Please take this in the lighthearted tone in which it was intended.
No, I got the joke.....

I can only buy 3 of the SEGA classics, which should I pick up?
Note: I haven't played any of them. (Pretty sure Sonic is a must though).
While I'd say it's still probably the best, or close to the best, option on offer here, Sonic is actually optional, since Sonic 2 (which is much better) will be getting the treatment soon. Same with Streets of Rage--while a good game, the much superior SoR2 is part of the next batch of these.

If you like side scrolling action platformers, Shinobi 3 is pretty good; and Space Harrier and Galaxy Force II are excellent on rails arcade shooters, and both do a great job emulating the arcade experience, if you're into that. Fair warning, though: they're both very reliant on twitch reflexes. Ecco's not a bad choice--it's an interesting ride that there still aren't a lot of analogues for even today--, though it suffers from some overly fiddly sections. Super Hang-on is an old school checkpoint racer, but it's pretty short; get it only if you know you like those kinds of games.

Don't get Altered Beast. Just don't.

Continuing with Sega’s excellent and apparently rather successful 3D Classic remasters for 3DS, we’ll be getting new 3D versions of Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2 and Gunstar Heroes.

The plan is to release each of the games across July, August and September respectively. Prior to that we’ll also be finally getting Fantasy Zone 2 and Thunder Blade in April and May.

Why is Galaxy Force 2 so darn big? Like close to 1 GB , all the of the other 3d classics downloaded were 1/5 of that I think. Worth making space for????

I just got it when the sale started, and I hadn't played GF2 since it was in the arcade, and I must say, it is pretty bad ass. The 3D is sick, and if no other reason than to show off the 3DS capabilities, it's worth the price of admission.

Shinobi 3 is super solid, and probably the best "game" of the bunch. Most of these titles are arcade games, so they aren't real deep in gameplay, just enough to get the quarters from the end user. SEGA did a great job updating all these titles for portable use, but Sonic and Shinobi are different games than Space Harrier of GF2.

Out of the games on sale, I would say to someone get Shinobi, and GF2 for sure, then Sonic, Streets of Rage, Super Hang-On or Space Harrier depending on your preference. I personally enjoy Space Harrier more than GF2, but that games just shines on the 3DS, so that is a must buy IMO.

Outrun is probably the best 3D game so far, but that's not on sale, but worth the 6 bucks if you have it. I just grabbed Altered Beast earlier today, but I really didn't want it all that much, but I said, what the hell. I like to support SEGA, and these games are all love letters to fans.

M2 recreated their PS2 port of Galaxy Force 2 for the 3DS. The other Sega 3D Classics are more or less based on the original versions of the games.

I ended up picking up Sonic 3D (as well as the Genesis collection for Vita) after reading your recommendations.  Not bad.  My expectations were probably a little high after how it was built up, but it's still pretty cool.

Ok, now that makes sense! Thanks for the update. I'll move some space and prepare for the giant download.

Is it too much to ask those guys to do a 3D Shining Force??   Talk about a day one buy!

If we all keep buying these great ports, who knows what they may do further down the line. It's all about showing SEGA there's a market for games like this, and as long as we keep buying what they offer, we may start to see bigger and better games given this treatment.

I bought all of the $3 sale offerings even though I had all of the games already in some form. I will probably buy Outrun at some point too if only to prove to Sega that their franchises still have devoted fans.

Yes, I think I"ll do the same even if I don't care personally for Sonic or Echo, or hell if you can sell me on these 2, even better!

These re-do's have a TON of work and love put into them and support needs to be given here. Hope Sega and Nintendo gets the point.

Man, after playing Shinobi III and Sonic, I realized Nintendo didn't do jack with those overpriced VC games. Sega deserves my money with these 3d classics. I'm planning to buy Gunstar heroes and Outrun cause they really put some effort on this.

Outrun is top shelf, no question. I bought it full price when it was released. Yeah, "N" can kiss my ***! When I can get games of this quality for 3-6 bucks, and "N" is charging $5 for Urban Champion 3D, they should be taken out back and shot. LOL

SEGA deserves our funds and then some, they really did go above and beyond with these titles.

Kind of thinking about Space Harrier or Galaxy Force 2 but neither particularly grabs me so I guess I'll sit on the rest of the credit after buying Shinobi and Ecco.

GF2 is a visual tour de force, and is just about the best way to show off the 3D of the 3DS. Space harrier is about the most solid arcade game SEGA has released(outrun is probably the best). Both games are rail shooters, and if neither is your cup of tea, passing is probably the way to go.

I meant to buy a handful of the Sega games that were on sale. I went to bed last night early and forgot, and then forgot this morning. Oh well.

I've never played a Phoenix Wright game but I keep hearing good things. Where's a good place to start and what does it play like?
Start with the trilogy. They're adventure games set around a series of court cases, so you talk to people, gather evidence, and try to solve the case.

So they're like the classic point-and-click games of yore? If so, I'll probably use some rewards certs to pick up some eshop credit for it.

I wouldn't really say point and click, they are both similar but very different. Look up some videos on youtube of the first game, and you'll see what it's like. I love both styles of games, but just because a person likes one, doesn't mean he/she will enjoy the other.

I ended up downloading the demo for dual destinies. It reminds me a lot of LA Noire with all of the "use the clues during questioning" and trying to discern fact from fiction. Considering this was the only aspect I liked about LA Noire, I think I might like this. It has a certain cheesiness that somehow works as part of its charm too. Should I still go with the trilogy first? Which has more bang for the buck or better quality?

Trilogy has a bit more bang for the buck since it is 3 games in 1, though said games are over 10 years old at this point. However, Dual Destinies has way better graphics, some great character interaction, anime cutscenes (though no subtitles), fun gameplay elements, and a kickass story.

Think of it this way. The Trilogy pack gets you Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World. DD gets you Super Mario 3D Land.

Don't worry about getting lost. Each and every game in the series will tell you any relevant info either via Phoenix's internal thoughts or via flashback.

And the technical term for Ace Attorney's game style is Visual Novel. You're essentially performing a mystery novel.

Here is a quick review of DD.

It's really a great series and one of the best franchises from any of the big publishers. I first played the original DS demo at E3 years ago, and instantly fell in love with the game. Sadly, Capcom has fallen on hard times, and their business decisions have been ass lately, so who knows if will see the latest version or not in the states, but you have tons of great games to play if your interested. There are 5 main games, 3 spin off titles(one is fan translated only, but easy enough to play), and the newest one due to release soon in Japan.

Don't get to attached to DD, because even though all the games play the same, DD looks the best, and may hard to play the first titles after having looked at the latest and best version graphically. These games are about story, so that shouldn't be a big issue, but some gamers have issues in that department.

Thanks for the opinions. I ended up downloading the trilogy. If I can get through it before the 16th and enjoy them, I might end up buying Dual Destinies while it's still on sale.

Each game has 4-5 episodes, and each one normally gets bigger and longer. So episode one is kind of the tutorial level, and then the game really starts on episode 2. You'll for sure know by the end of episode 2 if it's you ball of wax or not. The later episodes and games just change characters, story and twist and turns, but they are all pretty much the same in regards to gameplay.

The Ace Attorney games are pretty much the video game equivalent of Perry Mason movies. The stories, characters, and twists change, but the base format is pretty much the same.

Forgot to mention that there are a few things to keep in mind regarding the Ace Attorney universe.

1) The first game was originally released in the early 00's for the GBA and takes place in 2016.

2) Technology is basically super advanced versions of 90's era technology.

3) In the US version, anti-immigrant laws and sentiment were never things, so Japanese culture was allowed to mingle in American culture.

4) The system of law practiced here is heavily based on the Japanese court system, not the American one. While the terms have slightly different meanings in the game, the base core of the court system is very faithful to how Japanese courts were at the time (and kinda still are today).
