale.

I'm finally going to get a cell phone!

Once they get to 75% and it's done with, the store closes up and we're done.  Which means we have six weeks to find full-priced useless junk and wait for it to get down to cheap junk.

Ok I stopped by a store today and they claim the company is scrapping the tiered discount system. Supposedly now they have no idea what the discount will be, it's different on everything. You have to bring the items to the checkout and have them scan them to find out what the discount is. I'm calling another store to confirm tomorrow, but this is pretty stupid if its happening across the board. So what they expect we will all just shop there like normal and just pay slightly less then what we see on the sale rack? No wonder they're going out of business.

Picked up the X Mods Buggy Starter for $20. Probably go tomorrow and pick up the X Mods cars for $13. Thanks for the heads up!

I guess the Superbowl ad they paid a crap ton of money for didn't help.

What were they thinking? That marketing was the reason they were failing? Once people realized they didn't need to spend $80 on a six-foot HDMI cable their fate was sealed.

Good riddance.

Another store I called says the tiered sale is still in effect. So perhaps I got a flaky clerk at the last store.

Still, I'm hearing all stores are supposed to be closed down by March 31st. I wonder what eBay seller is going to end up with all the stuff they don't sell?

I wanna get myself one of them radio scanners. Not much else that really caught my eye but possibly an RC heli. The stores around me only carried the Onyx EZ XM radio and not the Onyx Plus which I would prefer due to the Xtra 2.0 channels.

I was at the mall yesterday picking some gifts for my wife, I passed by the Radio Shack in there and it was closed. I noticed a few weeks ago that they were discounting everything in there, I figured something was up and then read the article the other day, I didn't think the store would close so soon though.

I haven't been in a Radio Shack in forever but I remember there being Cell phones. Anyone think these will be marked down(full price w/o contract) or are they just being sent back?

OP said anything of high value is being sent back to corporate, cell phones included, which is why I think there's a slim chance there'll be any good deals. Maybe if you need cheap batteries or cables.

One of the local stores closed last Sunday, a rather quick turn around since the announcement.  I would like to pick up an HD antenna and a few charge cables if I can find them.

No HD antenna and no normal micro USB cables like I wanted (only had the retractable cable, which are junk).   But I did pick up a couple two packs of F-connector male (coax) to RCA for use on the 2600 or other old consoles.  Also picked up a transformer (300 ohm screw to 75 ohm coax).  Total cost was under $5.

Yeah I have been reading the consumerist about these reports for a long time now.   I use to be an ASM back in 2003 before I quit to move into the education teaching field.  I found out the store I was an ASM closed down in early 2014.  Funny thing is that out of all the places I have worked at, I learned a lot more about electronics then I did when I worked at Target/BB/Service Merchandise/Kmart.

I saw lots of red LED lights, but they were the wrong voltage.

I went back and these stores get better the longer you wait. It seems district managers at least around here have been going to each location and pressing management to discount things faster. Here around Milwaukee it's dropping so much that they no longer put up signs, and the percentage just keeps going up a little each day. I few highlights:

-- Gigaware Universal Gaming AC Power Adapter Model 2601436 normally $15 - $3 (AC adapter with 5 connectors - covers PSP, NDS, NDS Lite, NDSi, GBA SP, GB Micro, 3DS)

-- Make: Arduino Bots and Gadgets book by O'Reilly UPC#9781449389710 MSRP $34.99 - $3

-- Make: Electronics by Makermedia UPC#9780596153748 MSRP $34.99 - $3

-- 25W Pro-Line Soldering Iron with carry case UPC#040293987152 MSRP $40 - $6

-- Cold Heat Cordless Soldering Tool with case MSRP $20 - $3

Good thing I picked up rosin core solder last week, they were totally out today.

I'm going back to one location early next week. I'm going to put a bid in on those shelfing units with the pull out drawers they keey the electronic parts bags in.

^^Yeah That stuff wasn't reduced at my store yet. (I went today) They said most of their stuff was shipped off to a clearance center. LEDs were few and far between, but they were still full price. They had nothing posted about closing either.

I'll keep my eyes on the soldering irons. I need one for NES mods.

Damn, forgot to check for soldering irons.  They have the TR-60 (60w) and the DSL-050, hopefully I can pick one up.  There were still some bot kits and those "Make: Electronics" available.  Been sick so I only spent 5 minutes in the store a few days ago.  Need to get back this week while there may still be some decent stuff.

They didn't have any of the soldering irons or LEDs.  Was looking to pick up a few AC adapters (specifically the switchable type) for older systems, but I'm not sure if I got the correct ones.  Grabbed a Enercell 9v~800mA non-switchable and a 6-12v~2.5A switchable.  Other issue is regardless of which ones you grab, you still have to get the correct adapter tip (sold separately) even for the non-switchable.

The price isn't that high $3.50 for the adapter, $0.70 for the tips.  Which ones work best?

From what I gathered talking to the employees at a few stores near me that are closing/closed, they shipped the good shit (ie. PS Vitas, other stuff along those lines) to the non-closing stores before the closing sales started.

Picked up some HP ink for 75% off at one store though.  Other than that, pretty slim pickings from the stores I've gone to.

Man, all the stores in Brooklyn are shutting down. I'm lucky that I work next to a electronics supply store regardless. Radio Shack did fuck themselves up over the years.

These last few years I've just seen RadioShack as the place you go when you absolutely can't wait for shipping online. Picked up 2 mono 1/4 plugs for under $5 at mine

Radio Shack needs to mark down that TRS-80 behind the counter. 15% off the $500 price is a bit steep.

It even comes with a free comic book.
