Lots of those comments are pretty vile. That said, not sure what the dev expected when they dove into it with a glib and kinda unprofessional tone.
They probably didn't expect to get inundated with anti-semetic taunts and death threats (Warning: The examples posted are bad). Nor should they have. Nothing that they did warranted this kind of repulsive behavior. It will never stop boggling my mind that people lose their shit to this degree over fucking video games.

Unless all the various stuff is shopped, the dev went around sowing wind and ended up reaping the whirlwind.
Trolling trolls never ends well.
The dev's comments basically ensured I'd be reflexively against them, and yet I'm not.

Don't know about you guys, but when a videogame becomes exclusive to a platform I don't use or like, my natural reaction also involves suggesting suicide and using racial slurs.

Just me?

Regarding Humble Monthly headliners...

I went back and looked, and the last headliner that I actually played AFTER getting the bundle (owned a couple already) was August 2018: Pillars of Eternity. I often like the headliners but I end up actually playing the reveals.

Isn't this the arena survival game that died in 2015 that only angry cholos like Fox still play? The one that was inferior to The Culling, then PUBG, and now Apex Legends, among many others in the genre? What the hell is it doing in a tier anything above Free?
You're thinking H1Z1.

This is the ARMA II mod that became a standalone that's been in early access for like 10 years.

I don't think it had to do with the Epic games stuff alone, most of the "damage" came from the condescending tone from the dev when announcing it, after that it was discovered that the dev was a prick to the people, censoring the games subreddit (they deleted threads, locked down the subreddit), banning people on discord just for asking about the epic deal or being a douche with their fans, for example this compilation: https://puu.sh/E23Ka/0c33be4a05.jpg

Dayz standalone was released in last december, still it didn't change so much from the early access.

Yup. That would be the good guy in this situation.

A youtuber finds some hidden but public marketing stuff (shown on Twitch streams), publishes it and then gets TakeTwo Interactive PI's asking him questions at his house? It seems that anything Epic touches leads to nonsense.

honestly im shocked there are people who DON'T respond that way, it's completely rational

Yup. That would be the good guy in this situation.
Yup indeed. The only real douche-itude from the dev is the response to the guy talking about his wife. Maybe the currency question as well, but that's not his fault either.

Other than that, the people going off on this are, as stated, not really the target audience of a cutesy Animal Crossing-like game developed by two people. Super high chances less than 1% had even heard of the game prior to being filled with all the rage in the universe.

But yeah, those stupid devs are a bunch of ****** ****** ***** and need to stop living, of course.

Who knew there were downsides to taking Tim Sweeney's graft?

Correction: It's pretty good if you don't already own most of the games... Otherwise, meh.

How desensitized to this shit do you have to be to feel this interaction is justified?

Ooblets guy: "We're taking our talents to Epic! Also, people who get mad about this are probably toxic gamers anyway loooool."

People that somehow exist and are definitely not at all living up to claims of toxicity: "How could you do this to me?!!? How can you say those things?! fuck you, fuck your game I've never heard of, and please die REEEEEEEE!!"

The response is correct, just disproportionate.

Right, because they were lining up already to play fuck in' Ooblets on Steam and Steam alone. It's this year's must-play title that everyone had on their radars! No wonder they're so upset.

People can be horrible to each other. Especially people that sit behind their keyboards all day and don't have any meaningful relationships. They lack empathy.

This is the part where I get personally offended by that characterization and threaten sexual assault, right?
People are terrible man. Yesterday I wanted to get out of my car and punch people that refused to stop for an emergency vehicle. It's 8pm. The ambulance is trying to get to the hospital but these people can't be inconvenienced to wait 30s longer to shove McDonald's into their faces.

Sorry, he could have gotten his payday from Epic, and don't get me wrong his deal was great and he SHOULD have taken it, without shitting on people who want his game on Steam. You always have a choice to be polite and he was to first one to decide that wasn't an option.

Personally, and maybe I'm too cynical or jaded, but I feel he went this route to get extra press and more word out on his games existence because before he threw the shit into the fan I hadn't ever heard of his game.

Definitely a possibility considering how fast Epic/Tim Sweeney released a statement on the matter. Is it time to start the 'false flag' accusations? Wouldn't put it past Sweeney to have people attack a developer in an over-the-top manner to gin up more publicity.

It's not that, it's the condescending attitude the guy copped. It's like the Puppygames developer's infamous blog post from years ago:

https://www.puppygames.net/blog/?p=1574

Ultimately, this Ooblets guy being attacked will probably net him more sales. Without Sweeney and all this publicity this shit would have been bundle fodder in no time. And, as a CAG, you should support the idea of games being funneled into bundles ASAP!

Honestly, when I first heard of this, I saw the garbo on the Steam forums, then the racist crap, and then read their announcement blog post. Basically everything backwards.

After reading that blog post, I looked for the original announcement post that was being labeled as condescending and the instigation for all this. Surely, it must have been pretty bad for all this to happen. After searching for a bit, I resigned myself to the fact that the blog I already read was the one that caused all the reaction, and that's when I realized once again that the internet is stupid.

Anyway, I've said my pieces. Back to the pizza discussion.

Same way I discovered all this stuff lol. Internet is way worse than I thought honestly.

If that's your take after reading the comments I'm afraid you're exactly what I'm talking about in terms of the dev looking like the good guy.

Only one repeat for me. Almost all of the bundled ones were in bundles or bundle tiers I decided to pass on.

Impressive feat for a bundle these days.

Every six weeks I leave the bathroom and think to myself, "maybe now is the time to leave the bathroom and reintegrate myself into society."

*reads last few pages*

Back to the toilet then.

Their initial blog post was condescending. I'm not saying it warranted the insane responses it received. It didn't. But the developer was being a bit of a douche. I'm not going to not call this guy out because other people were morons in responding to him.

But maybe I'm predisposed against whiny developers who have a chip on their shoulder against consumers in the industry they work in -- it's very Phil Fish-ian. Or, for a better pop culture analogy, they are like Basil Fawlty. He would be great running a hotel if it weren't for all those horrible guests he has to deal with...

Nah, I think you're overestimating Basil's level of competence in general terms. Sure, he excels at being rude and hypercritical, which is why he'd make an awesome CAG, but other aspects of the hotelier occupation--not so much.

I do like the term "Phil Fish-ian," but I think to make it a proper adjective, we should go with this spelling: philfishian.

Ding ding

Exactly.

yes it absolutely is, climate change and human rights abuses are important but we need to keep things in perspective here

Man, some of you guys are delusional.  It makes no sense for the devs of Oblongs to open themselves up to abuse and threats for "views."  His own explanation makes way more sense - that's just how he talks, in a sarcastic way, and it had never been a problem with the backers AKA the people who actually are paying for the game.

I never heard of the game before the Epic announcement and I'm sure no one here or any of the racist/insane ragers online had or even care.  It's all this dumb outrage against Epic because entitled whiny gamers don't get what they want.  That's why I've been trolling everyone who whines about Epic exclusives, because this is the type of dumb shit it breeds.  When it's directed at some big corporation it's easier to ignore or brush off, but when two people are getting the abuse directly then it's like "oh, maybe we should have done something against this earlier."

If you really want to play a game, buy it wherever it is, play it, that's that.  If you hate Epic, wait a year or whatever.  If it's never coming to Steam then don't play it or bootleg it.  It's not the end of the world, it's fucking video game.

So next week another former Humble Monthly headliner, Mutant Year Zero, is being given away on EGS. At this rate, given that I don't have it on Steam already from that really old monthly, I hope Stardew Valley appears at some point.

On one hand, I'm not sure why this would escalate to death threats to the developers, but hey, that's just me.

On the other hand, the devs seem naive at best and somewhat douchey at worst.

On the third hand, if I really wanted to play Pooplets, I would buy it, even if dumas BossKey_Fox hosted it on his own gaming platform.

On the fourth hand, I still dislike Epic (or maybe it's really Epic's Immenently Punchable Face, Tim Swarthy), but I will gladly take their freebees.

On the fifth hand, "Be Part of the Problem AND the Solution" -- Mahatma Ghandi
