THE GIST:
87 TRU's are closing
Current sale at (will drop to bigger discounts):

10-30% off all consoles
20-50% off all games
20-50% off all guides
40-50% off all accessories

*All discount amounts YMMV. Check the list below for a possible update on where each store is at.
*All items bought cannot be returned or exchanged anywhere (the barcodes will be crossed out with a marker).
*Further discounts should happen every 1, 2 weeks. It seemed at first it would be a YMMV on when, but it seems all stores are dropping prices at the same time.
*Stores will probably close sometime around Feb. 27th, give or take a couple weeks. Really just depends on how much merch is still moving when that time comes.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the store/sale list!

1/7 3AM EDIT: I am going to my TRU tomorrow to shop, as I bet many of the rest of you will too. Post what deals and stores you find and hopefully we can compile something worthwhile here. ^_^

1/7 1PM EDIT: Trying to compile what stores we have confirmed are closing; also adding what seems to be the current sale. Since each store is bought by local liqudators, your discounts may be different and drop slower/faster, so YMMV on the discounts, for better or for worse.

1/8 11PM EDIT: Looks like we are looking at about two weeks for the next drop, which should be to 20% - 40%. The time of the drop and the amount is up to each liqudator, so YMMV when it comes to it. But two weeks should be about right for all the stores. Store list updated, along with return policy. Forgot to ask about exchanges though, doh. >_<

1/11 2:30PM EDIT: Changed closed store total from 72 to 87, 12 of which are being turned into Babys R Us. Closing store list also updated.

1/13 3:30AM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added a note below about "fixture" sale information (which probably varies per store on how they go about selling the stuff off).

1/13 11:45PM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added news on possible console discounts.

1/16 3PM EDIT: Looks like Reality's Fringe was right on a nation-wide clearance increase, so thanks to him for the head's up!

1/16 11PM EDIT: Complete closing store list added!

2/9 7:30PM EDIT: Updated %s

I walked into work today for my paycheck and to price adjust some games, and one of the managers took me aside, gave me some paperwork and told me our TRU (Bellingham, WA) along with 72 others are being closed, effective tomorrow. Well, at least my store tomorrow, but I assume everyone else is in the same boat. The earliest they will actually close their doors is Feburary 27th, so there will be plenty of time to take advantage of the sale.

According to the manager, everything will be clearanced for the closing sale starting tomorrow, and only a few things will not be part of that, being video game hardware. I asked about games and she said she didn't know. I don't know exactly what the clearance is going to start at, but I would say 30% (what the GT sale usually starts at) would be a good guess.

If you bought anything from a closing TRU before today and you want to return, exchange, price adjust, whatever, you can still do so. But: everything bought from here on out CANNOT be returned. If they are like my store, they take a big black marker and cross out the UPC. They do this so you cannot return it to another TRU. I didn't get the whole speech, so exchanges may be okay, but no more returns, no more price adjustments.

Also: all TRU coupons, sales, price drops, whatever are no longer valid at the closing stores, since they are not really TRUs anymore.

If not already, you should be seeing soon some sort of poster, fill-out form, whatever in your TRU about selling the fixtures, etc. This includes video game display posters, standees, the playable game set-ups, etc. At my store, it was a cardboard kisok thing with a form you filled out with your contact info and what you want, and they'll contact you with a price. Don't know what things will go for, but you may or may not be able to score some cool stuff.

As much as I love TRU, in the short term if one of them around me closed I could save some money on some new games.

Sonuva, that's a part of my childhood. Ah well, I'll be up there on sunday anyway, Probably get some stuff that hasn't already been cleaned out.

I hope they don't close the one in woburn, ma. That's the one I've gone to since I was a little kid. I used to go to child world in medford, ma more but when that closed I always went to that toys r us.

I take it we don't have the list of which stores are closing?
Oops.. you did mention that. Well, I'm sure we'll have it soon enough.

Ya, I am off tomorrow, but I plan on stopping in to give it a look. I work 11:30 to close on Sunday I'll be there, probably looking bored, heh.

Oh hey man, I checked the Burlington and B-Ham Gamestops and they were all out of the DoS and Makai guides - were you able to get any?

YAY! Woburn is staying open. Medford (took over the old child world building a few years after child world closed) is closing though. Not as many memories, but enough, especially since I grew up in medford.

It says more stores are being changed over to baby's r us. In massachusetts (or whatever area the boston herald concerns itself with) only 3 are closing, but 12 are being converted to babys r us.

"The company last month reported a wider than expected third-quarter net loss of $126 million."

Several Key Clearance sales did nothing to improve the bottom line.

Vader San at a Japanese TRU approves of the measure.

Note to self. I need to return some games I bought there. Not in Japan.

Did the stores that are going to close have some post-it like forms stuck onto the shelves? Does that have anything to do with..., well, anything? Because I notice couple Toys "R" Us that I went to these couple days have them... :whistle2:| Dang, I do not want to drive 30 minutes for a Toys "R" Us... :whistle2:( :nottalking: :headache:
Damn, the one in Holyoke, MA is being converted. Thats the only one around me I actually go to.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

:(

*Starts crying...*

The one in Springfield MA I have so many memories with from when I was small, but they have sucked for at least 5 years.

Then the last 2 years I have been going to the Holyoke one a lot. Sometimes to piss off my now ex boyfriend. Would always check to see if they had new Legos (I'm a Lego Freak) and make fun of the shity game area. But I did get Geist and FF:CC for REALLY cheap.

So where the fuck is the next closest TRU besides the shity Springfield one.

OP, sorry about your job. That sucks. :(

Can't find a list yet online. Google only shows the Boston Herald story, and that's just 1 hour ago. I'm sure we'll get more info over the next day or so as to which other stores are shutting their doors.
OP, sorry about your job. That sucks. :(
Oh yeah, I second that. Sorry to be so rude in my first post.

I'll probably be in on sunday, if you see a guy with a Decepticon shirt, that's me.

I'll check the stores around here once more, but then again, I found out that there is also a Gamestop hidden off in Sunset in bellingham that I'm going to check.

In any case, I'm sure that if you're able to get the rest of the stores that are closing for the others, it would be much appreciated.
...do you know how many total stores are in the chain?
Approximately 680 in the U.S. (1,500 worldwide)

BTW, What's up with the "www1" address? I've never seen a secret location like this before in my life, but without the 1, it sends you to the Amazon jungle...

Not sure, but that could be an inventory going on.

Oh what? That sucks, I remember I use to buy all my games from TRU until all these gamestores started to come up. I'll need to see if any TRU are closing in the SD area. Reminds me that I need to return some games from that green tag sale.
Not sure, but that could be an inventory going on.
That could be it. It better be. Now I am wondering which ones around here will be closing... I did remember the cashier at the GameZone of the Toys "R" Us I went to tonight saying something about "closing"... :whistle2:? Wonder if I heard it correctly... 8-[

Ya, that one doesn't have them either, called tonight after the Burlington bust. =\

Hopefully I'll be on the floor, so if you see me, flag me down and I'll fill you in on whatever game sales info I have. ^_^

Thanks for the sympathies on the job. I don't mind it so much, since I'll be graduated from college and outta the town a month or two after we close, but it sucks hard for the people I work with who this is their only job. No one can really transfer since the next TRU is well over an hour away.

And whoever mentioned Northgate, I was wondering the same thing. Lynnwood and Everett seem all but safe, but Northgate never seemed to be a hotbed of business, not unlike my store. Shit, we made $2,000 on Wednesday for the entire day, so no surprise it's getting the flush, hehe. =P

Crap, I hope my local TRUs don't close yet. I've still got giftcards to spend. >_< And if they don't restock from the Xmas rush, gah, then I'll have nothing to buy.

Serious? My Panda Express inside a grocery store averages more than $2,000/a day.

The TRU that is next door that I used to work at on slow days makes something like $15K/a day.

To be honest the only 2 I know of around here are the springfield and Holyoke ones. I agree the springfield one does suck, and the main reason I go to the Holyoke one is because it is like 5 mins away from school (HCC).

Oh... thank god I'll be back in college Sunday and won't be able to go to any TRUs. I've spent so much money this year, it's not even funny. And the deals weren't that good!:whistle2:(

Inventory is going on at TRU's during this time, that's what the post-it notes are for.

I was wondering when they group who bought the chain would do the first round of closings. Toys R Us has been run into the ground for years. First the we can't figure out a remodel that works, then kids r us mess, and finally hiring the CEO from FAO Schawtz before they went Chapter 11. The store I worked at went through at least a dozen remodles in the last 15 years.

The biggest mistake the have made is not to keep with the times. Kids want Cell phones, Dvd's, digitial cameras, ipods, and electronics. There electronics section is squeezed into RZone which they never have figured out how to handle.

Wal Mart didn't screw TRU, they did it to themselves. Walmart might have driven prices lower and had a better position to deal with Vendors, but TRU has been screwed since the early 90's.

Whew, that is great to hear. But that still does not mean they are not closing. Guess I might go there tomorrow to see. They should have signs indicate that they are closing starting from tomorrow right?

Ya man, it was bad. The managers' played the "guess how much money we made today?" game over the walkie and I had a hard time not laughing at how pathetic that was. Guess I shouldn't have laughed, heh. =P

Last I saw, the EB Games in Burlington had some Makai Kingdom guides. I'd call and ask to double check though.

I'm gonna be heading to the B-ham TRU tomorrow.

Ya, but are they on sale for $9.99 like at Gamestop? ^_~ That's why I am looking for them.

wannabepunktony-
sorry to hear you'll be outta a job. i live in b'ham, wa, and i was one of those first dudes who came in the other morning for the $9.99 game sale. thanks for the heads up on more cheapy gaming goodness. if you see a tall, scruffy dude lurking in the game section in the next couple of days, thats prolly me. if you see a tall, scruffy dude sniffing barbie's hair in the girlie aisle... thats not me.

Fellow Washingtonians!

Yea the Everett and Lynnwood stores seem to do pretty well, I hope they aren't closing, but I would like to get in on any closing deals... Northgate isn't to far out of the way though.

Fine point. During the TRU sale during the holiday season there were a few people who came into the R Zone while I waited on line who wanted to know if Toys R Us stocked iPods. If they did they would have cleared a good at least $1,000 worth of hardware and accessories in less than ten minutes. I'm sure my Toys R Us isn't hurting like some others, but that could have made a difference.

Also, since there's a Best Buy "nearby" (personally I don't define "nearby" as driving for six minutes across nothing but long parking lots filled with insane drivers and holiday idiots) a lot of people went into R Zone, saw the line, and said that they would be better off at Best Buy. Sadly, all of the games they wanted were not currently on sale (although the clearance knocked the prices of a few of their items down to nothing) and since the Toys R Us has been a staple in the neighborhood for decades whereas the Best Buy is still fairly recent (around two years) and has been plagued by a handful of stingy managers and price matching problems...ugh. Also didn't help that the father seemed to want to go there instead so he could also pick up some low-tech cheap gizmos while there as well. Another hit.

I remember when Toys R Us had plenty of toys that you couldn't find anywhere else for good prices, a bike area that was quite impressive for a toy store, and plenty of stock of items that you couldn't really find elsewhere. Nothing made me happier than the Lego aisle, with its countless overpriced Legos that covered almost every single current series and the sets therein. Nowadays, walking through Toys R Us pretty much elicits the same reaction I have when I walk through K-Mart. The store doesn't have the cohesive layout it used to, areas are completely unused and look like they could be used for something more than empty space, the bathrooms used to be open and accessible but are nearly closed off from the public by placing large display cases in front of the bathrooms, the sections zig-zag rather than just work with simple lines...none if it really makes sense. The layout is poor, the place is usually filthy or seemingly disorganized...at least the staff is wonderful, but it looks like they're fighting a losing battle they just can't do anything about.

Thanks for the sympathies. If you see a guy with a nametag that says "Tony," well, I am sure you can guess the rest. ^___^

I added four new stores to the list, three in NY, one in SC.

Are any in Alabama closing? I googled a search, and didn't come up with a list of the stores. I'm willing to bet mine (Montgomery) is one of them

The Raleigh, NC TRU is closing. One of the guys I knew when I was there, who's now a manager, informed me when I stopped by to make sure my W2 gets mailed to the correct address.
