it's not repetitive, there are new surprises in each level. Plus, lots of new moves that you acquire. Plus, a dynamic difficulty setting that keeps you on your toes. Demons can randomly appear too. And frankly, most higher profile games are much more repetitive

God Hand is not mediocre. Great combat system, bizarre and funny atmosphere and cutscenes, and it's challenging. It also looks, sounds and feels like an arcade beat'em up which gives it a nice nostalgic quality. It's from Capcom's Clover Studios. They have NEVER released a bad game, though...

Interesting thing about Alien Hominid is that you can appreciate it even if you don't like Metal Slug or Contra. That mini-game is a fun little puzzle/platformer and has many levels. You could get the game for that alone and get your money's worth
