You guys are just proving his point you realize.
Were the argument well-constructed and based on fact, perhaps. Instead, it's full of points that desperately [need citation] and base assumptions and broad strokes painted upon the consumer base based on what he's gleamed from the loudest voices. There's far too much "we all know this to be true, don't argue it" in this piece to give any of it value.

I scrolled down and read more drama and see this,

"Besides, why are you so desperate to get the keys during Early Access launch? Especially since you've already played the game, there are reported bugs still being fixed, and you've only paid $0.10 for it." -TheMasquerader

This dev also pulled out the price card.

People bought it in the bundle might try it once. If it is a glitchy mess, they'll never play it again and when people ask about it they'll say it was terrible. Early Access is only planned for about a month anyways. No problem waiting for full version.

Not Steam, but Newegg has Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist Deluxe Edition (Uplay) for $8.49 after promo code EMCPBWA54. Lowest non-glitched price I believe.
EwwPlay key. I'd have GG-slummed it if I was willing to settle for an EwwPlay key.

Re: Puppygames

It's pretty much a long ass rant about how Phil Fish is great, indie devs should be able to say and do whatever they want and fuck you customers, you suck, we hate you and we don't need you (but really we do, we're in denial so let us have this angry bitter rant. JUST GIVE IS THIS ONE THING)
Dude, indie devs are the new rock stars.

It'll all be better when all you pissants realize this and worship them as the walking-gods they are.

How appropriate.

Finally got my Walking Dead Season 2 key from IGN Prime. $7 is right on target and now I get to see if I saved the right files from TWD: Season One. So thanks to everyone that mentioned that deal!

Re: Puppygames. I kind of like the stuff they do, even if it's just for short bursts. Yes, it's simple and retro, but it's well done and has a little bit of depth to it.

I didn't really read the piece as an angry rant, but more of a matter-of-fact look at the state of game distribution for smaller developers. He says customers are worthless, but he seems to be speaking strictly from a financial standpoint; and he later makes the point that customers are the only reason they can exist. The reality is that due to mass volume and low pricepoints, the same level of customer support is just no longer feasible.

TL;DR

Humble ruined everything.

That's a thing now? Oh bundle people don't get keys during early access because they might say bad stuff about the game being unfinished.

First they already long since gave people on Groupees and IGS downloads of the game and presumably an older version at that so if the intenet was to prevent people from being able to judge an unfinished game they failed. If that's a concern then why put your game on early access at all? Also Valve now tags any reviews written during the early access period as early access reviews so that's clearly noted.

Anyway the dev pretty much admitted the real reason he's not giving the keys right now is that the partner he was working with is currently unavailable, that Groupees is being sketchy about communicating about this whole process and that he seems to assume getting and giving the keys is somehow difficult or time consuming and doesn't need the added stress right now.

One thing I do agree with is that for better or worse I think these bundle sites really need to take a more hand holdey approach with these indie devs about this whole key distribution businesses. If they take it seriously enough to write it into their contracts then they can take some time time explain how stuff works to them or at least have a For Dummies FAQ to point them to or something.

Perhaps if he made a little more effort to be concise and clear and a little less to be sensationalistic and provocative that point may have come across better.

Fantastic drop!

Pinball Arcade Season One and Season One Pro packs are 50% off. I guess 21 tables for $15/20 is okay but they should just sell them individually for a dollar each.
I love Pinball, and I have a huge soft spot for many of those very cool tables. I just can't get over the price tag attached to their tables. Either they're really greedy, or they have the worst negotiators known to mankind.

Yeah, I agree. The trollbait got in the way of the point he was trying to make.

I'm tempted. Really tempted. Funhouse and Pin-Bot are two of my all time favorite tables. (edit - I se it's Bride of Pin-Bit - not the original Pin-Bot - Still pretty great)

What are the differences between the standard and Pro packs?

I am getting ready to leave work. These are the games still available. I might not be back on until tomorrow morning. Please just send me a PM and I will respond. Any game left at this time tomorrow I will open up to the lurkers. Thanks for taking these. My list was getting too long to keep up with.

What are the differences between the standard and Pro packs?
From my understanding tables in pro mode offer additional menu options, a free camera for table viewing, some additional dialogue on some tables...basically to create a more realistic experience of owning a table.

In addition to what Neuro said, you get access to the operator menus to configure the machine differently as well as some "pro tips" on the table.

Thanks. Worth 5 bucks extra?

Exactly, it's the epitome of TL;DR. It's a bitchfest fueled by anger and frustration, due to the dev's failures and coming shutdown. It's the equivalent of a toddler's temper tantrum, or a moody teen posting cutting pics and "woe is me" monologues on Facebook. What makes it hilarious what the dev has said about it (read below).

The funny thing is they are locking any thread referring to this in their games forums.

This ones a good one because they claim to have made this kind of game before anyone else. I'm pretty sure tower defense existed long before 2011.
Comedy gold. Allow me to highlight a few gems from the dev.

"It's not a rant, it's an essay."

I feel like he doesn't even know what an essay is. Just for the hell of it...

es·say
noun
ˈesā/
1. a short piece of writing on a particular subject.

Essays are "short" because they're meant to convey a message in a short, pointed manner. I actually had a problem with essays in school, because I would go too in depth on my essays. It would take me too long to complete them, they'd be so full of description and information that by the time I was done, they wouldn't even really be essays.

What the dev wrote is indeed a rant. He's taking out his frustrations on his keyboard and declaring it to the world (or the handful of computer nerds who will actually take the time to read it), and because of that, any point there is within the piece is lost in the maelstrom of incoherent ramblings and written fits of anger. He's a child acting out on what he perceives to be unfair, and [customspoiler=pretending it has nothing to do with his company]"I'm not even discussing Puppygames, or our games, in the article."[/customspoiler], which is hilarious, because you don't need to even mention your company or your games for everyone to know that the article is 100% about your company and your games, which is going under because of the "problem with the industry" that you have gone on a crusade about.

"The fact I'm even bothering to talk to you at all on the Steam forums should be considered remarkable - not because I think I'm so wonderfully important, but because for any developer, it's a total waste of valuable and expensive time which no matter how well-intentioned will never make a return on effort."

In case none of you were aware of this yet, this dev is an asshole. There's a saying in business called "Hug your customers". What does it mean? Pretty obvious, be nice to your customers. When you make your customers happy, and create quality products, they will come back for more. News flash: If you actually make good games, you don't have to put them all in bottom feeder Humble Bundles full of shitty games. The strategy is pretty simple.

Step 1: Make a solid game that shows off your talents as a developer, put it in a cheap bundle, get people playing your game, acquire fans.

Step 2: Be nice to your customers. Show them that not only do you make fun games, you also are a human being and worth supporting.

Step 3: Take your games to the next level and don't devalue them by putting them in dollar tiers of indie bundles. Players who like your games and like you will actually buy your games, as many other devs have proven, and suddenly your customers won't be only with $1 to you, because YOUR games won't be only worth $1.

But no, rather than actually take logical steps that require effort to carry out, this dev would rather blame everyone else and the "industry" for his own failings, and bitch at customers when they speak to him. This last bit is both sad and hilarious, see the comment given from this individual on the Steam forums, and the dev's reply.

Matster said:
Would recommend you not to make such rant posts when you are basically bankrupt and that is a know fact even confirmed yesterday on rockpapershotgun news thread about you closing doors in two months time:http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/08/18/puppygames-battledroid-basingstoke/
Also never disclose information that almost all of your games are making you a loss and no income as you did here in your blog from March 2013: http://www.puppygames.net/blog/?p=1369

Some advice for the future if you survive the shistorm coming - do it like Arcen games did in 2010 when they were also almoust closing down:http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2010/09/love-ai-war-andor-tidalis-we-could.html

Make a friend of your customers not enemies and never answer to any trolling, attack on you or rants in the threads - it does not work it makes everything only worse.

I do own Revenge of the Titans from you but your post on the blog does not make me wan't to buy anything from you at the moment. You try to fix what you are saying at the end of your blog but most of it is extremely anti customer oriented.
Okay, that's a bit harsh, but pretty on point. The dev is flailing at the moment and pulling a lot of moves he shouldn't be. Everything Matster said is right on the money. The dev's reply?

"What I don't need to do, ever, is take advice from you, the customer. We do what we do; you do what you do. We don't tell you how to run your lives and businesses because we don't know anything about them."

And with that, it's not all that surprising that Puppygames is going under. Good luck running a business in the future, Mr. Caspian Prince.

Begin self-important colors:

I don't know about that. He's making a point, that is a statement on the industry and devaluing of indie development (and games as a whole). He also seems to believe this will end well for him, simply because Phil Fish got rich off of idiots - that's a risky play to make, and probably won't end well - but it's his play to make. He wants to be Phil Fish 2.0. Phil Pup.

That said, if he loves the industry so much, then he needs to man the fuck up and stop bitching. Hundreds of thousands of starving artists have come before him and done far worse than him but with FAR better work. Being 'indie' means you take a risk, and give up other career opportunities for control and the slim chance you'll hit it big. It's a calculated risk. What a wonderful world it could be if we could all just sit around all day and do EXACTLY what we loved, with zero risk, and make it rich. So just like Phil Fish, he can eat my dick and get a real job if he doesn't like where the indie scene and game industry are - no ONE is forcing him to stay, a coder can get a good job any day.

End self-important colors:

Already deleted. I had responded :(

"OMG, you totally missed the point. It's not a rant, it's an essay. And it's not at all about puppy games even though it was posted by a puppy games dev on the puppy games site. And he wasn't insulting puppy game customers, he was insulting all customers everywhere. And it's gone viral so it's a success.

All that isn't hard to understand. Plus he clearly said even though he insulted customers puppy games still needs their money to buy curry.

On a serious note, what an incredibly short-sighted and desperate last gasp from puppy games! Apparently a few trolls riled up the devs feathers enough so that he made the logical conclusion to fight trolling with trolling. So he drops this inflammatory generalization of the gaming industry in hopes of becoming Phil Fish and having the white knight trolls buy puppy games so they can live one more year and make a new version of pac man or atari ET or pong.

Meanwhile, last I checked there are plenty of indie devs making money with customers willing to pay more than $1 for their games who are too busy making their next good game to devote any time to transparent attempts at internet celebrity. I think this is just a reflection of lazy devs who would rather blame the industry for their failures than self-reflect and realize maybe they need to make different or better games or just retire altogether and work for someone else."

Was really hoping to rustle some jimmies :(

It's not on Steam yet. The description says buyers will get one when the game is available.
Yeah, I realize this, but considering this is how the games are starting out I'm sure they're only even more likely to get bundled again once they do get on Steam.

Thanks to FFWRX for the awesome giveaways! Snagged some great freebies - first bundle fodder I've found worth spodering in a while.

I take a break and...woah. Crazy cluster -

Here's a funny thing about the art of game development: The Prince mentioned in his blog that he perceives his customers "worthless"...and yet the gamers consider the games "worthless". I gotta feel for the people who work the company putting a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into projects but if the devs cannot adapt to make the products work for them and the customers then no one will buy the game unless it's a dollar or less. It seems both parties perceive each other as "worthless."

Short version of observations: I don't feel the loooooove baby!!!!

I haven't played the games so I'd rather not take sides.

They did. One of the first one I remember playing was in around 2004 with some guildmates from FFXI. It was a Warcraft III map. I remember one of the units was like a cross dresser who threw babies.

My first tower defense game was Rampart on the NES.
