Well I traded my beautiful PRS SE 245 for a Schecter Solo-6 Custom, and couldn't be happier with it.
Also, I traded a few DVD's for a beater Aria II Pro Frankenstrat. I put a $35 Dragonfire Preloaded pickguard in it and it sounds killer.
I would say your best bet is to buy a prewired harness unless you just want to do it yourself. I recommend Martin Six String Custom. High quality stuff, and great customer service. They aslo sell just the parts and you put it together. There are a few other sites like that if you want them.
Well the seymourduncan website has clips of all their pickups and also has recommendations for your guitar depending on genre you are playing and gutiar materials.

Coil-tapping is nice if you play a variety of music, but if you play metal like me, you wont use it much.
If you can solder, you can make any 4-conductor wired humbucker coil-split. All you have to do is replace the tone pot(s) with a push/pull pot and follow a wiring diagram. Not hard at all...
