UGh.....now I have to try and return my Best Buy preorder...such a hassle going to multiple stores. Although, with Best Buy silver, I have 60 days to pricematch....odds are the 3D version will be cheap, correctt?
Supposedly target is going to have it for 19.99 because the regular blu ray version does not have everything advertised in the ad.
I saw that however from what I read(correct me it I'm wrong) this is a store by store basis so not every one can do this. Also since this is the Target edition BestBuy does not have to price match it.

I don't think so. It even showed 19.99 on their website today, which is now sold out. All stores will give it to you for $19.99, I wouldn't worry about it. But, there are few copies at the stores. I went in at 9 am and they only had three copies left. :bouncy:

Not sure if this is the right thread to ask or not, but I'm looking to upgrade to a new TV within 3-6months. Definitely going LED but possibly looking into 3D as well. I've heard a lot of feedback on passive vs active 3D...are both still pretty much around or is one becoming the norm? Passive 3D is like the 3D glasses from movie theaters...right?

Yes, the passive 3D glasses are the same as movie theater glasses.

I can't say whether passive is becoming the norm or not, but I have read plenty of people who prefer it to active (which is what I have; and I like it).

Luckily, they are giving rainchecks. I meant to go out this morning and pick one up, but didn't make it until tonight and the nearest with them in stock is 20 miles away. Guy offered me a raincheck and I gladly accepted it.

Both are still around. Both are comparable, but I still feel that active 3d has the edge in picture quality. Also if you are a gamer only the active 3d can do the simulview. If you have the money you could get a passive 3d 4K display and the 3d picture will still be 1080p which is the same that active can output.

Most of them are LED edge-lit sets, which replaced the CCFL lighting assembly with LEDs.

Once you get up into the upper models of some vendors (Samsung E9000, if I remember correctly as one), you have it go to LED backlighting which lights up the LCD display from the back and not the edge. You get better color display, better black levels and brighter display with a LED backlit set. They're always the top-tier of LCD TV vendors' sets and carry a price to match. LG 55LM9600, Sony HX929 and HX950 are the only ones I can think of off-hand, though they're in the $3K and up ranges.

I have a backlit 2D set with my LG 55LE8500, and it's a damned good set, though it wasn't cheap. Well worth it to me, though.

Thanks for the tip guys, don't have a big budget, hoping to spend under $800 for a 42" set...which might not allow me to get 3D but if I can get it around there or for a little more I'd definitely consider it.

I currently have a SHARP 42" LCD and it outputs so much heat, I have it in a small room and you can definitely feel the warmth which is why I want to go LED...they are way cooler temp right?

As for backlit LED that sounds awesome, but beyond my budget for now :whistle2:(

Definitely cooler. I had a 42" samsung plasma that heated my entire room, have a 55" 3D Sony LED and you can't feel anything.

You should really go to a brick and mortar store and try out both. Buying a new tv that you're going to have for a while, really should take a lot of research, with your eyes in person. The AVSForum is the best place to find info on tv's, btw. You can learn anything you want from there.

But definitely go to Best Buy or somewhere similar and try out the passive vs. active. Personally, my active setup on my Optoma looks twice as good as any dlp theater around me.

LP, how old are your kids now? That, and the active shutter headaches, were two of the considerations that got me reconsider passive (as you may remember I was intitally very down on the passive tech because of the on paper resolution difference, until I tried it in a home setting vs passive).

The 3D, would mainly be for me. My kid is five and I'm not cool with him watching 3D stuff. So for you with passive it meant less or no headaches? That might be my deciding factor that i hadn't considered as i tend to get headaches/migraine.

You are less likely to get headaches with passive.

Also, regarding the children: The cost of broken of the glasses is also a consideration for many parents. My Sammy active glasses were expensive as hell, although the cost for those has dropped. However, the RealD ones (and even the LG variety packs) are easily had for less than $2 a pair. I don't encourage my kid to be careless with them, but when somebody sits/steps on a pair it's no great loss.

FWIW: I don't have a problem with my 6 y.o. watching one passive 3D movie month or so. We watched some of the Olympics in 3D as well, but we do limit it to that family movie night event. You can also buy the "2D" polarized glasses for kids and adults that don't like 3d.

For those not watching SD: Amazon had Thor 3d and Captain America 3D for $19 again.

So I picked up that 60" Panny 3d Plasma from bestbuy (tcp60gt50). I already have a large amount of blurays (incl. Capt. America, Thor) and have only 3 3d movies (Tron, John Carter, and Avengers)

I was wondering if any one thinks it worth it to scoop up the 3d verisions of Capt. and Thor today since they are on sale for 19.99? I hate rebuying, but want stuff to show off the 3d!

Those are not movies to show off 3D both are meh. Resident Evil Afterlife, Harold and Kumar Christmas, Legend of the Guardian, Hugo, and the Journey Films are show off films.

For those who prefer depth, Titanic, Avatar, Cars, Lion King, Ice Age, and the Toy Story Films are all great 3D and just good films. I don't know how many of these you can get cheap, but with the Trade and Save coming back if you are looking to add some 3D films these are at the top of the list IMO.

Yeah, not worth it if you already own the 2d versions. Capt has the better 3d of the two though. Some scenes looks verry good in 3d but most do not.

Personally, I'll rebuy a 3D version even if I hear it's somewhat lackluster as long as I feel I can get a decent amount of money from selling the 2D version I already own on half.com or elsewhere.
I use this site as part of my decision making process/upgrade. (unless its uber cheap)

Just because it's converted doesn't mean the 3d is crap so I wouldn't follow that. For example Alice in Wonderland, Underworld, Titanic, the Avengers, etc. all have very good 3d conversions.

I agree that Cap and Thor and not "show off" movies. But after a little while, you'll care less about the show-off-ness of the movies and then it will come down to whether you like 3D or not.

If you're like me, if it's available in 3D, you won't want to watch it in 2D.

I think the 3D adds to Cap and Thor and I'm glad I have the 3D versions of those movies to watch.

I agree. Just got done watching both in 3D and though the 3D isn't eye popping, it does add to the movie experience.

Strike Underworld from that list; it was filmed in 3D. I agree, though, Titanic looks as good as most authentic 3D films. Avengers comes close.

I agree--just because something is post-converted doesn't mean it's necessarily good or bad, just like something that's shot in 3D isn't necessarily going to be great. It all depends how it's done! I've enjoyed some post-converted films more than some native films where the 3D was hardly used/utilized.

For those of you who enjoy "pop-out" effects, IMAX Under the Sea 3D was loaded with it. Groupon recently had it for $9 shipped before coupons.

I usually don't enjoy that effect as it ruins the immersiveness of most films for me (to the level of Brechtian alienation), but I really liked it in a nature doc' and am planning on picking up more of these.

It's got its flaws, some occasional artifacts and Jim Carrey would make a better narrator doing a Jacques Cousteau impersonation than playing it straight. However, despite it being a short 41 minutes the disk shows off the technology fantastically.

Reviews of these 3D doc's are hit and miss, anyone have recommendations other than that and the Grand Canyon one?

Grand Canyon is exceptional. I think it is the very best 3D Imax documentary. Just gorgeous.
Tahiti Ultimate Wave is also very, very good. Good way to show off the 3D.
Another is Hubble. Maybe not the most pants-pooping 3D of the three, but I found it was the most interesting content-wise.

I think all three of these are superior to Under the Sea.

Fwiw, I asked amazon to match Frys 27.99 Prometheus 3D but they said no...

Wonder if they would do Avatar...

^^ he is talking about the one that came with panasonic players about a year ago which I would rather own, than this bare-bones version.

The bundled Avatar is extended? Thought it was just the original, unless they released a different bundled version in 2011.

First they came out a barebones version of JUST the movie itself in 3D from the Panasonic 3D bluray players. Then they came out the Theatrical version with special features in public. Then they came out with the Extended Edition of the movie. Now they coming out the 3D version of the theatrical version. So, im very sure they will come out a 3D version of the Extended Edition.

They may bring out an EE of the 3D version, though I don't think we'd see it until Avatar 2 releases, which will be in 2014, I think.

Great! Canceled and re-ordered. Not sure if I would have got credit or the price would have lowered on purchase. It was still showing as 29.95.

Panasonic version is just the theatrical... I don't know where the idea that it's extended could have come from, but it's not true.

I was all ready to get Prometheus from Amazon for $25 but then I noticed Fox is going out of their way to label the set as the "Theatrical Cut." Makes me think they'll double dip soon enough.
