I already have Gears, but I'm still glad they are giving it out instead of Gears 2. Unlike previous sequels they have given out (Fable, Keflings, and Dead Rising), Gears games are meant to be played in order for the story. Plus they are both $3 at Gamestop. Personally I like to check out the first part of game, movie, and book series before spending money on sequels.
Normally I'd be with you on this poing but most people don't really care about Gears' story. It would have been smarter for them to give away 2 since it could get people interested in the multiplayer and maybe they'd sell a few maps or copies of Gears 3. 1's online is still terrible and the very few people still playing will annihilate newcomers. The only people that prefer 1's MP are those that bought a 360 at launch and had no other options for a while, then didn't like that they tried to fix Gnashers-only/shit connection/Final Destination with 2.

Single-player is pretty rough too, but at least still playable.

Ugh! I already own both of them.

Shoot Many Robots is fun for about 15 minutes, then you realize how shallow and uninteresting it is and that you're basically doing the same thing over and over again.
Yeah i played it with my brother and we not even finished the game. After a hour you realize that, 360 have tons of better co-op titles. Game like this needs levels and enemies variety. Shoot many Robots doesn't offer any of this.

As for Gears, i would be surprised to hear if anyone with 360 still doesn't have it.

Gears 1 is 10x better than Gears 2.

Already own it but looking forward to SMR. I personally think they're nailing it with this program. I can't believe there's games that I don't already own and everyone that I haven't has been very good.
Gears 1 has the best visioning of the series. The contrast and and environments were perfect. The multi-player sucks by today's standards though, and Gears 2 mp is a vast improvement.

I don't think the Gears 1 controls are particularly bad, nor is it difficult.

After December, there are no more free games right?
I love free stuff!!! but the games chosen are old, uninspired choices that I really am indifferent whether they do it or not. I almost feel obligated to download a game I have zero interest in playing. (because its free!) The program actually has a negative effect on me-- ugh

No. Gears 2 had the worst mp in the series. Even Judgement was better than 2.

1 > 3 > Judgement > 2

Gears 1 is going to be.....interesting to observe.

The campaign part of the game is fantastic but the VS multiplayer is trash. It's remembered very fondly by many people, but I wonder if they remember wonderful things like shots taking 2-3 seconds to register a hit.

The combat and inventory system is fine. The reviews are biased because they're comparing console gameplay to the PC version; obviously with a keyboard you can do so much more. I never played the PC version, only the 360 version of The Witcher 2, and the controls and inventory worked great. Highly recommend. No game breaking glitches. I loved how there are 2 paths/decisions you can choose in the campaign that lead to completely different quests.
The combat definitely has a bit of a learning curve. I remember the very early parts of the game were quite challenging but once I got the hang of it and leveled up a bit it got a lot easier. No game breaking glitches for me. Also, there are a couple of very difficult boss battles, but some of them are optional. I do like how the game is completely different depending on the choices you make. It's not just a simple dialogue difference.

Guess we shouldn't be surprised about Gear being one of the free games, it was inevitable.  Doesn't make it suck any less though.  Most of us played it years ago and I still have a free download code for the game just sitting on my shelf since every copy of Judgement came with one.  They could have at least made it Gears 3.  It's decently old and cheap at this point and many many people have played it but at least the multiplayer is still fun.  Shoot Many Robots looks pretty lackluster but at least I've never played it.

You make a great point about DLC. Gears 2 also has Raam's Shadow, a nice side quest to GoW 1.

Gears 2 and 3 gave me a reason to use the Lancer as a chainsaw as opposed to a weapon you just happen to figure out using in the first game. I also love how the levels aren't all "destroy and advance" and actually use puzzle elements in how you advance. The night level in the first game was nice, but the other games were way more creative with gameplay.

"Normal" in GoW 2 is the same as "Easy" on GoW1 which is why I said it is harder. I feel GoW 1 is the black sheep of the series like Assassin's Creed 1 is to their series. The only difference is Gears 1 is playable and worth trying (unless I'm missing something on Judgement which I haven't played yet).

Yeah Microsoft dropped the ball with putting Gears 1 for free. The fact that Judgement had a code for the game was a selling point, but now that's sorted ruined. I actually would of been really happy with Gears 2 since I never played that dlc level with dom and marcus yet. Guess ill have to pick up a cheap copy in the future in order to do so.

Raam's Shadow is Gears 3, not 2.

Since we get Gears (not a bad game by any means) and that arcade game, I really hope Mass Effect comes up soon.

I've never played the first one (*gasp*) and I'd really like a "full" Shepard, especially before people leave ME 3's multiplayer and I end up with a shitty (shittier than normal) ending.

Man I really hope MS is going to change the program to a PS+ model.  At least then we might get 2-3 games per month worth playing or have been released in the last 2 years.

I rented Gears back in 2008 and had been thinking about buying it for really cheap, but I never got around to it.  Fine with me.

You don't have to touch mp to get the best ending..

They patched those stupid Galactic Readiness points or whatever they're called so you no longer have to play MP to get enough for the "best" ending.

When did they patch it? I finished the game a few months ago and had ~4000 of those points. The MP was surprisingly fun (when I got a good team).

Since Gears 1 never came out here, I'm really interested what we will get this time...Got Shadowrun and Lost Planet 2 instead of Crackdown and Dead Rising 2 the last time...so I bet it will be a mediocre substitute lol

I personally disagree, Gears 2 was one of the games that first got me really hooked on multiplayer in general. But to each his own.

The problem with Gears 1 multiplayer is when people drop-out, there are no bots, thus you can often end up in 3 or 4 on 1 situations, and people will grief you forever to try to boost their stats. Also, with the lobby system, people only really play on 3 or 4 of the maps, thus for players who were late to the party (like myself) it's hard to get the achievement for winning on each map, since the general population won't join a lobby on half the maps. I suppose a TA boosting session could fix that, but it's still annoying. The rotating map list they introduced late in the support of Gears 2 was an improvement for the most part.

Quite a while ago, I think when the Extended Ending released. You have to pretty much do everything to get the highest requirement, but it's possible without playing MP. Before, you had to raise your readiness to like 70-something% even with everything done AND the extra points from playing the first two games.

We're getting Halo Wars instead of Gears of War? Where'd you hear that?

Edit: It's for Germany and Japan. Makes sense since those countries are much more strict about graphic violence.

Will stats still count in a 3 or 4 on 1 situation, or does the lobby only need a minimum number of people (6?) to count toward the Seriously achievement? I came late to the series with Gears 2, and when I went back to try Gears 1 MP, I'd be stuck against full teams and get handily stomped before I could get a feel for the layout of the map, so I figured I'd need to turn to boosting sessions if I wanted any of the MP achievements.

Any idea if the bad net code throughout the series is inherited from the Unreal Engine (which still falls to Epic), or is just a part of the Gears games?

Since I'm from germany...yeah "we" will get that lol...and yeah it's a PITA with all those restrictions you have to import pretty much anything that is too "violent" (Gears 2 and 3 are available now somehow lol and it's not less gory)

You're from Germany and you got almost 100 trades? I didn't know that there were that many CAGs from Germany. Isn't like 99% of the deals here irrelevant to you except for the digital stuff?

I don't know what my trades have to do with this....but since digital stuff IS important to me this site does pretty well for me =P

And sometimes I get Stuff from the U.S. like those Arcade Tokens every year (little coins =P)

Halo Wars is a good substitute, but missing out on Dead Rising 2 sucks.
Yeah it is..and well I didn't miss out...hehe.. have a Girlfriend in Austria and was able to get both Games with a 1 Month Gold Account..

I just meant that since most of us are from the US, not a lot of people are going to ship something to you. But if you're trading Steam games or whatever, that makes sense.

Off-topic but 1) What are your equivalents of Gamestop and Best Buy? 2) Is it really true that Germans like David Hasselhoff? If not, any idea how that perception started?

The lowered EMS requirements came with the Extended Cut DLC, so that would have been June 2012.
According to Xbox.com, that's the last time I played the game and I didn't touch the mp. I got the best ending.

I don't think it was even confirmed that it was impossible without playing mp, you just had to do everything.

I'm not from the US either and I always check CAG for digital sales (mostly Steam and XBL), I don't know about Germany (Italy here!) but we also have Gamestops, but no Best Buy :(

It is much more likely that Sony will scale back PS+ to a more GWG-like model since they are requiring PS+ for online multiplayer.

MS doesn't need to offer more than they do because they sell a colossal number of Gold subscriptions each year anyway.

The problem is not Gears1 is a bad game, which its not: it was great and today its a classic. The problem is they give away a game which was released close to the 360 launch (a year after precisely) when the 360 is close to the end of its lifespan (a year before-ish). It's like giving to an old man a rattle instead of a cane: he will be on his right to tell you "WTF? I'm old but not stupid". They give away a 7 year-old game and they expect people to jump into the xbox none? Its nuts.

Ahh that makes sense..well I DO physcial trades with UK members sometimes sooo...at least that lol, but mostly xbla stuff (and steam stuff recently)

1) Uhm we DO have Gamestop here too...and they are even worse if you're paying with € instead of $ because it's even more of a rip-off

2) No that's a myth lol.....there is a saying that David Hasselhof was involved with the fall of the Berlin Wall (by singing a song)...but nothing about that is true lol...it might be because of that...

Off topic but live is down on xbone and this thing is a giant paperweight. Can't play games offline, can't do amazon video. I thought those would still work.

you cannot access any of your games? I thought they did away with this when they switched gears after the PR backlash? thats awful.

Another month of me owning both Games with Gold games. I think it goes to show that 1) I buy too many games and 2) Microsoft likes to give away games that have a history of being on sale.

There's no way I paid full price for Shoot Many Robots. I bought it with my designated co-co-op buddy and we've had fun with it. To be quite honest I'm okay with MS giving away co-op centric games because now I can actually play some of the games with friends who would have never bought them. My friends and I started Iron Brigade the other day and we've been having fun. I bought that game and the DLC on sale previously but never played them once I heard the campaign was difficult solo and almost requires friends.

Dead Rising 2 was the only game I haven't owned and now that I have an Xbox One with DR3 I have no plans of touching it anytime soon ha. I'm sure that'll be the first GWG game they give away on XB1 ;)

Just like GWG I own most of the good Thanksgiving/Black Friday games. I recommend The Cave if you like adventure games, Bit.Trip Runner 2 because it's insanely fun and addicting and BattleBlock Theater for the amount of content and how fun it is solo and in co-op.

Sorry for the double post but I can't edit on my phone and forgot to ask this before.

Did Wolfenstein 3D get relisted at some point? I think I remember that. I know I bought it at launch since it was my first FPS and I have fond memories and when I go to the sale it shows for me to purchase it. Didn't some people mention that happening with other games like Bully? I traded in my 3 extra 360s to BBY and transfered my save files to my Slim but not the games. I know I can go through my Download History but it's thousands of items long so I'll have to attempt it when I use my PC next. I did the License Transfer too. It's just bugging me.

I think something changed with the new update, most things now, won't say you purchased them, it will list the price, once you select it, it should say to download again.

If it doesn't, definitely try to find it in your History. I wish they would've at least sorted the DH into item types

While I agree with you, I hope it's the PS4 side they scale back on. Or - and this is wishful thinking - they can let us choose two of the three platforms we want content for from our PS+ subscription. I can't imagine even the most diehard of gamers have all three current PlayStation systems.

Oh I see.

I did like 90% of the things from the SP and played quite a bit of MP so I didn't know what the lowered value was.
