I just now got a gaming capable computer recently and i decided to go and check out what was left of one of my favorite games to read about in Game Informer many years ago. Hellgate:London, i guess the initial studio who made it, which some were made up of Ex-Blizzard Staff, went to shit and some other company bought the IP and made it free to play. Don't get me wrong, its not an amazing game, but its a lot of fun and it almost reminds me of Bloodborne in some odd ways. So maybe this was the precursor to BloodBorne and some other games? IDK. I think everyone should try it out and play it for a little bit while the Servers are finally getting shut down.

Here are some links and i would like to know if anyone has any fond memories with this game!

Anyways, im currently level 7 and enjoying checking out all the randomness that is this game. What really brought me back to this game though was the fact that the Original Developers did promise a PSP version or Sequel/Prequel but obviously did not make enough money to do that. But honestly, looking at the game, they could have possibly ported this over. Could have eaten Untold Legends Initial Sales out.

Yeah, Flagship Studios if memory serves me correct...  (It did.)  They did some really cool things but also some really foolish things.  One of the first studio's to push for microtransactions (though it might have been some sort of monthly fee) in games...  and that's sort of what doomed Hellgate: London.

They released HG:L  with the intention of adding them later (just no plan on how they where going to do it) and people rebelled...   They wouldn't buy without knowing what they where really buying in to (which makes sense) and, truth be told, publications held that lack of plan against them...  I know PC Gamer back in the day reviewed it allot lower than they would have as they admitted it in the review.

Obviously, that wasn't cool but it was foolish...  Their cool but foolish moment came with Mythos.  A game built with the same engine, and allot of the same mechanics, that started out as a tech demo for HG:L but evolved into a full game (I think it technically never got out of beta but it was fully playable) that was given away for free because they found it fun.  (I didn't look overly long but it was free via download so it has to be somewhere on the net.)

And, yeah...  I loved the vibe of HG:L and I'm always sad that it failed to really make an impact on gaming.

i think the biggest impact this game made was Diablo 3 lol. That and i swear that its eerily similar to the Dark Souls Series or BloodBorne. Like i said im enjoying it while its still free and functional. I will be looking into the game you were talking about. I remember the Catacombs Game that was supposed to be like this too. But i dont think it ever left the development floor.

Mythos did not last nowhere near as long as hellgate lol.

Bill Roper's ego was pretty much what doomed them. He promised a lot of things and then tried to lower expectations when he failed to deliver on any of them. I played the free beta and the game just lacked that addictive 'oomf' looter-shooter games need to survive. MMOs also need community to survive and that was over before it began as players openly rebelled against Flagship Studios.

I know they submitted to Steam Greenlight a while back, but I don't think anything came of it.
Approved by Valve like a year ago but nothing from the "developers" since...

FYI: The global F2P version is shutting down towards the at end of the month... back to disc single player only from here on out.
