I definitely get apprehensive booting up a longer game. A game like XCom wouldn't bug me, 30 hours isn't too much...it's those hugggge games, like Elder Scrolls, where at the beginning, I'm like, okay, if I start, this is all I'm doing for like, the next 2 or 3 months. The game I just bought that I want to get into but at the same time don't is Civilization 5. I haven't played a Civ game in awhile (3, a few years back), and I remember easily losing entire days at a time to it. Civ is one of those games that you just don't stop playing. There's no satisfying endpoint. When you run through the entirety of a game, you're like "hmm, guess I'll boot up a new one then."
Elder Scrolls - and games built just like it - are games that I just can't keep going with. B/c they are so big; have so many different story-lines, quests & threads - I just can't keep playing them for ridiculous numbers of hours & days & months in a row. After a while, it can get repetitive - especially since they ain't changed too much in the gameplay regard, over the years. They're a game that I like to spread out and come back to every now and then, for whatever my "fill" is - and every time I come back to play again some few months later, it feels like I just bought another damn expansion.

Same goes for TDU2, as well.

Over 100 hours w/ Skyrim base-game - still ain't done with it.

Yeah, I hear a lot of people say this about Elder Scrolls games. I'll admit, the gameplay is extremely repetitive. I have no idea why I love the games as much as I do; it takes me forever to get bored with them. When I play one of them, it's pretty much all I play until I finish all of the questlines. I was playing through Skyrim this winter, and got through all the questlines + the Dawnguard expansion, and was on the quest for the final daedric artifact, and was about to start the Dragonborn expansion, then my Xbox got jacked. That sucked. Bought Skyrim again on Steam though, plan on going through with mods...eventually. But yeah, I can see what you mean about needing to take breaks. I guess I just don't share that need...don't know what it is about them, but the Elder Scrolls games are pretty much my gaming nirvana.

Regardless of if you are playing as Connor or not in AC3, the first part can't be discounted as irrelevant to the story. It's a pretty major part of the story.

Speaking of Skyrim, I've been playing Dead Island a lot lately and like it a lot more than Skyrim.  I've heard complaints of the combat in Dead Island, but I like it more than the one in Skyrim so far.

Are you playing in analog mode combat or normal (default)?

I think it had a lot of problems at launch, but by the time I finally played it, I didn't have any problems. 2nd best zombie game in my opinion, with State of Decay #1.

Looking forward for the PC release of SoD so I can try it out. DI is shaping up to be one of may favorites, though I have pretty fond memories of Dead Rising and it's hard to top Killing Floor and Left 4 Dead for me. Not to mention stuff like Nation Red.

Well, for everyone, it is indeed different.

I think Skyrim has so many different storylines, threads, quests - I just don't want to exhaust them all ASAP. I did play Morrowind and Oblivion like how you play Skyrim - and I can't do it anymore. To me, the gameplay itself just hasn't changed enough over the years to make me stick w/ them.

Also, b/c I do play so many shorter games - I don't want to do the 100 hours in a row thing anymore w/ one game, if I don't need to. Skyrim is not story heavy enough or character heavy enough - I just can easily drop it at whatever feels like my fill. Skyrim for me is not like say many BioWare games - where in those BioWare games, I just have to keep playing b/c the story, plot & characters are keeping me wanting to stick w/ the game, even after a BIG number of hours of playing without touching other games.

Ummm, which one? Dead Island or Skyrim? I'm playing DI on the PS3 with a PS3 controller, default. Skyrim on the PC with KB/M.
Dead Island.

In the Options menu - there's an Analog mode for Gameplay/Combat, if you are playing w/ the gamepad.

I really wish the game EXPLAINED the two game-modes in a tutorial and at least showed them off.

Analog mode is for more Advanced players, namely. It changes combat completely. It doesn't just stick the crosshair on your enemy somewhere close to where you're swinging - like it does on the Default Mode.

In Analog Mode - your right analog stick actually literally controls the actual literal power & speed for the actual swing of your attacks, depending on how far you rare + hold back on the swing AND how fast (or not) you flick the analog stick. It certainly can take some time getting used to - it has a learning curve.

But, yeah - Analog Mode for combat is pretty cool, if you ask me.

Wow, didn't know that. Probably should have read the manual, but I'm a real gamer so I don't. I have to admit it takes me a while to get used to analog mode in sports games, mainly boxing games, but I might give it a chance on DI. Game says I am about 21% done with the main quests, but I'm taking my time and trying to do all the side quests as I go along.

Analog mode is what really made Dead Island unique.

I didn't read the manual, either - especially since I bought the game digitally.

(Actually, technically - dad bought the game for me for my Birthday, few years ago).

I knew of the Analog Mode way before I bought the game - namely, from a GiantBomb Quicklook w/ Brad Shoemaker explaining what Analog Mode for the "Fight Type" is and does.

He starts talking about it around 5:30 into it.

There's an Achievement out there for those who use the Mode quite a bit.

Another update: Eador. I'm really loving this game, about 10 hours into it (is a nice number considering the backlog) and still want more. As I said before, is NOT MoM, but is the closer one I've played.
Which Eador are you playing: Masters of the Broken World or Genesis? I got both in the recent Groupees bundle and Don't know which to play first. Have heard that many like Genesis better.

Thanks!

I'm playing Masters of the Broken World.

The first world is a tutorial, a long and good tutorial. Then it unleashes, and is a hard game. The good thing is you can choose the difficult for each "shard" you attack...

I know it had bad reviews, but mostly because a ton of bugs, most of them already patched. I still see some graphic glitches, but they don't affect the gameplay

I've been playing it too (running through my card games) and also enjoying it. I tend to start falling asleep after the 30-45 minute mark, but I think that is mostly do to the one constant track playing in the background (I should probably just turn it off). I haven't played anything very similar to it so I'm still rather lost, but it's certainly a bit addictive in the way it's structured. I'm still in the tutorial world I guess, so we'll see how much staying power it has, but I'm surprised it's appealing to me (as I said, not the type of game I play often if ever).

That said I definitely agree about the graphical glitches. I can't tell if I'm getting lag or the animations are just super jerky, but I can certainly say the graphics are very uneven (the water looks great I think, but the towns and characters are in dire need of more AA than is available in the options menu). It's not a deal breaker or anything, but I might try Genesis and see if I prefer it's look, as I've heard the graphics are one of the main differences between the two.

Yeah it definitely is a bit pointless to have both, aside from being easier to sync stuff between the two (though there's dropbox for that).

I think Amazon Mobile is their cell phone carrier service or something like that, but either way here's a link to the app store: http://www.amazon.com/gp/mas/get/android/ref=mas_rw_ldg

You can also find it by attempting to download any app on your PC, as it requires you to first link a phone to your account. As a side note I might as well mention todays free app: Sugar, Sugar. No idea if it's any good, but it looks weird enough to get me to download it so I guess it's doing something right ;)
My wife thanks you for this. She's been wanting this for awhile but being Mrs. Cheapass, she didn't want to pay 99 cents for it. lol

Speaking of Skyrim, I've been playing Dead Island a lot lately and like it a lot more than Skyrim. I've heard complaints of the combat in Dead Island, but I like it more than the one in Skyrim so far.
I loved Dead Island, it actually surprised me since the reviews were so negative. I loved the co-op aspect, which is what drew me into Left 4 Dead. I'd like to say more about Dead Island but feel it would be giving away major plotlines and ruining the experience of people who have yet to play it. I still haven't gotten into Skyrim yet knowing that I can only play sporadically, it's hard to start. (my friend has played a couple times when he came over, and it is definitely a beautiful game visually though) Maybe if Skyrim had zombies, I'd get into easier. Right now I've been playing FO NV whenever I get a chance, it's way cool seeing actual sites I've been to digitally visualized even if it's after they've been nuked to hell.

Count Burgula, out.

I didn't buy this and haven't play this but you might want to get you some SweetFX (for SMAA)

So how far has anyone gotten in Paranautical Activity and is there an endgame to it yet?  I know it's in early access.  I played it for a bit and didn't last more then a handful of rooms and probably died 7 times in 10 minutes.  Possibly I am just terrible at it, but was wondering if I was doing something wrong.

Edit:

Also, Paranormal is really cool in case you didn't know that :)

yea i had the same experience when I played it months ago on Desura. I know what you're doing wrong cuz i was doing it too.

you're playing the game

I don't know, IMO it makes sense to stick to one ecosystem, either Android or iOS. The two aren't really designed to be interoperable--specifically on the Apple side. Apple stuff is designed to work with other Apple stuff (theoretically at least) in an easy and user-friendly way, but not necessarily with non-iOS or OS X devices.

In a broad sense I think it's redundant to have an iPad and an iPhone because they mostly do the same things, but if you need a smartphone and you already own iStuff and have an iCloud(sp?) account, I don't see that it makes any sense to go outside of the Apple ecosystem for your phone device. You won't be able to find the same apps that you have on your iDevice and it won't work the same way.

Whoops, forgot, picked up Planescape too during that sale. Everything I've read about Planescape, people just rave about it. I'm looking forward to that more than anything from that sale. I played it for about 5 minutes while trying to set up a widescreen mod, and I could tell right away it'd be interesting just because the setting is so different.
You should play Torment soon. It's probably one of the best cRPGs ever.

Yeah, BG2 is even better than BG1 - even the story-telling and writing is MUCH better in BG2.

Anyways, yeah - I don't recommend after doing any long games, you do another of the same right afterwards. I'd even recommend hoping to a different genre entirely. Space them out.

For NWN games - I loved NWN1: Hordes expansion; really liked NWN2 (base game); and loved NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer.

If you ain't played Planescape: Torment - make sure some day, you eventually get around to that.
Agreed on most points but you left out Storm of Zehir, which was excellent. It brought a real Pool of Radiance feel to the series with the return of a true overland map.

Thanks for these comments. Eador is on backlog but I'm excited to play when I can devote some dedicated time to learn the system. MotBW is still being patched, so maybe by the time I get around to playing, some of these issues will have been addressed.

That's why I am platform agnostic, I have every system in case of platform emergencies. It can get expensive, but video games are what I choose to do with my free time, so that's what do. Some people go on vacations, some raise horses, I enjoy games.

After being underwhelmed by Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us, I've stopped putting a ton of stock into most reviews. Not that I was particularly interested in it to begin with, so 10 or 1 it doesn't matter much to me :???:

Side note: am I the only one sick of hearing GTA described as "a sharp-tongued satire of contemporary America"?

You're gonna take that sharp tongued satire and you're gonna like it.

i've owned 2 360s and a ps3 and they all took a shit

i don't hate consoles at all i just much prefer pc. but there's some games i really, really like that will never make it to pc.

Many Rockstar games are severely overrated by the critics. They are good games, but perfect they surely are not. Red Dead Redemption and GTA are the top offenders here.

I agree with most everyone about the new GTA.

THey always seem to get BEYOND stellar reviews and yet every time I am only moderately satisfied with the games.

I am like CarpeCubensis and own all systems as well as a stellar PC and will likely just wait out GTA to a price drop. With BF rolling around I am sure I can nab it for relatively cheap. Even then it probably will just sit in a backlog anyway haha

I actually just had a conversation with my friend the other night about PC vs console games being created and it is unfortunate that the age of PC only games is getting more slim by the day I feel like. Most large companies simply want to market to console gamers where they can more easily sell and appeal to the masses and then maybe haphazardly port them to PC.

I just watched IGN's video review of GTAV and I have to say this is the first GTA I've ever been really interested in.  I am a sucker for a good story, and Sleeping Dogs demonstrated just how great a modern sandbox game can be.  But I still have plenty of caveats: I want a good price on it, and I want it for the PC, and to have a good port, not like every other shitty port Rockstar has ever made.  I'm not likely to pick it up otherwise.  I think it's about time they show the PC gaming crowd some respect, especially considering that's where they started out in the first place.

Daily Deal

Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed - $19.99 $4.99

Seriously considering grabbing this, since I missed the $7.49 Sonic pack glitch, though part of me thinks amazon will have it in a $10 bundle soon and I don't own any Sonic games on Steam yet :whistle2:k
I'd hold out if I were you. The way they've been pricing this recently it's a shoe-in for the next Amazon bundle, which I'd venture is about as inevitable as Amazon discounts get.

Yeah, that's what I figured I'm just sorta itching for a good kart racer. Chances are I wouldn't even get around to it before a better deal pops up though, so I'll probably skip it and wait for amazon or whoever (Humble Sonic Bundle?).

80% off La Mulana...I smell a bundle.
Your nose is a little late ;)

Weird because red dead is my favorite rock star game by a mile.
Bully would like a word

80% off La Mulana...I smell a bundle.
Yep, that's my issue here too. A good friend of mine has been raving about this game for weeks now after beating it last month. He keeps telling me that since I loved the Castlevania games on GBA and DS I'll love this game as well. $3 seems like a good price but I've also had buyer's remorse multiple times when games in my backlog appeared for $1 in bundles (hello, Brutal Legend). Hmmm still $3 doesn't seem like a bad price to pay even if it's bundle fodder eventually.

Quick, where's my crystal ball?

I hardly think being in a Greenlight bundle prevents it being bundled again at this point, months after release...wouldn't you agree?
No, I just meant it's already been bundled. The way you said it I wasn't sure if you knew or not. It could certainly be in a new bundle soon (maybe even a HIB9 bonus), but we all said the same thing about Giana Sisters when it was -80% and I'm still waiting :whistle2:(

True. La Mulana and Giana Sisters in HIBX...

At any rate, for me personally at least the 75% off rule doesn't apply anymore. Only 90%+ is an instant buy for me, what with all the insane bundle deals we've seen this year.
