US Press Release
REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo of America today announced plans to drop the suggested retail price of its portable Nintendo 3DS™system to $169.99 in the United States, as new games based on some of the world’s most beloved video game franchises head to the system. The new price, down from the suggested launch price of $249.99 and effective Aug. 12, makes an outstanding value even better and sets up a strong holiday season for the system.

“For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games.”

Nintendo 3DS has the strongest software lineup of any video game system this holiday season and the new price now opens up the glasses-free 3D experience to many more consumers. Building on the popularity of The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, which launched June 19, the upcoming game calendar is a Who’s Who of iconic video game franchises. Star Fox 64™ 3D arrives on Sept. 9, followed by Super Mario™ 3D Land in November, Mario Kart™ 7 in December and Kid Icarus™: Uprising during the holiday season. In addition to great games, Nintendo 3DS has a host of attractive features* that make it the must-have video game system this season:

The new Nintendo Video™ service automatically delivers short 3D videos from the worlds of music, comedy, animation and Hollywood.A free application allows Netflix members with unlimited streaming plans to instantly watch TV episodes and movies streaming from Netflix.

The Nintendo eShop is a digital store for Nintendo 3DS owners that provides access to a wide variety of downloadable content, such as original 3D software, classic games that have been re-mastered in 3D called 3D Classics, Game Boy™ and Game Boy Color “Virtual Console” games in their original 2D glory, and more than 350 Nintendo DSiWare™ games. Visitors can also view video game trailers, screen shots and product information for games, including those available at retail locations.

Since Nintendo 3DS launched in the United States on March 27, more than 830,000 people in the U.S. alone have purchased one to enjoy 3D visuals without the need for special glasses. These Nintendo 3DS owners represent some of Nintendo’s most loyal customers, and Nintendo is rewarding them for getting in on the action early with 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop.

These free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11. These users will automatically be registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. The program contains two elements:

Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

More details about this program will be announced in the future.

Psst. I'm surprised anyone could miss the obvious sarcasm. Hint: Is this thread about the 3DS price drop or politics?

Well I went ahead and purchased Cosmo Black 3DS. Like many here, I got a confirmation by a Best Buy employee before purchasing. I'm a bit skeptical about Bestbuy letting all these people price adjust. I think I will go first thing in the morning August 12 before they decide to send a corporate letter refusing price adjustment to consoles.
Yea. I expect a zelda 3ds bundle
Super Mario 3D Land is supposed to be out in November so my guess is it will be included in the Black Friday bundle.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the bundled 3DS is the red one that's already on sale in Japan or *fingers crossed* one of the other unreleased colors like orange or purple.

Oh Super Mario 3D would be an AWESOME bundle! Okay, well it looks like a lot of you guys expect SOME sort of bundle, so I guess I'll be holding off. Maybe they'll do a Zelda one with a gold 3DS like the DS Lite bundle they had a few years ago.

They can't deny it after the fact. Either they need to post it as a stipulation to their price adjustment policy that pre-announced price drops are not honored on purchases made from the announcement date to the day before the drop, or the item itself has to be made clearly an exemption to the policy at the time of purchase. Neither has happened so they have no legal standing to not honor it, and if they attempt to not honor it they are going to get themselves in more trouble then it's worth.

I know I'd be happy to fight them. I've got nothing better to do right now.
First of all. You basically lost me on your first sentence. I could care less if you think im a douche, or if your tax reform beliefs differ from mine. (which who knows because I didnt actually state mine)

This is a videogame forum, and as far as I knew this was a thread about the 3ds. Not politics or whether or not its fair... which was also my point..

I guess I need to hit my sarcasm button harder next time or use the cliche

oh and a special thanks to "xenogears" for the considerate pm. havent been on the site in awhile but its nice to know we have people willing to personally attack and flame at moments notice.
Awww, did your feelings get hurt?
When anyone speaks of entitlement here, I'm pretty sure it's misplaced. There is no "free software" being given out by Nintendo, and I'm not going to feel pity for a company that just got a sell from me, when I otherwise had little interest in their product at this point, as well have many others in this thread.

So rather than consider this a freebie on their end, isn't it in reality new revenue that maybe wouldn't have occurred otherwise? Surely we're all not going to JUST purchase the hardware, at least through the system's life cycle anyway.

Good play Nintendo..!
How is getting 20 free games a new revenue stream? Holy shit, people on here are stupid.

So I haven't had a chance to mess with a 3DS, yet, and don't own a DS currently. Are DS games just as good on the 3DS? 'cuz I'm thinking of just skipping a handheld generation.

Well, you can play the DS games just fine on a 3DS. I haven't purchased mine yet (I think I'm going out to BB on the 5th), but I know that the screen is a slightly different proportion, so some people think the games look a little funny. Only I also know that a (rather odd) button combination pressed when you boot up a DS game on a 3DS will put it back into regular proportion, only I believe it's a tiny bit smaller at that point than playing on a DS. But after all, if a small screen size was going to bother you to begin with I don't think you'd want a handheld at all.

***EDIT***
The only thing you'd be missing is any GBA Slot functionality, such as the Pokemon games (pre B/W) and the rumble pack or guitar hero adaptor. But if you were considering a DSi instead of a DS Lite before you would've lost that anyway.
So I haven't had a chance to mess with a 3DS, yet, and don't own a DS currently. Are DS games just as good on the 3DS? 'cuz I'm thinking of just skipping a handheld generation.
Since the resolution of the DS and 3DS top screen are different the DS games look a little washed out color wise. It's honestly not a big deal. I kept my DSi XL because I like the larger screen when playing DS games, but if/when I need to travel I'll just take the 3DS to play DS games. Considering you get a new system that can play DS, 3DS, DSi Ware and the 3DS Virtual Console I'd say you're better off going with the 3DS at this time.

I really hope certain games receive a price drop as well. I'm looking to pick up a few older titles. I've heard great things about Ghost Recon Shadow Wars and Samurai Warriors Chronicles.

How can people say their are no games??

In a few months you will have nintendo best of back catalog in your pocket. The eShop has really saved it for me. AlphaBounce, Cave Story and Picdun are outstanding titles. Can't say I play many iOS games since it opened. Their is a pretty large catalog of worthwhile games in there.

This site helped me find the best titles:
http://dsiware.nintendolife.com/
Unfortunately, The gaming press has largely ignored what has been coming out. My suggestion is to save the $40 (sans maybe Super Street fighter, pilot wings) on a new 3DS title- spend less, and pickup 5-8 DSi titles. $10 for Donkey and Zelda: Link's Awakening is a outstanding deal. Great games I missed.

Yeah, drops would be nice. There aren't too many deals in the next week or so, beyond Kmart's potential "Spend $40, get a $15 gaming coupon" deal.

The demo unit at Best Buy when I bought mine had DoA in it and I want that, but not at $35 used at GS or $40 anywhere else. Ghost Recon intrigues me and I love Dynasty/Samurai Warrior games, so Chronicles is a no-brainer. I have been looking into Blazblue, but the negative reviews on Amazon say some things that turn me off a bit.

Really glad I got SSFIV for $25 though.

Let's see the only GBA games I don't own/have any interest in downloading if I ever get a DSi/3DS:

Ninja Five-O
Sigma Star Saga
Super Mario Advance #: Super Mario Bros. 3 (with the E-reader bonuses)
Sonic Advance 1-3/Sonic Pinball/Sonic Battle
Zelda Minish Cap
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Pokemon Emerald/Sapphire/Ruby
Mario and Luigi Superstar (think that title is wrong)
As well as any imports like Mother series
They charge $10 for Link's Awakening???!!??

Wow, what a steal! lol
I think you misread his post he paid $10 for 2 GameBoy games or $5 each.

Super Mario Land for $5 is awesome too. I'd love for them to put Metroid 2 out soonish.

Just to let the idiots know, the 20 free digital downloads don't cost Nintendo anything.

It's the reason why Nintendo is doing that instead of giving us a voucher for two 3DS titles that equate to $80.
Awww, did your feelings get hurt?

Because I, and many others like me, wouldn't have been inclined to buy the system sans price drop and 20 free games. At least not now, maybe ever.

I didn't think my post was exactly foggy on the logic.

And guess what. I am seriously a moderate! I am NOT a republican. What that means, is you are ed. And its your fault for your evil world views and bullshit that you spread and try to force on good people.
Gamestop told all its stores that they would not be giving price matches with the price drop.

I recommend Target or BB as they seem to be the most likely (and most confirmed) to be giving a guarantee.

Got mine from Target, spoke to customer service, and they assured me ANY item that has a price drop within 14 days of purchase is valid for the difference in money back.

It's an either or internets. If one system has games then the competing system has to be a complete rip off, a toy and is going to flop.

He's a businessman. The fact that Nintendo has been disconnected from true gamers for years comes as no surprise with those comments. The fact 3DS isn't selling to expectations reiterates that. I don't measure success in units sold, only in quality sold.

Actually, just to clear this up, the GBC games(Link's Awakening) are $6, the top tier GB games(SML) are $4 and the lower tier GB games(GB Tennis) are $3. 3D Classics are also $6, by comparison.

@lordopus- Trolling & Harassment
"Posting unsubstantiated negative commentary intended solely to annoy and/or offend other users is not allowed. You may not "stalk" or otherwise harass or harm another user in any way." Rules of CAG, and just decency. People will continue to voice their opinions off the topic and that is fine, to each his own. I think most people have zero issue if the thread exists and is on topic of deals, gaming, and lacks dickish comments. As you see, posts may/should continue as long it does not violate CAG's rules, but again that is outside of your or my control. If you read the last few pages it is non-deal related, just hateful comments towards each other. So to not "bump the thread" and keep it from the top that means the conversations need to discontinue and zero new posts, or it gets closed by a mod. Have the forethought to think ahead or read prior pages before posting as the concern is the negative commentary in the thread. Thanks for bumping. "just saying"

I'm more a fan of 2D Zeldas and my friend still claims it his favorite of the whole series.
On the 3rd Dungeon now and it is excellent timeless design, with more challenging combat then you would expect. Plus it's a new exp for me. It's really nice to be able to save anywhere too. Makes it a great deep handheld title. My only compliant is having to go to the menu too much to change items.

For me $40 for Ocarina is too much. I really had no desire to go back and play it again. To get a just as long and better (imo) Zelda title with bunch of other dsi titles for less. Too me seemed a steal! :D

Okay I haven't partaken in this thread since the beginning but I am wondering....can you still do a PM? I heard from somewhere that they now say that you can't do something unless its like an $X0 price difference.....anyone care to give feedback since at the beginning I was going to do that like everyone at the beginning was....I just don't want BB to be a piece of trash and not follow through in the end.

Nintendo: "You want this, don't you? The hate is swelling in you now. Take your App Store. Use it. I am unarmed. Strike me down with it. Give in to your anger. With each passing moment you make yourself more my servant."

You: "No."

Nintendo: "It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. You, like after your prior DS purchase, are now mine."

Ha. I don't want to derail either but I have been having a blast playing Pilotwings. Working on getting my last few 3 Stars on Gold and hope to unlock Platinum. I haven't even tried Zelda yet.

Taking 3D pictures is pretty cool too.

karmapolice, i'll just say this then let the tax debate you brought up and continue to bring up die.

1. I brought up the former president of nintendo being the richest man in japan and some of his anti-gamer views and beliefs because people were talking about how noble it was for iwata to give up 350,000 dollars, which is seriously nothing to him. It was a calculated decision at a stock holder meeting to keep the stock holders on board and to keep his job, nothing more.
2. If you want to have our private conversations in here, and continue to talk about the tax debate in a thread that has nothing to do with it, post the whole thing. Not just "snipets".
3. Don't send me messages talking down to me about you being an active and useful member of the CAG community while claiming I am not. From the looks of your post history, you have like 10 posts in the last 2 years?
4. I noticed this post by you. Is it safe to assume your friend was a liberal?:
I had one cheat on before, and its something you usually dont get over. In this case it was one of my "friends" so it was kinda worse than a normal situation.
I have had a similar situation recently. It was a guy that just happened to be extremely liberal, with a bunch of liberal friends that supported what he did. That, and just years of "fuck bush this", "fuck republicans that", has probably affected my view of extreme liberals. To this day i still have yet to see a liberal apologize for branding republicans and even moderates as evil greedy tyrants, or have that shithead apologize to me, so your certainly not getting one. But my comments are not directed at you as much as they are directed at you bringing the tax debate that was decided 3 days ago into a video game thread and asserting your stance on it by saying that the top 2% of Americans arn't paying their fair share. And don't act like you didn't bring it up or weren't involved in the conversation.

So if i said something you want to put straight, go ahead and post on here about it. Otherwise, keep our extremely off topic and private conversations where they belong, between those having them.
I can't believe people would scoff at a company whose CEO and other execs punish themselves with a 50% (or 30%) drop in pay, while apologizing to fans they may have hurt by giving them 20 free games, only 10 of which are known at the moment and most if not all of those would garner millions of purchases each over the long term if they weren't being given away for free. This, when anyone with even an iota of intelligence knows that as an early adopter, there is always the risk of being burned. But instead of being completely "burned" you are getting $120 worth of free software! If you couldn't afford the 3DS at $250 or if you didn't think it was worth $250, why the hell did you buy it? You have no one to blame but yourself. Take responsibility for your own actions. Lack of responsibility and an entitlement attitude is what has flushed our country down the drain in recent years.

I pre-ordered a black and aqua 3DS from Amazon. I was so excited. But a few days before launch I was having second thoughts as to the value of the device as well as the quality of the early software (with Nintendo holding back their titles to offer 3rd parties a "fair" chance). So I cancelled the aqua 3DS. Then I thought about it some more and the morning of the delivery I put a note on the door refusing delivery. Then OoT came out. I went to the trouble of locating a copy of the game and a black 3DS in a Target (only one in my area had them). But I thought about it as I looked around for about an hour and decided the price was still too high for the 3DS and that $40 for a game I already owned in 4 different forms was also too high.

Since launch, I knew that unless the thing was going to be sold out constantly, it would drop to $200-230 by Christmas in order to compete with Vita. I was willing to wait even beyond Christmas if it didn't hit below $200. Well I never imagined it would drop to $170 with 20 free high quality games (of which, at least the GBA games I would have been willing to buy anyway) by mid August, but when the news hit I ran out and bought one last Thursday. Why? The price was right FOR ME. I didn't even buy any games because there is nothing of value for me yet. Whatever happens down the road I can deal with though. Because I chose what the 3DS was worth to me and went with it.

tl;dr
People need to stop whining that Iwata and Yamauchi are still earning too much money.
People need to stop whining because they have bad judgement and/or no self control.
People need to start accepting personal accountability (especially when they are so critical of that of others, i.e. Iwata).
People need to stop expecting a handout.
People need to stop being so ungrateful when they do get a handout.

Stop being an uneducated and selfish douche. The top 1% of income earners pay more than the bottom 95% do combined. So, how much are they supposed to be raped for? If we increase their taxes, they can only pay more than the bottom 96, 97, 98, or 99% of other people. There's not a lot more that we can do to them. The top 5% of earners pay for more than 50% of all taxes. And the bottom 49% pay virtually no taxes at all. Check this out (It gets really interesting at about 2:18):

I know this does nothing for you. You are one of the useful idiots. But I simply cannot let stupid and selfish rhetoric like yours go unchallenged.

You want everyone to pay their "fair" share? Stop out of control spending and do away with the current tax code altogether. The first $45k of everyone's income is theirs to keep. After that, everyone pays a flat rate of somewhere between 12% and 18% (depending on what the sane level of spending is determined to be) and things will start improving for everyone - even people with an entitlement mentality.
I work and also was going to school for the past few years. I had a lot more going on to be able to actively post on this forum. You said I havent made more than 10 posts in the past 2 years? I still have an over a post per day average.. so Id say that and being a member for over 7 years is pretty good.

Ive in no way continued to argue with you about politics and this needs to stop.

Im really excited to get my $80 refund, and these first round of games. Mario Kart SC has always been my favorite mario kart games after the original.

Hey guys, what 3ds games do you recomend besides zelda ? I wanna get something else to pair with it When i get my 3ds next week. That and a bunch of ds rpgs that im also going to get that ive missed out on since my ds lite broke a while back should keep me busy. Oh and people, lets stop with the politics, this is a game site not Fox news :)
Actually, just to clear this up, the GBC games(Link's Awakening) are $6, the top tier GB games(SML) are $4 and the lower tier GB games(GB Tennis) are $3. 3D Classics are also $6, by comparison.
Thanks for clarifying for other. I didn't think $5 sounded right, but I didn't want to get on my 3DS to double check.

I bought Rider Racer, Pilotwings, Samurai Warriors and Street Fighter IV on launch and thought they were all fun for various reasons and all showed off the 3D pretty well, Samurai Warriors was probably the weakest though, but it's still mindless fun.
But.. but.. instead of getting something equal to $80, people can play Super Mario Bros and Balloon Fight again!
Or they could have done absolutely nothing.
Or they could have done absolutely nothing.
Hey, we're talking about Nintendo here, not Sony.

Internet downtime for ~30 days is not the same as paying $80 more for a product.

And the personal information issue was overblown and has no value. This is coming from somebody who hates Sony with a passion.

It's worse. You chose to pay $250 for the product.

It will be very interesting to see how 3DS system/game sales go his holiday season. On a bright note for Nintendo, Sony won't be releasing the Vita in North America or Europe until 2012, missing the holiday season, and that should be a good thing for Nintendo (though the Vita will release in Japan by the end of 2011). If this system is going to catch on, I think the 2011 holiday season will be the deciding factor.

The Vita delay, huge price drop and popular series releases (especially Mario Kart and a Mario platformer) blow the door wide open for the 3DS this holiday, IMO...
