07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone can confirm Metroid Prime: Hunters today, I'll snag that when I'm over there picking up DVDs today. If it's there.

Hell, as long as I'm buying other stuff I'll have it checked at the register.

Edit: Hmm... BFII guides are at a further Best Buy according to the store locator, I suppose I'm about due for a trip down there, particularly if MP: H is gone from my local store. :D

I'll try my local Best Buy but they probably pulled them already... I can either buy them or trade some guides I have left.
 
Wow, I think this is the first drop in a long time that I haven't had any interest in going to. The only thing I might have been interested in would be Metroid, but I have NEVER been able to get a DS guide at any best buy drop. Oh well, here's hoping to good stuff the next drop.

Oh, and what the heck is goin on with GS/EB? Other than Indigo Prophecy, I don't think there have been ANY drops all summer. Here's hopin for a giant drop soon.
 
Oh damn. I can't get out until 12:30. But I want like, four of these guides.. I know there're a couple at the Best Buy that's usually good to me, but there are a whole bunch of the MP:H guides (at least) at the one that always pulls them.

It works out for me, actually, I was gonna go pick up StarFox today or tomorrow and I needed to go and get a GGC anyway.

While I'm posting, I managed to find a few old guides, most are up for trade for other PSX/N64 guides, CML...

Picked up TC Advanced Warfighter at the Cary, NC location. It is up for trade.

I found a few of the guides. The 2 BB's I went to said they have to pull them now and since I found them before they pulled them they gave them to me.
 
Snagged Metroid Prime: Hunters. Two remaining. They were stuffed behind the only NSMB guide, so they were missed. Everything else was pulled.
 
Local Saint Petersburg Best Buy pulled all the guides, as usual.

All I need is Metroid Prime Hunters and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter so CML or I can just buy them straight up.
 
The Most Hated BB had nothing.... I truly hate that one store. Only PC guides don't get pulled usually. But, the good ones? I swear they pull them weeks in advance because they just plain suck.
 
Damnit! My usual Best Buy where I can find loads of guides had none of the guides! I know I saw a couple of them there a week or so ago so they must have started pulling them.

The Best Buy that usually pulls them actually had 2 MP:H's and 3 GR:AW's on the shelves.. but someone must have seen me wandering around with an armful of guides because the cashier got a call as I was checking out and then checked the prices on the guides and took them away =/

So if anyone found GR:AW or MP:H guides, check my list for wants or PM me your price.

Yup same here, the local BB that usually has all the guides...didn't have the guides. Corporate must really be enforcing the "pull all penny guides!!!" policy. I think the days of penny guides at BB is pretty much over, maybe you'll still be able to find one or two guides hidden in between stacks of books that haven't been marked down, but as for walking out the door with two copies of every guide that dropped...fuhgeddaboudit

Not sure when, but the guy working printed an onhand penny list for me and these were on it. There were a few more PC guides but I can't remember what they were. He wouldn't let me keep the list though:cry:

I picked up the new X-men, Sims 2, Call of Duty 2, Mortal komabat Shaolin Monk guides at best buy today. They are all up for trade. I'm interested in trading for a Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter guide and possibly some others. If interested PM me your lists. Thanks.

Good to know. I'll have to pick a few of those up. And as for paying full retail, I haven't done it in years, but I might do it for the new Disgaea 2 guide... decisions decisions.
 
I found an extra Star Wars Battlefront II guide, and Metroid Prime Hunters guide.

I'm looking for a Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfare guide, hopefully in new condition.

Only managed to grab some Star Wars Battlefront II guides as they were in the PC section and not with the rest of the guides.

I think it all depends on where you live. While I was visiting family in the DFW(Tx) during the last $.01 drop, most BB had $.01 signs posted.
 
Damn-it. My b/f checked 3 different BB's and all were pulled. His friend there wasn't working, so he couldn't get them. He did find an old Call of Duty 2 guide and some old Auto Assault guides, but he left them.
 
Nothing at my two local BB's. They had the shelf tags for the Sims 2 and MP: Hunters still up but blank spaces where the guides should be. dammit.

Only thing that made me feel better was my local new and used music store had all their used guides marked down to 99 cents so picked up several older guides I didn't have.
 
I struck out as well at several stores. I noticed even EB cut back on the guides they have. I did find a store with a ton of copies of Need for Speed Most Wanted guides, as if anyone wanted them.
 
I too checked two local Best Buy locations to find nothing, zilch, nada. I believe the clerks must have pulled what little the stores had to begin with because I used to almost always find at least one or two beat-up guides sitting around. :(

Yeah there are still going to be a few isolated BBs here and there that don't pull the guides or just ignore emails telling them to do so, but I think at this point judging from all the people who have reported in saying they couldn't find any guides, the majority of BBs are pulling them as soon as they are pennied out.
 
I had almost no trouble finding guides this time. For the first time in about 3 drops I actually got something. I do however need a Battlefront II. Have Metroid Hunters and Ghost Recon for anyone interetesed. And if you have something else from my want list in my sig, let me know.

Ugh, there were a dozen of copies of Sims 2 and Metroid Prime: Hunters, and maybe 20 Xmen: Last Stand, and I go earlier today and there wasn't anything. My BB usually has lots of penny guides, especially during the FFIV & PDZ drop; I depleted their inventory after the long course of a week and a half after everyone who went in had a fair shot. Today, I walk out empty-handed...

GS/EB are always douchebags when it comes to penny guides. I've had 0% success.

The X-men one I found is called "X-Men: The Offical Game" (BradyGames)

i didn't bother checking coz my BB already pulled out those guides like several weeks ago.

even if priced at full, you'll never find a decent one, unless its a PC game guide.
 
Got lucky today.

Went to the BB on my way home, because I knew they had all of those guides that just got marked down.

In fact, I saw them on the shelf on Sunday.

So, I went today after work, and they were all GONE!

I was pissed, but when a worker asked me if she could help with anything, I asked if she knew if those guides were pulled.

She said that she didn't, but would go check in the back. After a few minutes, she returned with one of each of the following:

Sims 2
X-Men III (The Movie)
Star Wars Battlefront II
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
Metroid Prime: Hunters

All new, in near perfect condition.

It paid to be nice, and after a nickel, I was on my way!

Just had to share.

I believe one of the other BBs in my area may have more GR:AW guides, so I'll check tomorrow.

this may be off-topic but I was wondering if anyone know any websites or stores that sell Strategy Guide-sized transparent book covers.

The problems with collecting strategy guides is that no matter how well I tried to preserve them sooner or later they'll begin to have hinges and tears, very frustrating especially with those rare guides.

Any help's appreciated, thanks~
 
Looking for just Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, will trade multiple guides for it or pay $$$, let me know!

I went to the Avon (Indianapolis) Best Buy at noon the first day of the drop and they were already pulled (or a greedy person grabbed them all). I did see at Sims 2 guide but wasn't really interested in it or sure if it was the right guide. I had been there the day before and there were several Metroid Prime Hunters guides left so they were probably pulled that night or early in the morning. I'm hoping one might pop back up again like happened with Dragon Quest VIII.
 
K sry but i really dont want to read this whole 72 pages to find an answer, and search doesnt really help me. Where in most stores are the .01 guides? I havent found any. And a 2nd question, are they usually marked at .01 or do they just ring up at .01?
